This design-based Master programme focuses on the rela ons between architecture and todays complex urban condi on. It seeks to foster projects that are the outcome of a sustained and rigorous process of study; that are inves ga ve, poe c, and theore cally informed; and that deal in a cri cal way with issues and ques ons of pressing contemporary relevance for the city. ...The empty and unfi nished tower which has been in its current state for more than three decades seemed like an alien to its surroundings, as if its presence itself is just an illusion although its striking scale and height against the vast and monotonous urban landscape of Athens is tangible. The a empts of salvaging urbanism in Athens are ini ated by crea ng juxtaposi on between the tower, the complex condi on of the city, and the agency of the people. This is followed by the reintroduc on of the tower as a common ground in order to re-establish the dialogue between the city, the port, the people, and the tower itself. In the end, the project aims to pass the once empty, unfi nished, and unexplored Piraeus Tower back to the people by crea ng means to occupy and u lize it.
Yet, it is intriguing to work on the emp ness, as it is not as austere as it looks on the periphery. It is not as simple as arranging some func ons into plans and sec ons. There are many aspects lie behind the emp ness of the tower, either directly or indirectly; either cleary seen or invisible; either touchable or intact. These no ons are par cularly sensed during the design process, especially when it came on se ng the programma c strategy of the project. There are ques ons that kept emerging during the me, such as, What does make the towers emp ness di erent with the other buildings emp ness? Why does it seem alluring yet elusive? How to take place in the absence, in something insubstan al like a ghost? Am I actually being haunted by the tower? Why and how would the project work - whereas no discourses from the government have ever been successfully realized? - and exactly from which led me to deeper research on the fundamental natures of the tower that render the Piraeus Tower Project: the emp ness, void, and spectrality. These three aspects ar culates the projects gesture and language, as well as how this book is compiled. The book will discuss each of them sequen ally while keep refl ec ng back on the project itself.
...Through Piraeus Tower, this project seeks to examine the possibility of synthesizing the nature of the tower and the public realm in the specifi c current condi on of the city; It re-introduce the public realm without erasing the emp ness and unfi nishedness of the tower. The project posi ons emp ness as an unexploited poten al and juxtaposes it with the agency of people as the given-variable. There is an opportunity here to compress needs and social aspects within the tower. The project does not want to produce controlled common space, but instead tries to reconnect the dialogue between the three par es: the city, the people, and the tower itself. This no on of redefi ning the tower is intriguing; how to work on enduring-unused space, which is an absence? How to make it func ons within the city? Is it possible to exploit the social power as a new capital which allows the building to re-operate? Therefore, this disserta on aims to inves gate this way of salvaging urbanism of occupying the empty, unused, unfi nished tower by refl ec ng on emp ness and spectrality which render the contemporary Athens nowadays.

As fate would have it, many decades a er groundbreaking, the 25-storey tower (84 meters height) s ll remains a grandiose urban carcass that haunts the skyline of the port of Piraeus. There, in the bustling port, thousands and thousands of commercial ships come and go in clockwork fashion under the silent presence of the incomplete giant, an image which truly jus es the tle of an un nished work in progress. An image that clicks in the mind as a silent invita on to (re)-act against the prospect of such a gigan c perpetuated degrada on. - A. Vandoros and G. At the beginning of the studio we will travel on the eld trip to the city and there we shall engage with various interest groups and agencies and will develop our knowledge about the current urban situa on in Athens. During the study trip you are each asked to develop interests in a part of the city for which you will elaborate a signi cant urban and architectural proposi on. Inevitable we are seeking projects that are the outcome of a sustained and rigorous process of study, that are inves gate, poe c, theori cally informed, and that deal in a cri cal way with issues and ques ons of contemporary relevance for the city.
A er the eld trip, you are asked for a site recording and spa al and material strategy. The aim of the recording is to develop cri cal analysis and representa ons of your sites that begin to point toward speci c design responses and possibili es. Based on your interpreta on and analysis of the site, you are asked to give us a new reading of it, one that emerges out of quali es and condi ons you have discovered. This may be to do with pa erns of use or ac vity that you have observed, or with historical condi ons and material layering, with complex permeability with the city around, or with traces of events inscribed upon the surfaces of the site, etc. The challenge is to shi away from the apparently neutral forms of urban representa on that architect characteris cally work with, toward something that is much more speci c that begins to ar culate an argument and to indicate a point of entry into the design. - Mark Dorrian, project brief Design Research Studio 1_Project B Field Trip + Salvaging Athens, 2012.

Inspired by the compressed city and the vessel, and the nature of the tower and the users, the project proposes to do a compression of occupied spaces hence it will not overwhelm the emp ness of the tower altogether with open up the tower to the surrounding; for such a long me having been secluded from the world of living, the tower deserves to be acknowledged. Through shi ing the volumes, the voids and the pockets are created in return. While leaving the voids and the exis ng condi on empty as it used to be to pertain the emp ness and unfi nishedness, the pockets are posi oned as the compressed container of the programs.The interplay of solids and voids are addressed in the arrangement of the pockets of occupied spaces and rough empty condi on; and only by being aware of the contrast between these two condi ons we can rejoice the state of the tower as it is, and as one of the dis nct urban feature of Piraeus.
Through the ver cal voids, the tower will not be understood only as a big stack of layers of func ons and programs that are separated from each other, but as one con nuous process which is constantly linked with the city. The project intends to create a dis nct landscape within the tower itself - taken as a con nua on of the urban fabric beyond.

