sponsorship proposal
uniting the creative community
Less than 12 months after its formation, Archrival was selected to exhibit in
the Australian Pavilion at the 13th Venice International Architecture Biennale
Hello,
Thank you for considering Archrival’s project for the 13th Venice International Architecture Biennale as a sponsorship possibility. This
project will draw on the support of our creative peers as well as financial corporate sponsorship. Enclosed is a short introduction
to Archrival and our unique practice.
Who is ARCHRIVAL?
Archrival is a non-profit organisation founded in 2011 as a vehicle for creating unsolicited architectural projects. Archrival allows
individual architects, often commercial rivals, to develop ideas and create experimental work outside of normal office hours. Archrival
aims to harness the power of rivalry and combine our skills to create united project teams and innovative public installations. By
initiating collaboration with private companies, manufacturers and creative professionals from fashion, graphic design, interior design,
film and photography, Archrival encourages experimentation and leadership in design. We strive to open up discussions about
projects and ideas, and to create stronger links between the creative and commercial parts of our industry.
Archrival’s agenda is to expand the practice of architects and public engagement with architecture. We create site specific public
work through proactive, self-directed projects. We operate without clients, find our own venues and funding, and explore the
potential to create dynamic work environments focused on collaboration and experimentation.
Within six months of its establishment, Archrival was selected to exhibit in the Australian Pavilion at the 13th Venice International
Biennale of Architecture. Archrival represents a unique new practice in Australian architecture, looking to re-define the future of
the industry.

Formations: New Practices in Australian Architecture
The Australian Institute of Architects has appointed Anthony
Burke and Gerard Reinmuth with Toko Concept Design as
the curators of the Australian Pavilion at the 13th International
Architecture Biennale. Together they bring a wealth of
experience in architectural practice and a deep understanding
of the evolutionary processes happening across the
architectural profession. Entitled ‘Formations; New Practices
in Australian Architecture’, the exhibition will showcase six
innovative architectural practices that are playing a critical
role in shaping the future of Australian architecture.
In December 2011, Archrival was selected from a field of 124
competitors and will present their work alongside Healthabitat,
Supermanoeuvre, Richard Goodwin, 2112Ai (100YR City)
and The Architects Radio Show.
The Institute has coordinated Australia’s presence at the
Architecture Biennale since 2006 and is committed to
supporting the event until at least 2016.
This exhibition represents one of Australia’s only opportunities
to showcase design excellence to an international audience. It
enables Australian architects to have a valuable presence and
contribution to the forefront of architecture and design.
“The appointment of our 2012 Creative Director team affords us
a great head-start in the promotion of the nation’s incredibly rich
and diverse architectural talent.“
Venice Biennale Commissioner Mrs Janet Holmes à Court

The installation
Archrival will create a site specific installation exploring
the themes of rivalry and collaboration. The installation will
be located in the forecourt of the Australian Pavilion, that
frames the entry to the exhibition and provides a venue for
events. Archrival will create a dynamic forum for international
exhibitors and curators to discuss their work. By facilitating
both rivalry and collaboration simultaneously Archrival will
offer a unique encounter with the Giardini.
Project purpose
The profession of architecture is currently being redefined. The
future is unforeseeable but Archrival provides a platform from
which to respond to changing conditions. Archrival’s installation
will expand the relationships between international curators,
exhibitors and the audience by providing an interactive
and seductive landscape. Beautifully crafted, prefabricated
components will be assembled on site by the project team in
the courtyard space between the Australian Pavilion and the
French, Czech and Uruguayan pavilions. The work will not only
signpost the Australian Pavilion, but will expand the work into
the “neutral” territory of the Giardini itself.
International Collaboration
Archrival is instigating unprecedented connections between
the national pavilions in the Giardini by collaborating directly
with international curators. We are currently in discussion with
the curators from the UK, USA, Uruguay, Slovakia, Denmark,
Switzerland, Argentina, France and more. This innovative work
will create a fundamental link between the Australian Pavilion
content Formations: New Practices and the international
pavilion’s theme: Common Ground.
Project outcomes
• Create beautiful site specific installations that temporarily
transform a space and place
• Catalyse change in the identity of the architecture profession
• Establish an international network to create opportunities
for new collaborative projects
• Influence change in architectural practice by inspiring
individual architects to change the way they work
• Create new work using innovative materials and through
alliances with other creative professionals
• Enhance public engagement with architecture

