Current differential & Directional Comparison relays are little affected by series compensation

Potential a problem for Current Differential relay for long UHV lines where charging current is too high

Directional Comparison might be a better choice in such case

Cross Differential protection relay for double circuit lines is not effected by series compensation and does not require communication link

Performance of Cross differential relayTests conducted at China EPRI show

» The relay is able to offer fast response for all fault types within the instant protected zone, which is about 90% of the total line length.

» The relay is able to successively trip for all types of remote in zone fault outside the instant protected zone after remote CB operates.

» The relay is able to clear high resistance fault for EHV long lines both instantly and successively.

» The relay is able to trip the faulted phase only for evolving faults on both of the two lines.
