This is a trip of a lifetime ‐ one to definitely tick off your bucket list! Imagine cruising past icebergs and glaciers and then seeing the magnificent Polar Bear. This two week journey explores one of the most remote areas on earth, travelling on a superb ship built purposely for these waters and offering birdwatching, hiking, photography and exploring by zodiac. Weather‐wise July is the perfect time and as this trip is just 13 nights you can then head off to ex‐plore Europe or travel further‐a‐field.

Your journey starts with 2 nights in the picturesque Norwegian capital of Oslo before flying north to the Arctic town of Longyearbyen. Here you will commence your 9 night voyage exploring the bays and islands of Spitsbergen and the Svalbard archipelago ‐ a tremendous wildlife and birdlife destination. This glacier–studded coast is a celebrated breeding ground for many seabirds, along with marine mammals and the elusive polar bear. The scenery offers towering ice cliffs, glaciers and frozen mountains, all waiting to be explored. Spot beluga whales as well as bearded & ringed seals, and visit the world’s most northerly community at Ny Alesund. At Prins Karls Forland look for walrus hauling out of the water before returning to Longyearbyen for an overnight stay prior to flying back to Oslo where the expedition ends.

The Arc c se lement of Longyearbyen:

The area is known as the Svalbard Archipelago and the two main islands are Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet. Longyearbyen is on Spitsbergen and with a permanent popula on of over 1,000 it is the world’s most northernmost se lement. Depending on flight mes we may take a boat trip or even have a go at dog‐sledding.

Arc c Expedi on on Akademic Sergey Vavilov:

First and foremost we are travelling aboard a stable ice‐strengthened ship affording us the opportunity to explore various Arc c bays in search of Beluga, blue, fin, orca and humpback whales, and Bo le‐nose dolphins. We’ll go hiking on islands to see reindeer and Arc c Fox and cruise among ice floes looking for Polar bears, walrus & seals. There will be plenty of bird‐watching opportuni es on board, plus hikes and zodiac trips to see breeding Guillemots, rock ptarmigan, auks, and if we are lucky puffins. The onboard, professional photog‐rapher will also ensure we capture the best shots, whilst the on‐board staff offer talks on such subjects as ice and glaciers, birds & wildlife, the history of whaling and mining and the cultures and people of the area. Of course there will also be some surprise, fun evenings and the ever‐popular Captain’s Dinner.

Karl Johan Hotel Oslo—Norway

Right in the heart of Oslo on its main street is the Karl Johan Hotel housed in an elegant 19th‐century building at Karl Johans Gate, less than 500 metres from the Royal Palace. Located on a hill the Spitsbergen Hotel has a great view of Longyearbyen and is just 10 minutes walk from the city centre. Your cell phone most definitely will not work here! This well‐known hotel offers 88 extremely comfortable and warm rooms, all with TV, telephone, WiFi and a hairdryer. There is also a range of plac‐es to eat and of course there is a Sauna. 9 NIGHTS/10 DAYS

JULY 14 - JULY 23, 2016

OVERVIEW

Spitsbergen and the Svalbard archipelago offer a tremendous wildlife and birdlife experience, as well as a fascinating lesson in glaciology. First used as a whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries, they are now celebrated as a breeding ground for many seabirds, along with marine mammals and the elusive polar bear. Our expedition ship is the renowned Akademik Sergey Vavilov, perfectly suited for remote exploration. Throughout our journey we enjoy a comprehensive series of presentations which provide an excellent background to our expedition.

Our voyage commences in Longyearbyen, the principal community of this frosty Norwegian territory. On our 9-night voyage we sail out of Isfjorden and turn south, before heading west and around to the northwest coast of Spitsbergen. We will search for beluga whales near Bourbonhamna and photograph industrial exploration history near Recherche Fjord. Sailing north along the west coast of Spitsbergen, we reach Krossfjorden, home to numerous bird colonies as well as bearded and ringed seals. Nearby is the town of Ny Ålesund, the world’s most northerly community. Our voyage continues to Phippsoya, where, at 81° North, we have our best chance to see polar bear. Heading south, we stop at Monaco Glacier and Liefdefjorden – another great spot for bears – and at Prins Karls Forland we hope to see a walrus haul out before arriving back into Longyearbyen.

DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 – Longyearbyen, Svalbard

Today we embark our expedition ship, the Akademik Sergey Vavilov in Longyearbyen and as we throw the lines, we sail out of Adventfjorden and into Isfjorden during the early evening. With almost 24 hours of daylight at this time of the year, we enjoy the views from the outer decks of the ship as we depart. We meet our expedition team during an introductory briefing and then enjoy a welcome dinner in the ship’s comfortable dining room.

Day 2 – Bourbonhamna

Beluga whales are frequently seen as they transit the narrow sound near Bourbonhamna. Adults are pure white and the younger calves a mottled grey colour. It is estimated there are approximately five to ten thousand belugas in the Svalbard population. The beluga has no dorsal fin, a diagnostic feature of whale species that live in the high Arctic such as the narwhal and bowhead. Since a dorsal fin could be damaged when the animal surfaces in areas with ice, it has been postulated the lack of dorsal fin is an adaptation to living in waters that are frequently covered by ice. We search for belugas from the ship and when zodiac cruising. On our shore excursion, an old hunting cabin and other artefacts are points of interest during our scenic hike to Ingebrigstenbukta.However, it is the massive piles of beluga whalebones that catch everybody’s attention. The bones and all artefacts are protected by the Svalbard Government and cannot be removed. While wandering amongst these relics we hope to catch a glimpse of dozens of reindeer that inhabit the area.

Day 3 – Krossfjorden

The shores of Krossfjorden are home to numerous bird colonies and a variety of different species. We anchor off one small harbour and cruise in the zodiacs along the bird cliffs near the 14th of July Glacier. As we cruise the dark waters, we are always on the lookout for bearded and ringed seals, both species known to frequent this fjord.

Day 4 – Liefdefjorden and Monacobreen

No trip along the north coast of Spitsbergen would be complete without a visit to Monacobreen (Monaco Glacier). A wide glacier face at the head of the fjord makes for spectacular kayaking and zodiac cruising. The coastal plain near the mouth of Liefdefjorden offers superb hiking and is often a great place to spot polar bears that come here to hunt for ringed seals or feed on nutrient rich bird's eggs.

Day 5 – Phippsoya – Northernmost Point

At 81° north latitude, Phippsoya is just 540 nautical miles from the North Pole. Our ice strengthened expedition ship allows us to approach the edge of the pack ice in safety and comfort. Because of its proximity to the permanent Arctic ice pack, Phippsoya offers the potential for great polar bear viewing. In recent seasons we have enjoyed excellent encounters with polar bear in this area. Be sure to get up to the ship’s bridge and take a picture of the GPS showing your latitude or, better yet, take your own handheld GPS with you and mark in the waypoint as we are so close to the North Pole!

Days 6 & 7 – Hinlopen Strait Strait and Nordaustlandet

From the ice edge we turn south into the main strait separating Svalbard’s two main islands: Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet. In Hinlopen Strait the bird cliffs at Alkefjellet are home to more than a hundred thousand breeding Brunnich’s guillemots, as well as thousands of kittiwakes and black guillemots. It is a spectacular site and a challenging one for our zodiacs as the tidal currents roar through Hinlopen Strait. Nearby Murchison Fjord is a wonderful place to kayak or cruise as we navigate the waterways between the islands. There are some excellent hiking routes here which take us up to high points affording staggering views and further opportunities to encounter Arctic wildlife.

Day 8 – Fuglesangen and Smeerenburg

As your zodiac approaches the shore of Fuglesangenoya, it becomes apparent there are thousands of birds nesting on this island. Home to a large dovekie colony, the formation of the island allows for excellent viewing without impacting upon the perimeter of the colony. Just a few miles from Fuglesangen is the old whaling station of Smeerenburg, literally translated as Blubber Town. As we hike the shoreline of this former whaling station, we learn about the importance of whaling in the discovery and exploration of the Svalbard archipelago. The blubber ovens stand as a reminder to this harsh industry in an equally harsh environment.

Day 9 – Poole Pynten, Prins Karls Forland

The sight and sound of a walrus haul out spells Arctic like nothing else can. We visit this well-known walrus colony on Prince Charles Island and hope to see these odd looking animals ashore. Approaching from downwind can often confirm that walrus are ashore, as the smell of a walrus haul out is quite 'unique'! Tonight we celebrate our journey with a special dinner attended by the ship’s Captain. It's a great time to reflect on a wonderful voyage in this wild and remote place.

