Catholics and the Election Anyone tired of politics? Before every election (especially presidential elections), there is a lot of talk about how Catholics ought to vote. There are many voices chiming in on this question (often favoring one political party or another), so I thought it would be helpful to give some general principles when it comes to voting: 1) First of all, it’s important to vote and to participate in the democratic process. Our country needs our voice and vote, which is formed by our Catholic faith and relationship with God. 2) Neither of the platforms of our two major political parties corresponds perfectly with the teachings of the Catholic Church. In the U.S. Bishops’ document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (FCFC), there are a number of topics that are of special interest and importance to us as Catholics, including: the dignity of human life, promoting peace, marriage and family life, religious freedom, care for the poor and economic justice, health care, immigration, Catholic education, combatting unjust discrimination, and care for the environment. 3) Abortion remains the pre-eminent social justice position of our time. A so-called “pro-choice” stance on abortion, which takes the innocent life of a child and hurts the mother, is indefensible. Similarly, immoral procedures would be euthanasia and infanticide. From the same document: a. The threat of abortion remains our preeminent priority because it directly attacks life itself, because it takes place within the sanctuary of the family, and because of the number of lives destroyed (FCFC, p. 6). b. The direct and intentional destruction of innocent human life from the moment of conception until natural death is always wrong and is not just one issue among many. It must always be opposed. (FCFC, n. 28). 4) It would be immoral for a Catholic to vote for a candidate who supports abortion because they support abortion. If a Catholic were to vote for a candidate who supports abortion, there would need to be a proportionate or “truly grave” reason to do so. Here is what the bishops’ document says about this: There may be times when a Catholic who rejects a candidate’s unacceptable position even on policies promoting an intrinsically evil act may reasonably decide to vote for that candidate for other morally grave reasons. Voting in this way would be permissible only for truly grave moral reasons, not to advance narrow interests or partisan preferences or to ignore a fundamental moral evil. When all candidates hold a position that promotes an intrinsically evil act, the conscientious voter faces a dilemma. The voter may decide to take the extraordinary step of not voting for any candidate or, after careful deliberation, may decide to vote for the candidate deemed less likely to advance such a morally flawed position and more likely to pursue other authentic human goods. In making these decisions, it is essential for Catholics to be guided by a well-formed conscience that recognizes that all issues do not carry the same moral weight and that the moral obligation to oppose policies promoting intrinsically evil acts has a special claim on our consciences and our actions. These decisions should take into account a candidate’s commitments, character, integrity, and ability to influence a given issue. In the end, this is a decision to be made by each Catholic guided by a conscience formed by Catholic moral teaching. (FCFC, n. 35-7). This man is an amazing modern day saint living from 1887-1968. One of his most famous sayings is, “Pray, hope, and don’t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.” Go to www.formed.org and search for “Padre Pio: Between Heaven and Earth”, a movie about “the amazing true story of the life of the famous stigmatic monk.” For our younger people, watch CatChat Episode 2, “Better than a Super Hero, Learning about Jesus.” If you do not have a Formed membership, look at the AFC page of the bulletin for instructions on how to sign up.

If you begin with something good, you end with something good.

Holy Trinity School Making Disciples Since 1883

Holy Trinity Marathon Let’s Build Together! We just kicked off our annual Marathon fundraiser to help support the needs of Holy Trinity School. We invite you to work together with us to raise the funds needed to continue to provide the excellent Catholic education we provide our students. These funds will go toward our athletic program, classroom supplies and COVID-19 mitigation. How can you help? Donate to students who reach out to you. If no one reaches out to you directly, you can stop by school, visit our school website where you can click the Donate button, or you can go to this website to make a direct donation to the Marathon: http://www.99pledges.com/fund/holytrinity . This year’s Marathon is Saturday, October 10 starting at 1:00 p.m. Students and their families will be able to walk or bike 3 or 5 miles. We are also excited to streamline our fundraiser by going online through the 99 pledges fundraising site. Students will be able to reach out to family and friends by email, Facebook, and Twitter. Students will also be doing the traditional knocking on doors. If you would like to donate to the Marathon but don’t know how to go about it, please call the school.

School Pictures This year school pictures will take place on Thursday, October 1. Picture packets will be coming home with students in the next few weeks. Once again, parents will be able to order online.

We usually receive your donations through our weekend Mass collections, but in this extraordinary crisis, our numbers for these celebrations are limited. We ask that you do what you can to continue helping us to meet our obligations to our employees, and to pay our bills. We are trying to provide ministry online, as much as possible, and we will continue to reach out to you in prayer. Please do what you are able to support our parish’s ministry. You may drop your donation at weekend Masses, mail your donations in, drop them by the parish office, or now use Pay Pal to make your donations. If you would like to set up automatic withdrawal please contact Bonnie at Holy Trinity or Shirley at St. Pius X or Holy Family.

A REMINDER that masks are required in the church, per the governor's order. The exception to this are young children or people with medical or mental health conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask.

RCIA: Beginning this Fall, we will start RCIA sessions. If you are interested in attending RCIA sessions, please contact your parish office to sign up. Please see the bulletin directory or bulletin cover for parish office numbers.
