Introduction

Dear Sir or Ma’am,

First off, I would just like to show my appreciation for taking a look at my portfolio. Hopefully my work will leave a lasting impression on you and will truly show my capabilities as a designer. My passion for architecture is present everywhere I go. Growing up in a suburban area, I grew accustomed to seeing building after building that simply were not reaching their design potential. Simply put, there were many buildings; there was not much architecture. As my journey into the design profession reaches new levels, I have come to realize a major goal of mine in terms of the field: to make good design a commodity rather than a rarity in everyday life. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,Kyle C. Cooper

The Retreat

The Retreat was the final project of the first year Environmental Design program. It is a retreat located on a hypothetical site adjacent to a lake. The Retreat is meant to accommodate an owner plus one. Some required programmatic features include a lap pool, furnished house, and access to the lake via rowing shell. In prior projects, we explored topics such as spatial hierarchy and extension using a simple cube. This was the project to show off what we learned from those studies. My concept for this project was “protruding planes”. Ink on mylar.

Sunset Funerary Chapel

The Sunset Funerary Chapel is a structure adjacent to Sunset Cemetery in the town of Manhattan, Kansas. The goal of the building is to provide a sacred space of gathering for loved ones before the burial of the deceased. Required programmatic elements include both group and individual chapels, a service bay, exterior spaces, and a welcoming space. My goal forthis chapel is to make people feel a sense of spiritualarise once they are inside. The foundation is built upto counter the site’s slope. This elevates peopleabove the ground upon entry creating a sense of floatation. Ink on mylar.

Dallas Senior Center

The Dallas Senior Center is a multipurpose facility intended for older citizens. Located on the corner of Live Oak and Cantegral, it is just outside the heart of downtown Dallas, Texas. The facility is a place where seniors can gather for exercise, meals, and meetings. The building includes a recreation room for exercise, game room, library, clinic for medical help, and cafeteria. For this project, we were urged to choose a specific form type for our Center. Out of set piece, elemental, cellular, and figural types, I chose set piece due to its simplicity and orthogonal properties- qualities that I see fit for this program. My goal was to encourage movement and gathering among senior citizen users. Ink on mylar.

Stuart Island Retreat

The Stuart Island Retreat is a secluded, private getaway located in the San Juan Island archipelago off the coast of Washington state. Programmatic elementsaccommodate one couple with one bedroom, one bathroom, and a living space. The house is meant to act as a weekend retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the couple’s main residence, Seattle, WS. It is located in a very mountainous landscape that is scattered with evergreen forests. The residence is only accessible by boat. The main focuses of this project are envelope enclosure and timber structure. So, I made it a priority to make the living spaces very open, while service spaces are more closed. Bowman Design Forum | Kansas State Boathouse

The Bowman Design Forum is an annual competition among third-year architecture students at Kansas State. Each professor chooses one representative from their studio to present their design in the Forum. Each representative receives feedback from distinguished jurors; this year’s jurors included architects from The Miller Hull Partnership based in Seattle, and Bowman Bowman Novick, a local firm in Manhattan, KS. The goal of this competition is to design a successful boathouse for the Kansas State women’s rowing team. The site is on the shores of Tuttle Creek Lake, a lake that exists on the outskirts of Manhattan, KS. Hand and digital production.