Day 10 – Longyearbyen

Arriving back into Longyearbyen this morning, we disembark after breakfast and say farewell to our expedition team and fellow passengers. A transfer into town is provided for those choosing to stay a few days. If you are departing today, we have a few hours this morning to explore the town, before transferring to the airport for your onward flight to Tromso or Oslo.

Terms and Conditions

HOW TO BOOK YOUR TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

To accept the offer of TCSC set out in the Invoice, the clients must pay

to TCSC the deposit set out in the Invoice. TCSC is under no

obligation to the clients to book the travel arrangements unless and

until the booking form and the deposit are provided to TCSC.

PAYMENT OF THE DEPOSIT

The payment of the deposit OR any other partial payment for a

booking constitutes consent to all provisions of the Terms, Conditions

and general information contained in the Company's brochures,

invoice and travel documents. The terms under which you agree to

take these safaris cannot be changed or amended except in writing

signed by an authorised officer of the Company. The deposit paid is

not refundable for any reason whatsoever.

YOUR TRAVEL PACK – CHECK ON TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS.

Upon the clients providing to TCSC the booking form and deposit,

TCSC will provide to the clients a travel pack. The clients

acknowledge that the clients will make certain that all aspects of the

clients’ travel arrangements are as required within that travel pack.

The clients undertake to advise TCSC within 7 days of the date of the

provision of the travel pack of any error that is contained in the travel

arrangements as upon expiry of the 7 days, the clients are deemed to

have accepted that the clients’ travel arrangements are as set out in

that travel pack.

PAYMENT FOR TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

The clients agree to make payment for the travel arrangements

strictly in accordance with the schedule set out in the Invoice.

If the clients fail to make payments in accordance with the schedule,

then upon that failure, the clients are in default under the terms and

conditions of this agreement and the travel arrangements are

deemed cancelled as at the date of default.

PAYMENT FOR LAND CONTENT OF TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

Where by virtue of the value of the Australian dollar, the costs for the

land content of the travel arrangements exceed those stated in the

Invoice, the clients agree to pay that excess and TCSC will provide to

the clients a tax invoice for the excess. Should the clients fail to pay

that tax invoice within 7 days of the date of receipt of same, the

clients are deemed to be in default under this agreement and the

travel arrangements are deemed cancelled as at the date of that

default.

CHANGES TO TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS- BY CLIENT (“CLIENTS’ CHANGES”)

The clients may alter travel arrangements, but only by giving a written

instruction to TCSC as to the changes required. Each change will

attract an administration fee of $100 and any increase cost

occasioned by the change will be the subject of a tax invoice provided

by TCSC to the client. Should the client fail to meet payment of the

amount on the tax invoice within 7 days of the issue of same, the

clients are deemed to be in default under this agreement and the

travel arrangements are deemed cancelled as at the date of that

default.

CHANGES TO TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS BY TCSC (“CLASSIC SAFARI CHANGES”)

The clients acknowledge and agree that for a whole series of reasons,

TCSC may have to alter the travel arrangements up to and including

and throughout the travel period. The clients agree that no claim for

compensation can or will be made against TCSC if such a change has

to be made, as long as the change is made on the basis of reasonable

justification and that alternative arrangements are put in place by

TCSC that are of the same quality as those set out in the travel

arrangements.

CANCELLATION CHARGES

The travel arrangements can be cancelled by the client but only by

providing TCSC with a written notice of the client’s intention to do so.

Where a tour operator or airline company has a cancellation policy

different to that set out below, then whatever that policy is or might

be, that policy shall apply to any cancellation of travel arrangements

with that tour operator or airline company.

If such a cancellation policy does not exist, and if the client wishes to

cancel travel arrangements, and the cancellation notice is received:

60 days or more prior to departure – the client will forfeit the

deposit paid;

between 60 and 30 days prior to departure – the client will forfeit

of 50% of the cost of the travel arrangements;

�30 days or less prior to departure – the client will forfeit the

whole of the cost of the travel arrangements;

as shown on the Invoice, or applied because of client changes.

