“There is nothing like a dream to create the future.” - Victor Hugo
This week, we explore the virtue of determination. Determination is focusing our energy
and efforts on a task and then sticking to it until it is finished. It is also using our power to
do something when it isn’t easy. We show determination to achieve our goals, even
when they appear to be challenging. Please consider taking a few minutes to discuss
being determined with your child/ren over the next week.
This week, we welcomed Mrs Wendy Dowling to Parkhurst State School as our Acting
Deputy Principal until the end of this Term. Mrs Dowling comes to us from Dingo State
School, with a wealth of experience working in various sized schools across Queensland.
Please join me in welcoming Mrs Dowling to Parkhurst State School.
Earlier this week, I was notified that Mr Glenn Olive was the recommended and
successful applicant for the permanent position of Principal at The Hall State School. Mr
Olive will commence his new role immediately following the Autumn Vacation. Please
join me in congratulating Glenn on this next exciting chapter of his leadership career.
Sometime in Term Two, a statewide recruitment and selection process will be
conducted to permanently appoint a new Deputy Principal to the school.
Mrs Alexis Robinson officially commenced her work this week as the school’s Head of
Inclusion, filling the positon left vacant by Mrs Alana Fitchen, who is currently one of the
Region’s three Principal Education Officers : Student Services. Mrs Robinson will be in this
role until the end of Semester One, with a high likelihood of extension until the end of
2019. Mr Mark Pearce will undertake Mrs Robinson’s CoTeaching role as part of the
school’s Neighbourhood Centre. Mr Cameron Preston will assume Mr Pearce’s role in
releasing the four Curriculum Leaders each week as well as continue the work being
undertaken to deliver design and digital technologies across the school as part of tour
STEAME Program. Mrs Jovelyn Dig-O will be working with the learners in Year 2/3P until
the end of Term Two, with a possibility of extension.
Next Friday is Ms Dianne Stace’s final day as the Head of Reading for the remainder of
2019. Mrs Lyn O’Farrell will be filling the vacant role of Head of Reading for the
remainder of 2019. Mr Keegan Ridgley has been appoinbted as 2/3O’s Class Teacher
and will commence on Monday April 01st 2019 to promote a smooth transiiton. Please
join me in wishing Ms Stace the very best during her period of absence.
Until next week,

The end of our first fifty days of learning at
the end of Term One is celebrated with
our annual Easter Hat Parade on Friday
April 05th 2019 in the Assembly Area.
Specific information will soon be sent out by
Neighbourhood Teacher Teams regarding the
creation of hats.
The Easter Hat Parade commences at 2:00 p.m. and
concludes by 2:45 p.m. in time for our learners to
catch the Estate Buses. As in all past years, this is an
event for all learners and staff to participate in.
Parents, Carers and friends of the school are always
encouraged to attend this colourful and creative
parade of hats.
Last week, invitations were sent
home to all families to indicate
preferred days and times to
connect face to face with
Classroom Teachers in Weeks Nine and Ten to
discuss the progress and achievement of learners.
This year, as a school we are aiming for a
participation rate of 90% and higher. If you have not
yet received an invitation to meet with your
child/ren’s Class Teachers, please contact them or
the Office as soon as possible. By now, confirmation
slips regarding days and times should have been
received.
Every year, Parkhurst State School
has it’s annual Cross Country and
Fun Run during the last week of
Term One for all learners from Prep
to Year Six. This year, this popular
event will be held on Wednesday
April 03rd 2019, commencing at 9:00 a.m. All classes
will assemble with their teachers after classroom rolls
have been marked in the Assembly Area, before
parading to the Oval in the Sports Houses, led by the
Sports House Captains.
All learners are encouraged to wear their Sports
Shirts on the day. All parents and carers are
encouraged to attend and support their child/ren
and even take part if able and willing. As in previous
years, the course is marked through the school and
is completed as four events in Neighbourhoods.
All families would have received sponsorship
booklets, with some options for the collection of
money, including online. There are also some great
prizes on offer for fundraising milestones. All
Sponsorship Forms and money is due on Monday
April 01st 2019 to the Office, with a final collection
date of Thursday April 04th 2019. Last year, around
$6 000 was raised. A big thank you goes out to Mr
David Johnson who has coordinated this fundraiser,
with proceeds supporting the resourcing of the
school’s Physical Education Program.

Our learners will listen to, read, view and interpret a range of literary and non literary and
everyday texts, including fiction, non fiction and picture books, stories from Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander cultures to explore predictable text structures and common visual
patterns. Learners will respond to imaginative stories making connections between
personal experiences and the texts they are reading.
Learners will engage in opportunities to learn about language, literature and literacy within a range of
contexts including focused teaching and learning, play, real life situations, investigations and routines
and transitions. Learners will retell events of a familiar story using text structure and repetition.
Opportunities to read, view and interpret texts with animal characters will be provided to explore how
they reflect human qualities. Learners will create an animal character to be included in a literary text,
discussing their choices in an interview.
Our learners will read, view, listen to and analyse a range of texts to
comprehend and compare the text structures and language features of
imaginative, informative, literary and persuasive texts. Learners will create an
informative text with a supporting image. Learners will make inferences about
characters and settings and draw connections between the text and their own
experiences.
Learners will demonstrate their understanding of persuasive texts by examining
ways persuasive language features are used to influence an audience. They
will use this knowledge and language to create their own persuasive text.
Learners will present their persuasive text to an audience of their peers.
Our learners will listen to, read, view and interpret a range of news articles and
reports from journals, newspapers, television and the internet to respond to
viewpoints portrayed in media texts. Learners will apply comprehension

visual elements, from a particular viewpoint.
Learners will understand how to recognise and analyse characteristic ideas and persuasive techniques
including language features and devices, audio effects and visual composition in advertisements and
their impact on the target audience. Learners will use appropriate metalanguage to describe the effects
of persuasive techniques used and report these to peers. Learners will use word processing and
multimedia to manipulate text and images to create an effective composition. Learners will write and
present a news report using persuasive language to influence their audience.
Our learners will listen to, read and view a variety of news reports and
advertisements from television, radio, print, digital media and the internet.
Learners will identify and analyse bias in media reports and evaluate the
effectiveness of language devices that represent ideas and events with the
intent to influence an audience.
Learners will create a written response to a news report. Learners will understand how text features and
language combine to persuasive effect and demonstrate their understanding of advertising texts’
persuasive features through the creation of their own digital multimodal advertisement and an
explanation of their own creative choices.