Archrival was founded in 2011 by architects Claire McCaughan and Lucy Humphrey.
Both are practicing architects based in Sydney; Claire is a Project Architect at Sam Crawford Architects and Lucy runs her own
practice Lucy Humphrey Studio. Archrival was formed as an independent practice, where unsolicited projects could be created
outside of day to day commercial architectural practice. Both Claire and Lucy have extensive experience in local and international
projects from concept design to project completion.

Concrete Colony was a site specific installation for the Keystone Festival Bar during the Sydney Festival 2012. Using an innovative
new fabric material, concrete canvas, the installation was comprised of gracefully formed chairs, benches and ottomans. The site is a
world heritage listed venue, and these evocative objects are both functional and sculptural additions to the festival bar, sited beneath
an historic tree in the Hyde Park Barracks. Concrete Colony was made by an invited team of architects, interior designers, a fashion
designer, graphic designer and an industrial designer. Archrival held workshops over a 5-day period where individuals brought a
recycled chair ‘relic’ that could be used as formwork for the concrete fabric. Each piece was made by up to 5 team members and a
communal notion of authorship, complemented by the group curation of the pieces on site at the Barracks. This collaboration was
an integral part of Concrete Colony as it is to the practice of Archrival. The installation was part of the Sydney Festival, Australia’s
leading arts festival held annually in January. This project was sponsored by Burdens Australia.

The concept for Eleventh Hour was to challenge designers to create a site specific work within a set time frame, physical space
and conceptual framework. A ‘terrain’ of archways was assembled within the gallery space of Bay 19 that referenced the iconic
architectural elements of the industrial Carriageworks building, and evoked the scale and form of the locomotive vehicles that once
occupied the space. This terrain was then manipulated by a vast communal effort, with the specific intention to reflect on the original
atmosphere of the train workshops and create a space of furious production. Counter to the restrained gallery/object/ viewer
relationship, the work was in constant flux, where individuals came to weave black thread throughout the archways and create new
connections within the terrain. Participants were able to expand the work freely and worked without any fixed aesthetic direction.
The form of the work emerged over the 10 day exhibition period, responding to evolving circulation corridors, thresholds and
changing levels of light and shadow.

Much Lead, an installation of suspended pencils donated by the local design community, was held at Object: Australian Centre for
Design during Art & About 2010. This installation explored the idea of the pencil as a simple tool held in common by many disciplines.
The pencils were donated by designers, makers, artists, tradespeople and students. The undulating canopy of colour drew together a
surprising, cross-disciplinary community of pencil lovers. During the exhibition period, unexpected connections and outcomes were
created when the dynamic colour coded form was suspended by fine coloured threads and participants searched for their individual
pencil contribution. The project was a collaboration between Claire McCaughan, Felicity Gartelmann, Sam Crawford Architects and

This project was an installation for Sydney’s Sculpture by the Sea exhibition in 2009. Based on the natural occurrence of highly
reflective rock pools along the coastal walk, Alchemy merges the natural and the artificial in a celebration of the changing forms of
the rock shelf. A series of 21 organically shaped steel mirrors were created to fit within a series of contours along the waterfront,
revealing reflections of the sky and the changing effects of light during different times of day and weather conditions. The mirrors
ranged from 0.3mø to over 3.7m in length, designed to both articulate and blend with the changing environment, rather than
being a decorative insertion. The result was a surreal landscape of reflections constantly changing in colour and texture. This work
explores the relationship of built materials to nature, using a single material to realise the concept. The work explores the possibility
to connect with naturally occurring phenomena through public installation and experimentation with materials. This project was
generously sponsored by CMS Surveyors, Ox Industries - T&M Overexposure, and Adohr Stainless.