REFUNDS FOR UNUSED PORTION OF TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

The clients acknowledge and agree that the travel arrangements are a

package and that the client cannot choose to select portion of the

travel arrangement and be refunded in whole or in part for those

portions unused.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

The clients acknowledge and agree that where the clients request

TCSC to book travel insurance, that the clients have undertaken a due

diligence of the company providing such insurance and has satisfied

himself, herself, themselves or itself that the travel insurance is

adequate to insure the risks of the client. The clients acknowledge

and agree that the clients do not in any way rely upon, nor do the

clients expect TCSC to be an expert in the selection of the insurer, the

insurance package, the policy or the premium rate to be paid by the

clients to the insurer in respect of the provision of the policy or the

terms and conditions of the policy and as to whether, in the

circumstances of the clients and the travel arrangements, the

insurance is adequate to protect the needs of the clients. TCSC is not

an expert in travel insurance, the selection of the supplier of travel

insurance or in the terms and conditions that form part of a travel

insurance policy, nor is TCSC an expert in appreciating the cost that

should be occasioned to the client for payment of the premium in

relation to such insurance. The clients agree and acknowledge that in

arranging such travel insurance for the clients, the clients and TCSC

are not entering into any contract for TCSC to so provide advice as to,

or to supply such insurance policy.

The clients acknowledge and agree that DFAT travel warnings may

void travel insurance, and that it is the responsibility of the clients to

monitor warnings.

PASSPORTS & VISAS

The clients agree and acknowledge that it is the clients’ obligation, at

all times, prior to, at the time of and throughout the travel

arrangements for the clients to hold the appropriate passport and

visas in order to be able to undertake and complete the travel

arrangements. The clients acknowledge and agree that whilst TCSC

may assist in the obtaining of the necessary visas to assist the client in

being able to undertake the travel arrangements, that the rules and

regulations in relation to the issue of the visas, particularly in the

countries to be visited by the client during the travel arrangements,

change and do so without notice. The clients agree and acknowledge

that although TCSC may have assisted the client in obtaining such

visas, the client does not rely upon TCSC to have provided correct

visas that comply with the then current law of any country which the

clients enter, or intend to enter, during the travel arrangements.

FORCE MAJEURE

The clients agree and acknowledge that TCSC cannot and will not be

held responsible or liable by the clients for changes:

to itineraries and accommodation and in relation to travel

arrangements as a result of any matter, manner or thing outside of

the care and control of TCSC, including inclement weather, civil

unrest, Acts of God and the like;

in local conditions and events, unpredictable, or predictable.

THE CLIENT ASSUMES THE RISK OF ENTERING UPON THE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

The clients acknowledge that the clients have undertaken and will

continue to undertake up to, including and throughout the period of

travel in the travel arrangements, his, her, their or its extensive due

diligence and ongoing due diligence in relation to the travel

arrangements. The clients here acknowledge and agree that the

travel arrangements are to take place in countries and regions and

under circumstances where (not necessarily in the travel

arrangements):

standards of health care;

the provision of trauma and health services;

standards of hygiene generally;

standards in food preparation;

occupational health and safety rules, regulations and training;

the provision and wearing of safety equipment; and

safety checks on transport, equipment, vehicle, aeroplanes and

equipment;

used and/or provided in the travel arrangements, are or may be of a

lesser standard (and substantially so) than in Australia.

The clients acknowledge and agree that the provision and wearing of

safety equipment whilst the client is undertaking activities that would

normally require the client to wear such equipment, provision of

emergency equipment and trained manpower; training of staff in

emergency procedures and generally may not be up to the standard

of first world countries and may be substantially below that standard

or non-existent. The clients agree and acknowledge that the clients

accept that as a result of the travel arrangements, those travel

arrangements may involve potential and actual exposure to injury

and possibly death of the client, or a person or persons accompanying

the clients during the period of travel.

The clients acknowledge that the extensive due diligence and

continuing due diligence in relation to the travel arrangements

include the clients’ attention being drawn to the DFAT travel warnings

in relation to that or those places in the travel arrangements to which

the clients are to travel. The clients agree and acknowledge that the

clients has satisfied himself, herself, themselves or itself as to

whether or not it is safe to travel to the destinations so stated on the

travel arrangements.

