Happy New Year from the Area Development Partnership! I am honored to serve as Chairman of the 2018 ADP Board of Directors.

As the CEO of a multi-state regional business headquartered here in Hattiesburg, I understand the ADP’s mission to ensure that we have continued economic growth and a better quality of life for area citizens. As we all seek to attract and retain talent in the Pine Belt, the ADP plays a critical function in delivering wonderful results for our community. The accomplishments of this organization have been phenomenal, and I have no doubt that we will continue to deliver for our wonderful member organizations.

2017 brought many great accomplishments, and we are all on board to make 2018 a major success. I look forward to serving each and every one of you as we seek to elevate our wonderful community to new heights. Thank you for this honor!

2017 was a banner year for the ADP as we celebrated our 25th Anniversary. After a spectacular, sold-out Gala in December, we now have our sights set firmly on the next 25 years. Thanks to so many who have come before us and those who are currently serving in various capacities, this fine organization continues to thrive and add value within the business community.

Even with all the prosperity, our region has not been without its setbacks as evidenced by the January 21, 2017 tornado that ripped through our community causing significant damage to many homes, businesses, and educational institutions. William Carey University (WCU) bore the brunt of this fierce storm as much of the campus was heavily impacted. Once again, it allowed our region to pick up the pieces and have neighbor aiding neighbor and Carey’s resiliency shined like a beacon in the night as faith centered grit was readily apparent. WCU’s cross town neighbor Southern Miss stepped up to assist during the crisis as President Bennett conferred with President King in offering University resources.

In Greater Hattiesburg, we are proud of our heritage and remain determined and steady even in the face of adversity. The adversity keeps us humble and focused on what is important as we go about our daily lives. Our region is incredibly vibrant and the ADP is honored to play a significant role here in the community as we strive daily to help local companies grow and prosper and recruit new ones to increase our economic vitality. We promise to remain on the forefront of economic development as we continue to outpace the state in job growth and compete effectively with peer cities around the nation. We lean into the competitive landscape and have total confidence that our region will flourish even more in the next 25 years but pause to pay homage to those who have labored in building the strong foundation that we have today.

The ADP is in your corner and we look forward to serving you throughout 2018 as our region continues to be a shining star in Mississippi. Thanks for supporting your regional chamber of commerce and economic development agency!

william careyBuilding for the Future

2017 was one for the William Carey University (WCU)history books. It marked the 125th anniversary of the university’s founding, and January 21st left an indelible mark on its history.

An EF3 tornado struck the campus in the early morning hours damaging 90 percent of the buildings, including six that were complete losses. Thankfully, no lives were lost on campus but others in the community were not as fortunate. Four people died in the storm.

In those first hours following the tornado, the university administration assured students, faculty and staff that Carey would come back stronger than ever. “Carey Strong” became a rallying call for the campus community. “‘Carey Strong’ was not just a slogan we adopted; we lived it and demonstrated it through the dedication of our students, faculty, staff and the community that supported us,” said WCU President Tommy King.

Help came from the Hattiesburg community as wellas from around the country. The University of SouthernMississippi provided classroom and dormitory space for displaced Carey students. Mayor Toby Barker (then a state representative) was one of the first people on site and helped rescue the Lucile Parker art collection. The Asbury Foundation donated $1M to recovery efforts. Donations large and small came from alumni, individuals, businesses, churches, other universities, and complete strangers who wanted to help Carey recover.

Just a month after the storm, students moved back to campus, and most classrooms were operational again. While repairs continued, the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Doctor of Physical Therapy program remained at USM, and Hardy Street Baptist Church provided space for the School of Music. By the beginning of the winter trimester in November, repairs were completed on all the buildings that could be saved.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURETatum Court, the oldest building on campus, was one of the buildings lost during the storm. Tatum Court was built in 1914 and housed administrative and faculty offices, classrooms, and a theatre. The other buildings demolished were Ross and Johnson halls, two girls’ dormitories built in 1919; the Ross Anatomy Lab; a building on Tuscan Avenue that housed the Lucile Parker Gallery and apartments; and an unoccupied building located on university property facing Highway 49.

“Losing so much in the tornado was a tragedy, butthe opportunity to rebuild a better campus is a chal-lenge that comes once in a generation,” said King.

The Ross Anatomy Lab, part of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, was rebuilt and ready for classes by the end of the summer. Four building projects that were underway when the tornado struck are complete. Currently under construction are two dormitories, a new Tatum Court, the Asbury

Academic Building, and an addition to Tatum Theatre. These buildings should be completed by summer or fall of 2018. Additionally, the university built a multi-purpose building on County Drive to house classrooms and offices while construction continues. That building will be converted to a band and dance studio.

CAREY STRONG: GOD IS OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTHEach year Carey chooses an annual theme to focus on and unify the campus. The 2017-2018 theme is “Carey Strong: God is our refuge and strength,” based on Psalm 46. Following the tornado, the Bible in Bass Memorial Chapel remained on the pulpit and was opened to Psalm 46 proclaiming, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

“Carey’s strength is not found in buildings; it is found in the Carey family which is grounded in scripture, rooted in faith, and driven by mission,” said Dr. Scott Hummel, Executive Vice President and Provost. “This year’s theme speaks to more than recovery; it inspires the university to prepare students to face storms and chal- lenges like the wise who build their lives on the rock.”

NEW BEGINNINGSA year later the Carey Strong attitude remains evident as enrollment continues to increase and new degree programs are added.

