is a New York City based producer of everyday objects that are both functional and unusual. Our goals are to create thoughtful products that inspire an emotional response and to encourage a dialogue between people and their surroundings. We wish to explore design languages as a means of creating new syncretic forms. We like to think we have a good sense of humor and that our objects are poetic. We aim to create a forum for young and local talent, and together, we hope to become a strong voice for American design. We believe that appreciation for beauty is central to what it means to be alive and want to embody this principle in even the simplest things.

The Reality Series consists of forms that are cast from real objects. The designer’s process has always emphasized the inherent beauty of things – beauty from concept, beauty from materials, and beauty from structure. Using a technique that involves casting resin in highly detailed silicone molds, he is able to borrow from the world around him with precision. The pieces are challenging yet familiar, serious yet amusing. Reality is the perfect outlet for Mr. Allen’s complex sensibility which is at once literal, iconic, and functional.

Areaware’s Bow Bins are made by the Aeta people, indigenous inhabitants of the Philippines who retain their ancient traditions, customs and language. It is believed that they arrived from Africa thousands of years ago. For the last several hundred years, they have faced racial discrimination and been driven off their ancestral lands, retreating to remote forested highlands. Here they live in small villages, where they engage in subsistence farming, hunting and gathering, and basket weaving. Basket making with sustainably harvested rattan has been an important part of their cultural and economic life. This, coupled with the work of NGOs such as Preda, have enabled the Aeta people to reclaim some of their ancestral lands. In 2010, seventeen square kilometers were returned to them by the Philippine government.

Hand-crafted in an Indonesian farming village, the Magno AM/FM radio has an appealing mix of retro and modern styling. Made from new growth wood, for every tree that is used in production, a new one is planted. Its uncoated surface should be oiled periodically to encourage a deeper connection between user and object. Robot toys are usually made of plastic and require batteries — but not this one! Inspired by the Japanese Shinto Kumi-ki puzzles, the Cubebot is a non-traditional take on the toy robot by joining ancient Japanese traditions with contemporary toy culture.

Cubebots’s powerful hardwood frame can hold many poses, and his elastic-band muscles and durable wood limbs make him impervious to breakage. When it’s time for him to rest, he folds into a perfect cube. An enduring classic that will withstand generations of play.

Solid, simple, and ceremonial, with an integrated tray to catch wax drippings and a safe resting place for a used match while it is still hot. It is made of solid cast iron and has the heft expected of such a material. The weight gives it a sense of solidity. There is an honesty in the singularity of the iron material which suggests this object could age and continue to look even more beautiful as it acquires a patina from continual use.
