WHAT INCREASES YOUR RISK FOR SHINGLES

You must have had chickenpox to get shingles.

Being older than 50.

Having a weakened immune system due to another disease, such as diabetes or HIV infection.

Experiencing stress or trauma.

Having cancer or receiving treatment for cancer.

Taking medicines that affect your immune system, such as steroids or medicines that are taken after having an organ transplant.

WHEN TO CALL A DOCTOR If you think you have shingles, see a doctor as soon as possible. Early treatment with antiviral medicines may help reduce pain and prevent complications of shingles, such as postherpetic neuralgia (pain that does not go away within 1 month and may last for months or even years after shingles heals.) If you still feel intense pain for more than 1 month after the skin heals, see your doctor. Getting your pain under control right away may prevent nerve damage that may cause pain that lasts for months or years. For additional information: www.webmd.com

SHINGLES — TOPIC OVERVIEW A painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus. Shingles usually appears in a band, a strip, or a small area on one side of the face or body.

Shingles is most common in older adults and people who have weak immune systems because of stress, injury, certain medicines, or other reasons. Most people who get shingles will get better and will not get it again. But it is possible to get shingles more than once.

Shingles occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox starts up again in your body. After you get better from chickenpox, the virus "sleeps" (is dormant) in your nerve roots. In some people, it stays dormant forever. In others, the virus "wakes up" when disease, stress, or aging weakens the immune system. Some medicines may trigger the virus to wake up and cause a shingles rash. But after the virus becomes active again, it can only cause shingles, not chickenpox.

You can't catch shingles from someone else who has shingles. But there is a small chance that a person with a shingles rash can spread the virus to another person who hasn't had chickenpox and who hasn't gotten the chickenpox vaccine. Symptoms happen in stages.

1) At first you may have a headache or be sensitive to light. You may also feel like you have the flu but not have a fever.

2) Later, you may feel itching, tingling, or pain in a certain area. The rash turns into clusters of blisters. The blisters fill with fluid and then crust over. It takes 2 to 4 weeks for the blis-ters to heal, and they may leave scars.

3) You could also feel dizzy or weak. Or you could have long-term pain or a rash on your face, changes in your vision, changes in how well you can think, or a rash that spreads. If you have any of these problems from shingles, call your doctor right away.

TREATMENT OVERVIEW

Shingles is treated with medicines. These medicines include antiviral medicines and medicines for pain.

Starting antiviral medicine right away can help your rash heal faster and be less painful. So if you think you may have shingles, see your doctor right away.

Good home care also can help you feel better faster. Take care of any skin sores, and keep them clean. Take your medicines as directed. If you are bothered by pain, tell your doctor. He or she may write a prescription for pain medicine or suggest an over-the-counter pain medicine.

Anyone who has had chickenpox can get shingles. You have a greater chance of getting shingles if you are older than 50 or if you have a weak immune system.

There is a shingles vaccine for adults. It lowers your chances of getting shingles and pre-vents long-term pain that can occur after shingles. And if you do get shingles, having the vaccine makes it more likely that you will have less pain and your rash will clear up more quickly. (Continued on next page . . . )

Sister Lillie Beatrice Williams

Sister Williams (86 years of age) has been a member of New First

Baptist Church (Taylorsville) for 75 years. Sister Williams is the

sister of Sister Ora Burton; the aunt of Trustee Imn Burton and

spouse, Trusteette Joycetine Burton, Vanessa B. Hinton, Kathy

Burton-Bell, and Cynthia Harrison; and the great aunt of Tammara

Hinton, Torrey Hinton, and Wayne Hinton, Jr.; the sister-in-law

of Deaconess Frances Williams; and the aunt and great aunt of many

more nieces and nephews.

Sister Williams has been very active in her community: Member of Martha Chapter #10

O.E.S. (62 years) Former member of the Cavalier Manor Senior Citizens (20 years) and

Pianist for the group (8 years) Member of the Les Hirondelles Social Club which did

special programs for the William T. Hall Convalescent Home (8 years) Member of the

Community Club for Teenagers (The Young Women’s Club) serving as assistant leader

discussing problems encountered by them Member of the Joseph E. Parker Exercise Class

until about five years ago.

As an active member of the church, ministry involvement includes attending the Sunday

School Adult Ladies Class #1, Sunday School Pianist (over 68 years), Ushers Ministry

(Honorary Status now due to health), Senior Missionary Ministry, Vacation Bible School

Adult Class and Pianist until the year 2000, and one of the sponsors for the Christmas

Program (served as pianist during the earlier years). Sister Williams’ favorite scripture is

Psalm 23 and her favorite Christian song is “If I Can Help Somebody.”

Under the leadership of Rev. William A. Roberts, Sister Williams was a member of the

Roberts Loyal Workers Ministry and the Special Projects Ministries in which she worked

with other persons in cleaning the church and allowing the money to be used toward the

payment of pews. She also assisted others with the sale of dinners from her parents’ home

and the sale of pies, hot dogs, hamburgers, fried crabs, and watermelon from a booth. (The

first church was destroyed by fire and this effort continued until the present building was

constructed). She assisted with the selling of tickets, collection of tickets, and the

monitoring of the buses for the Sunday School Outings to the Beach under the leadership of

Rev. Roberts and later, Rev. Dr. T. Melvin Steele. She participated with the Activity

Ministry; participating on programs at an early age and in most plays presented.

(Continued on next page . . . )

Sister Williams organized the Young People’s Choir to sing on special programs under

Rev. Roberts. In 1945, she went off to college and upon her return in 1949, she resumed

the position as organist and the choir served each Fourth Sunday and continued under

Rev. Steele. The Young People’s Choir also had the opportunity to sing for several half

hour programs on Channel 27 during her tenure as organist. After 20 years of working

with the Young People’s Choir, she resigned to spend time with her terminally ill sister.

Upon the death of her youngest sister, whose husband was in the Army, Sister Williams

took care of and raised her four year old daughter and ten year old son while still

working. The daughter became a Registered Nurse and later graduated from Law

School. The son served in the Army, completed college, and later became a Surgical

Assistant.

As a graduate of Virginia State University in Petersburg, she became a teacher and

retired with a total of 36 years of service. She has been retired for about 26 years and is

still caring for children while their parents work.

What Sister Williams loves about New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville) — The friendly cooperative spirit of adults and youth especially when asked to

participate in various activities

The devoted Sunday School Leaders and Teachers

The inspirational singing of the choirs and the excellent music played by the

musicians

The opportunities for the children to take an active part in the services and other

activities (use their talents and growing)

The inspirational messages delivered from the spiritual leaders in a manner that all

can understand and from them receiving something helpful

Looking at the decorations seems to put a smile on your face and say, “Come on in

for a pleasant stay.”

She also enjoys the very lively, clear, and exciting manner in which the

announcements are delivered and she appreciates the monthly “Health Tips”

which has been found to be very useful to some of us

Lastly, it gives her great joy to see and hear the young adults do the “Altar Call”

with the youth. The topics are well chosen and are discussed in a manner that

seems to demand everyone’s attention because they often apply to everyone.

New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville) family has truly been blessed with the loving

and giving spirit of Sister Lillie B. Williams. Let’s give a loud “Thank You” and “Bless

You” to our Senior in the Spotlight for her 75 years of service to the Lord.