“Carey’s predecessor, Pearl River Boarding School, which was founded in 1892, was the first institution of higher learning in South Mississippi, and 125 years later, we continue to serve the educational needs of the state and region,” said Dr. King.

Following the tornado, university officials anticipated a decline in enrollment, but just the opposite happened. The admissions office staff and faculty members helped ensure that current students returned and that new students were not deterred by the visible damage to the campus. Enrollment increased in both spring and summer trimesters, and when the new school year began in August, enrollment stood at 4,694, a 4.4 percent increase over the previous fall. The School of Education set a record enrollment for the third consecutive year.

“This is a direct result of the tenacity and faith of our outstanding students,” said Admissions Director

Alissa King. “Our students make us Carey Strong, and we credit each one of them for the university’s success.”

Carey’s health care-related degree programs continue to grow as the university seeks to address not only the state’s educational needs but also the health and wellness of Mississippi’s people.

The College of Osteopathic Medicine, which opened in 2010, has graduated 360 new doctors. Members of the first graduating class are completingtheir residencies and are now practicing physicians.

“As our first class finishes their primary residencies, many are moving to rural and underserved areas in Mississippi and the Gulf South,” said Dr. James Turner, dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

In 2016 the university added a Doctor of Physical Therapy program that has 58 students enrolled. In May 2017, the university broke ground on a new academic building and the School of Pharmacy at the Tradition campus in Biloxi. The pharmacy school will be the second pharmacy school in the state and will be the first professional program on the coast. The school is set to open in summer 2018, pending approval from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education.

As William Carey University enters its 126th year, the university community looks forward to a full recovery from the tornado and will continue to live by its creed: “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.”

Helping Our Students Plan for the Future

jumpstart to successWorkforce development opportunities at the K-12 level are pivotal in helping to

develop a vibrant, work ready community that is prepared to prosper. The Area Development Partnership (ADP) believes this fact whole-heartedly and has worked diligently over the past few years to create development opportunities for K-12 entities through its Post Graduate Success Support Initiatives. As part of these initiatives, JumpStart to Success was created to expose students to career opportunities available in the region. JumpStart to Success (JumpStart) is a hands-on, interactive career exposition exclusive to 9th graders in Forrest, Lamar, and Perry Counties. The program showcases local businesses, universities, and community colleges in a collaborative, exploratory atmosphere for each student, and encourages students to take the first steps in planning for their future.

Over the years, the JumpStart program has grown into a major education event, hosting over 1,000 students and approximately 60 exhibitors. Students have attended from every high

school across the Greater Hattiesburg region, both public and private. The Greater Hattiesburg region is fortunate to have schools focused on student growth and achievement that attend programs such as JumpStart. Suzanne Kelly, CTE Director at Forrest County AHS, who is an avid supporter of the ADP’s education initiatives, says, “JumpStart to Success is a valuable experience for 9th grade students to learn about career options from local business and industry representatives. Many of the exhibits provide students with hands-on activities that provide an opportunity to interact with future employers from our area. Students also benefit by

exploring career pathways as they gain valuable insight into the high school courses that will prepare them to be college and career ready.” Benefits of the program include students having the opportunity to explore career options they did not know were available to them or options different than initially thought about. Students are also able to uncover education requirements and median salary outlooks through signage at each pathway that can help guide career decisions.

JumpStart has reached new heights in regards to size and quality thanks to the incredible business community that calls the region home. Without the exhibitors that bring life to JumpStart, the program would just be another career fair. However, the JumpStart exhibitors step up in a big way to provide

the most hands-on, interactive career exposition possible. Exhibiting businesses are first divided

into groups, or pathways, based on their business type. Once the businesses are assigned to a pathway, they are encouraged to be as creative as possible when planning out their exhibit. This is where knowledge and fun mesh together to create a top-of-the-line education initiative. From bucket trucks in the energy sector, robots in manufacturing, a pre-k class in education, and a film set in media and communications, there is never a shortage of careers for students to discover.

The fourth annual JumpStart to Success will be held on February 8th, 2018 at the Forrest County Multi-Purpose Center. The ADP looks forward to continuing its endeavor in connecting students to workplace realities and offering opportunities to expand student’s horizons through programs such as JumpStart. If you are interested in exhibiting or learning more about JumpStart to Success, please visit our website at www.theADP.com/live/education-initiatives/.

Pine Belt Young Professionals (PBYP) is all about connecting. Its mission is to provide opportunities for young professionals to connect to each other and the community. The 120+ member organization accomplishes this through hosting events that encourage networking, professional development and community service.

As a young professional, it is important to continually grow and develop. One of the best ways to do this is to learn from those who have found success. Inspiring guest speakers are invited to share their experiences with PBYP at professional development lunches and off the clock events.

Throughout 2017, PIne Belt Young Professionals have learned from various speakers on topics such as civic engagement, entrepreneurship, community involvement, service, and more. The group also participated in many community events such as Live at 5, United Way canned food drive, and most recently, Christian Services’ Birthday Party for Jesus.

This year, Pine Belt Young Professionals kicked off their new year with guest speaker, Mayor

Toby Barker, by hosting their November “Blue Plate” lunch at Mugshots Grill & Bar. Mayor Barker spoke to the YP’s about the many city updates happening in Hattiesburg as well as the importance of being plugged into the community as a young professional.

PBYP hosted a Tacky Christmas Sweater Party in December to collect toys for the Birthday Party for Jesus, and was proud to donate two cars filled with toys to local children in need.

PBYP loves giving back to the community, and provides many opportunities to become involved through service projects, volunteering, and participating in local events.