The clients also agree and acknowledge that any such due diligence

has been undertaken up to and including the time of travel and

during the period of travel.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN AND WHAT IS EXCLUDED FROM THE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS?

The clients acknowledge and agree that the only services to be

provided are those specifically set out on the Invoice and in the travel

pack, and no more and as a consequence all other experiences that

may be had whilst the travel arrangements are in place, are at the

cost of the client. The following are not a part of the travel

arrangements:

personal travel insurance;

travel insurance;

visa, passport and vaccination charges;

airport departure and airline taxes;

any meals, transport costs, accommodation costs or other

expenses that are not included in the travel arrangements;

laundry, postage, personal clothing, medical expenses and the

items of a personal nature;

emergency evacuation and/or emergency search charges;

additional expenses caused by delay, accidents or disruption to

planned itineraries;

tipping and excess baggage charges;

beverages (unless as otherwise in specified in the Invoice); and

any item not specifically detailed as included in the travel

arrangements.

JURISDICTION

The laws of New South Wales, Australia shall apply to this agreement

and anything that emanates there from. In respect of any dispute,

claim or demand in relation to this agreement and anything related

either directly or indirectly to it, including the provision of and the

enjoyment of the travel arrangements by the client shall be

commenced and continue in a court with a registry in the central

business district of Sydney and no other. Where a party to any such

proceedings is a party to this agreement, and as a result of the rules

of the court in which the proceedings are commenced, may transfer

the proceedings to another registry, the parties agree that such

parties shall not so transfer.

HEALTH AND FITNESS OF THE CLIENTS

The clients acknowledge and agree that TCSC has made no enquiry

whatsoever as to the fitness, health or otherwise of the clients to be

able to undertake the travel arrangements and to complete them in

accordance with those set out in the Invoice, or at all. In this regard,

the clients acknowledge that the clients have undertaken whatever

steps are necessary in order to check the health and physical

condition of the clients and the ability of the clients, having regard to

the clients’ health and physical condition, to undertake what is set

out in the travel arrangements.

NO AGENCY

TCSC identifies a person, persons and/or company whom or which

can supply to the clients the appropriate goods and services to allow

the clients to be able to undertake the travel arrangements and at the

instruction of the clients, contracts for and on behalf of the clients

with that contractor in order for the contractor to supply to the

clients those goods and/or services.

At no time is TCSC an agent for the contractors nor are those

contractors an agent for TCSC.

The Akademik Sergey Vavilov and her near-identical sister ship Akademik Ioffe - are considered by many to be the two best polar expedition ships in the world. These vessels were purpose built to conduct sensitive hydro-acoustic research in the polar regions. In order to fulfil their scientific work, it was a design requirement that the ships offer a very high level of stability. This stability is achieved through a sophisticated, internal trimming system which manages 450 tons of water ballast. As a result, these ships are the most stable expedition vessels navigating Antarctic waters. This feature is something you will greatly appreciate should you encounter less than ideal conditions while transiting the Drake Passage.

Akademik Sergey Vavilov is highly manoeuvrable. With both bow and stern thrusters and twin reversible propellers, the ship can spin on its own axis – greatly assisting embarkation of the zodiacs in windy conditions. When you are listening to the underwater sounds of the ocean as this ship was built to do, you need quiet engines. When aboard, you’ll notice there is little – if any – ambient noise or vibration, making for an exceptionally quiet ship. Finally, the Akademik Sergey Vavilov is comparatively fast, with a top speed of 14 knots in open water.

Unmatched stability, coupled with superior speed allows for more time at your destination (rather than ‘at sea’) and more flexibility with itinerary planning – a critical factor in icy Antarctic waters where ice and weather

