LEDGERS

Introduction

The large collection of ledgers in the holdings of the Lennox and Addington Historical Society include business record s dating from the early 1830's until after 1900. Legers and cash books of general merchants predominate, but the re are also records of other enterprises. Fo r the sake of shelf co nvenience, records of some societies, or clubs, are included in this grouping. Ledgers may be located by the labels attached to acid-free sleeves. Sleeves should be replaced before res helving .

Appointment Books of William Henry Wilkison, Solicitor

The young William Henry Wilkison was soon to be appointed County Court Judge. The e ntries in the diaries are brie f, and pertain mostly to legal business. Spine reads "Chancery ' ronfains reminders of up-coming court cases, Napanee-Belleville-Kingston. 972.438 2. A Rowsell's Diary as above, fo r 1867 . 972.427 3. A Rowsell's Diary as above, for 1869. 972.439

These records were found in a vault over the Bank of Montreal in Napanee, where the Metzler Insur ance Office was located. This space was previously occupied by G.F. Ruttan's Law Offices.

The Records of The Napanee River Improvement Company

This company was incorporated in 1866 to improve the supply of water for manufacturing purposes, based on American models. It was empowered to acquire land in the same way as timber companies, to acquire mill priviledges or dams, and to borrow money on debentures. Problems arose almost immediately. Flooding of farmland brought conflict with farmers; dams impeded timber drives and brought conflict with the Rathbun Company; failure to control water flow irritated Napanee mill operators; and upstream municipalities wanted a share of the taxes gained by downstream municipalities where the mills were located. Politics were frequently involved because one of the biggest shareholders (and owner of the Big Mill at Napanee) R.J. Cartwright was a Liberal, but the majority of the remaining shareholders and the first President, D.B . Stickney, were staunch Conservatives. Both sides employed political patronage. The Company was involved in the development of hydro-electric power at the end of the 19th century, but at the same time new sources of energy were breaking the dependance of manufacturing on the river . The Company finally disbanded in 1962.

THE RECORDS OF THE NEILSON STORE, Stella, Amherst Island

The Neilson Store was founded in 1870 and has served the citizens of Amherst Is l and for over a century. The first building proved too small for the expanding business, and a new store was cons t ructed in 1883. The Daybook entry for 29th October, 1883 reads: 11 Moved into new store today 11

• The store imported general merchandise and drygoods to the Island, and exported grain and vegetable crops for the farmers. The store also served as a post office, and, in the 20th century, as a gas station. The records of the Neilson Store are unusually complete. They were presented to the County Museum by the Neilson Family in 1983.

Accounts Receivable Book, 1877-1890 This book lists accounts owing to the Neilson Store. It is the only book of its kind in the collection.

Cash Sales This little book lists strictly cash sales, 1897-1912.

Daybooks (1875-1954) Daybooks were used in the Neilson Store to record over the counter transactions day-by-day. Rough daybooks were used in the shop, and later the transactions were transferred to neater, more formal books. 1875-1876 Daybook 1878-1879 Daybook #4 1879-1881 Daybook 1882-1883 Daybook July - May 1883-1884 Daybook June-May 1884-1885 Daybook 1886-1887 Daybook May-March 1887 Daybook April-July 1887-1888 Daybook April-April 1887-1888 Daybook Nov. - July 1901-1903 Daybook 1903-1905 Daybook 1905 - 1906 Daybook (Nov. 1905-Apr. 1906) 1906-1909 Daybook (May 1906-1909) 1909-1911 Daybook 1911-1913 Daybook 1913-1915 Daybook 1914-1916 Daybook 1916-1917 Daybook [Sp i ne damaged] 1917-1918 Daybook 1921-1922 Daybook (Nov/21-Nov/22) 1922-1923 Daybook 1923 - 1924 Daybook 1924-1925 Daybook 1925-1927 Daybook

THE CHARLES STEVENS PAPERS

Introduction

In the mid-1800's, a young Englishman, Charles Stevens, came to Napanee. Starting at the foot of the ladder, by diligence and honest dealing, he prospered and became one of the best-known business men in Central Ontario. His business was manufacturing and exporting. From Napanee he shipped his produce to Noval Scotia, to the New England States, as far south as Florida and as far west as Ohio and the Middle States, and to Europe.

He started a fuel business where now is the new Post Office. He produced potash and fertilizer and made the barrels in which these products were shipped. He also founded an independent newspaper, the Napanee Star , and wrote and published a book. For nine years, he was a councillor for West Ward and in 1894-5 was the Mayor of Napanee.

He had four children. Myrtle became a teacher and lived in Toronto. Mrs. Florence Root, a music teacher, lived in Stratford. Marian Stevens, a nurse, lived in Napanee and a son, Clayton Stevens, is believed to have retired to Florida.

It is believed that Charles Stevens built the house at 178 Bridge Street West, where he lived until his death.
