Are stereotypes harmful? _______________ Tolerance has become the symbol of today The relationships between countries are quickly developing. Our unlikeness makes us constantly think about feelings of other people in order not to hurt them acting in a wrong way or verbally. Let us remember the main notions we should deal communicating: Tolerance Lack of prejudice Rejection of discrimination Respect Politeness Political correctness Political correctness is such language and behavour that can't hurt people. It shows the respect towards them. These words and expressions will help you to understand the text: states [steits] retire [ri'tai] / retirement [ri'taimnt] / remain [ri'mein] victim [viktim] suffer [s/\fr] sufferer [s/\fr] to be accused ['kju:zd] proper [prop] / improper [improp] / Do the scanning of the text Find out the key words Give the title to each paragraph Try to answer the questions: What does the text teach us? Now we can say that the subject of our lesson is Verbal political correctness Basic Politeness Rules 1. A positive atmosphere is created if positive words are used. If you want to be polite, always use the positive word. Instead of good bad use good not good not so good E.g.: It's not so good to be late 2. If you want to complain or disagree, it's better to say I don't think + positive verb rather than I think + negative verb E.g.: I don't think you are right 3. Avoid using strong adverbs: very, extremely. It is more polite to choose milder words: a bit, slightly. E.g.: You are a bit noisy today 4. In order not to sound too harsh, it's better to use tend to when you criticise somebody. E.g.: They tend to be a bit noisy. Act out the dialogues: I. S1: - You are extremely noisy today, Pavel S2: - Am I? S1: - Yes, you are (start fighting). 2. S1: - You are a bit noisy, Pavel. Please, be calm. S2: - Excuse me, please. S1: - Don't mention it. Act out the dialogues: 3. S1: - Sasha, show us the drainage-basin of the Missisippi river, please. S2: - Here it is. S1: - I think you are wrong. S2: - Really? But I don't think so. Act out the dialogues: 4. S1: - Sasha, show me Christchurch on the map, please. S2: - It should be somewhere here... S1: - I don't think you are right. It is in Australia. S2: - Well, I see I'm wrong. Act out the dialogues: Describe the elderly man Use these words: energetic, good-looking, interested in the plot of Conversation, thoughtful, Attentive, ready for action, is giving an advice. We see an elderly man (gentleman) about 70. He is energetic, good-looking, interested in the plot of conversation. His eyes are thoughtful, his face is attentive. He is ready for action. I think he is giving an advice to his son or grandson. Describe the man with disabilities middle-aged, strong enough, energetic, self-confident, good-looking, friendly, difficult to get on, does his best. Use these words: There is a man with disabilities. He is a person who can not walk. He is middle-aged, strong enough. He is energetic and self-confident. His face is good-looking and friendly. The man is crossing the street in his vehicle. It is difficult to get on the pavement but he does his best. Describe the young woman young, beautiful, African American woman, friendly, smiling, wide-opened, sociable, sporty, fashionable. Use these words: This is the young beautiful African American woman. She is friendly, smiling. She has wide- opened brown eyes. She is sociable, sporty, open to the world. She has fashionable hairdress and clothes. Her taste is good. Summing Up: Tolerance and political correctness will help us to avoid conflicts and get on with people well. In future adult life it will do us good communicating with boss and colleges. Avoiding conflicts we avoid stresses. Avoiding stresses we avoid diseases. So communicating with people in a proper way makes us healthy physically and spiritually. We hope that political correctness will come into your every day life and you will do practising it more than reading and speaking about it. Learn to live in our huge world!