conditions sometimes dictate your itinerary. Throughout the ship there are spaces ideally suited to every need. Spacious outer decks provide 360 degree views of the stunning Antarctic landscapes – as well as a great place for an outdoor barbecue, which happens at least once on every voyage. Inside there are comfortable presentation spaces for lectures and film screenings and there’s a multimedia computer lab with several large screen workstations where guests can download and back up photos. There is an open-bridge policy and guests are welcome to meet the navigating crew at virtually any time of day; there’s always something to learn from the officers on watch and the bridge is one of the best places on the ship for spotting whales and sea birds. The ship also features a Finnish sauna, a plunge pool, a hot water outdoor Jacuzzi, a small gymnasium and day spa with massage therapist. There are six different cabin categories to choose from all with outside windows allowing ample natural light to filter into the cabin. Cabins all have lower berths (triple share cabins have one upper/lower bunk scenario and feature port holes). Specifics of cabins are outlined below. The Akademik Sergey Vavilov carries a maximum of just 92 guests – making for true, small-ship expedition cruising. Finally, with your safety in mind, there is a well equipped medical clinic on the ship and an experienced wilderness medical physician accompanies every voyage. What’s it like on aboard Akademik Sergey Vavilov? The easiest way to describe it is to imagine the expedition ship as a ‘floating wilderness lodge’. Days are filled with exciting activities – zodiac cruises to look at icebergs, excursions ashore with short and longer hiking opportunities, visits to penguin rookeries, seal colonies, historic huts and science bases – combined with plenty of ship-based activities, including an entertaining and informative presentation series. Relax on Board Akademik Sergey Vavilov is a true expedition vessel and she is surprisingly well equipped and comfortable on board. She has undergone continual upgrades in recent years to cabin amenities and through all of the public spaces. She is thoroughly modern and the perfect platform for exploring Antarctica. One of the most celebrated features on this ship is the location of the lounge and bar. Situated on Deck 6 and adjacent to the bridge, this spacious area features comfortable lounges and armchairs, large picture windows and provides direct access onto the outer observation deck. The lounge is a great place to spend time, updating your journal, or enjoying a hot beverage while mingling with fellow guests and expedition staff. Enjoy a fresh fruit smoothie before breakfast, grab a bottle of water before an excursion or enjoy a cocktail before dinner. A good selection of international wines, spirits and beers, as well as soft drinks are available from the bar throughout the day. There are tea and coffee station operating 24-hours per day in the lounge area. There is also a permanent library on the ship stocked with many books on polar exploration, wildlife and history. Out on deck, there are many places where you can sit and watch the world go by. The bridge is generally ‘open all hours’ and the chart room is a popular place for anyone interested in navigation.

Great Dining Options The exciting schedule of onshore excursions, zodiac cruises and onboard activities are guaranteed to work up a serious appetite. Although the ship operates at the bottom of the world, you can expect an exceptional variety of healthy, tasty meals, prepared by a team of professional international chefs. Breakfasts are usually buffet style. Lunches offer a great choice of light meals - as well as more substantial options for those who are hungry - and each evening there is a hearty three-course meal offering both variety and choice. There’s also an excellent wine list featuring a range of Argentine and international wines. You can get a cup of tea or coffee at any time of the day or night and we always offer afternoon tea with cakes and biscuits. Guests with dietary restrictions or special meal requirements are also well catered for.

Polar expedition gear package included A journey to the Polar regions requires a fair bit of planning and some special items of clothing and equipment are needed. When you travel aboard the Akademik Sergey Vavilov, you will have use of an expedition wet weather gear package free of charge, which includes a quality waterproof/windproof jacket and bib-pants as well as insulated, comfortable rubber boots, designed for extended walking. This saves you buying expensive items you may only ever use once, and eliminates the need to carry such cumbersome gear all the way to South America. If you do have your own gear, of course you are welcome to bring it.

Camping in Antarctica Imagine finishing dinner on board the ship and then jumping into the Zodiacs for a run ashore with your sleeping bag and bivvy sac (swag). Wow! This is your opportunity to camp ashore in Antarctica! Picture it… lying in your sleeping bag listening to crackling and grumbling of glaciers, the splintering of icebergs and the soothing sounds of water and brash ice washing onto the pebbly beach. Perhaps you might even hear the blow of a whale, feeding in

