SINGLE-USESTERILE GARMENTSThese disposable garments are made typically from two types of fabric:

Flash-spun polyethylene fabric, which provides filtration efficiency for submicron-sized particles and micro-organisms, is suitable for light splash protection from non-hazardous liquids. Spunbond Meltblown Spunbond (SMS) fabric which has outer layers of spunbond polypropylene for strength and cloth-like comfort and middle layers composed of a matrix of microfibres. This creates a strong barrier for fine particles and liquids. The three SMS layers have a maze-like quality that traps particles, while maximising airflow to keep the wearer cool and comfortable.

It’s not only important to review what comes off the garment, but what also comes through the garment which can impact the environment. After measuring the Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) of several reusable garments to compare the impact of multiple process exposures, the results were clear. As the number of laundering cycles went up, the BFE kept dropping.

For single use garments, the impact of gamma irradiation on the polymer only occurs one time.