the bay near your campsite. After your night ashore, you are transferred back to the ship for a hot shower and a hearty breakfast. All of the camping gear required for your night ashore is provided and there is enough aboard the ship for everyone who hopes to enjoy this unique experience. Night time temperatures rarely drop below -3°C, and the sleeping bags are rated to -12°C. There are also tents for use ashore if you prefer to sleep under canvas. The cost of camping is INCLUDED in the price of your expedition aboard Akademik Sergey Vavilov. Most other companies charge extra for this once in a lifetime Antarctic experience. NOTE: The aim is to camp on every voyage, but this activity is dependent on favourable weather and ice conditions. It is also less likely to happen on 18-night Falkland Islands, South Georgia & Antarctica itineraries, as the ship often repositions to a new location throughout the night. Sea Kayaking in Antarctica Sea kayaking allows you to experience another side of Antarctica and highly professional guides will introduce you to a slower paced, quieter polar experience. Kayak excursions are offered whenever weather conditions permit and you can expect to get out around six or seven times over the course of your voyage, for periods up to three or four hours. The programme is directed at any passenger with an adventurous spirit and a some previous paddling experience. This option MUST be reserved at the time of booking and attracts an additional charge of $US795 per participant. You will need to complete a special questionnaire outlining your previous paddling experience.

Safety There are no compromises here. The expedition staff and crew onboard the Akademik Sergey Vavilov have the deepest respect for changeable Antarctic weather and the varying sea and ice conditions. That respect is apparent in every decision made throughout the voyage. The ship carries the most extensive inventory of safety equipment on all excursions and require leaders to undergo vigorous and effective safety training programmes. Your expedition team are well prepared, so you can relax and enjoy your voyage.

Travelling Alone? No problem - many expedition guests do. If you are considering travelling solo to Antarctica and wish to avoid paying a single supplement, you can be matched up with a fellow expeditioner of the same gender. It’s a system that works well and saves you having to pay a single supplement. If we can’t find someone suitable to share a cabin with, you’ll have sole use of the cabin at no extra cost. You won’t be forced to pay extra. Some solo guests however prefer to have exclusive use of a cabin. In this case, a single supplement does apply, which is 1.5 x times the cabin price. (2 x times in suites). Ask us for details.

Akademik Sergey Vavilov : Cabin Overviews One Ocean Suite: Located on Deck 5 - this is the premier cabin on the ship and features a queen size double berth. Sleeping quarters are separate from the spacious lounge area and feature upgraded bed and bathroom linens. All have one queen/double berth located in separate sleeping quarters, a comfortable sofa (which can convert into a third berth), a large writing desk and arm chair and an alarm clock. Washroom facilities are private. Additional features and amenities: Upgraded bed linens and doonas, CD player/mini stereo system with connection for an IPod player, fridge/mini bar, hairdryer; capsule coffee/tea maker, toiletry kit, vanity kit, luxury cotton bathrobes, an arrival gift basket with snacks and a bottle of wine. An IPad with pre-loaded movies, documentaries and music is provided for your enjoyment. Also included an expedition dry-bag and a set of quality Bushnell binoculars for you to use while onboard. Superior Cabins: There are 3 Superior cabins, all located on Deck 3. These cabins feature two lower berths, a comfortable sofa, a writing desk and chair and plenty of storage space. Washroom facilities are private and all cabins have a several portholes, which open. These cabins provide great access to the outer decks, ship reception and dining room and the expedition mudroom where you prepare for your off-ship excursions.

Twin Cabins - Private Facilities: These cabins are located on Decks 3, 4 and 5. All twin private cabins have two lower berths, a writing desk/chair and ample storage. Washroom facilities are private and all cabins have a window which can be opened. Doors open onto the fore and aft observation decks on these levels. Additional features and amenities include: a toiletry kit, hairdryer, coffee/tea maker, IPod compatible clock radio, fluffy bathrobes.

Twin Cabin - Semi-Private Facilities: Located on Deck 4, the Twin Semi-Private cabins are the lead-in twin cabin category. These cabins have two lower berths, a writing desk and ample storage. Washroom facilities are semi-private (the washroom is shared with the cabin next door). All cabins have a window which can be opened. Doors open onto the fore and aft observation decks on these levels Additional features and amenities include: a toiletry kit, hairdryer, coffee/tea maker, IPod compatible clock radio, fluffy bathrobes.

Triple Cabin - Shared Facilities: Located on Deck 3 these cabins have upper and lower beds in a bunk scenario and a third lower berth that can convert to a sofa during the day. Facilities are shared and the toilet and bathroom is right across the corridor. There is a wash basin in the cabin, as well as a writing desk and chair and ample storage space. These cabins have a porthole. Bathrobes are provided for all occupants. NOTE: One triple cabin is reserved for male guests and the other for female guests. (Or for groups of three friends, or family group who book the whole cabin at the same time).