If the experience of being in the tower is taken as a journey of salvaging urbanism in Athens, the roo op is the end of it. It can be taken simply as touris c experience for the tourists, or can be a transit to exchange ideas in discussions for the conference par cipants, or as the ac vi es generator for the locals. The roo op aims to be the materializa on of the concept of emp ness and as the common ground itself - as the free space within the [hec c] city, as a way to revisit and rejoice the freedom and also as a way to form and intensify the par cular bond between city and people. Then, by emphasizing all of these poten als, the tower can stand as a place to anyone in the city and be func oned at last.

Temporality feature performs in conjunc on with the fl exible usage of space and me. The spaces can be adjusted and be available according to the peoples needs. Some func ons that are open in the summer, such as outdoor cafes and rented lockers (in rela on with the high number of tourists) can be disassembled, and then have the space used for a local Christmas market in winter. Another example, the stay zone is basically collec ve clusters of knock-down sleeping boxes. When the demand is low, some of the boxes can be dismantled and stow in the storage. The idea is to keep the stay-ing space compressed and not overwhelming the emp ness. Another alterna ve scenario is to use it as a temporary homeless shelter if the sleeping box scheme is not working.

The castle of Lindisfarne is located in the historical dal island - Holy Island on the Northumberland Coast. Both the vehicles and pedestrian passage (St. Aidans pilgrim pathway) will be submerged at high de and the island will be cut o from the main land. The landscape of the island itself is characterized by an outstanding and powerful expansiveness - a blending of horizon, sea, sky, and the contour of the ground itself.
The yellow lines shown here is for the vehicles route while do ed lines resembles the pedestrians. There are also more to see besides the castle in Holy island - The Lough and Emmanuels head where some of the rare birds and plants are located. However they are located quite far they are not very popular amongst the short- me visitors due to the distance.
The project is about making observa ons in a landscape and taking up posi ons within it. It also about scale and visual posi on, and the architectural e ects resul ng. 2 construc ons of di erent scales, which sit in rela on to one another. one will be of a very small scale, but will be careful calibrated to a micro-site in the castle interior which is then able to be read in rela on to larger construc on in the landscape beyond. - Mark Dorrian, project brief Design Research Studio 1_Project A: Sigh ng Lindisfarne, 2012

The project is insipired by the spa al sequence of the castle, of the in macy and repe ous framing and layering which captured through the viewfi nder of a camera. This is the study of delamina on of the photographs and how a two dimensial image becomes three dimensional and ambiguous object.

As a dal island, Holy island will be disconnected from the main island. The pavilion construc on is in a way also disconnected from the main path at night for it is immersed in darkness. It can s ll be seen from a distance as fl ickering lights, but unreachable - as the island at night; It can be seen but unreachable.
As in the castle, the journey starts from the visual framing (which radiates ambiguity), then to the spa al pressure (tension) and ended in a abstract quality of release. The pavilions concept is to repeat the previous in macy, framing, layering, and enclosure within the castle. Thus the rela onship between the window and pavilion is retrospec ve through the memory of the visitor.The pavilion aims to rejoice the beauty of the surroundings, of the vast and expansive landscape : the sea, the sky, and the grassland. It is all about the rela onship between the landscape, the spa al in macy and pressure, and the landscape exposure to the vistors. The sleeper space which is made to be the end of journey - is oriented through the window towards the outside that punctuates the release quality of being back to the landscape beyond.

In this innova ve, emo onal, and enviromental value-driven compe on, aimed for the middle-class society, I set balance as my design concept. I suggest to fairly op mize the space - including the spcae for maid quarter which o en is not taken seriously into the current design prac ce. Therefore, the design tries to make a balance for all users. The ground fl oor is dedicated to the service zone which is prac cally one of the most important parts of a house; posi oning itself as the public zone of the house. In prac ce, this also eases the maid to help opening / closing the door, or to socialize with the neighbours without disturbing the private zones. Likewise, by stacking the private zones up above, it will help the owner of the house to gain control of the whole house. All the zones are connected through the void which gives clear visibility all way through. The operable windows and shading help the cross ven la on and air circula on to occur, as well as natural daylight to happen inside without having too much glare of the tropical sun. The house use the steel as main strcuture for its fast assembling, reclaimed wood for the shading, calciboard for the walls, then glass and steel frame.

In this project, the client asked for a place to sell wines and food. He aimed for a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, a place to have either a li le chit chat or proper meals with a sip of wine.
The requirement is pre y straight forward, it is we want to introduce and sell more wine (as wine shop is considered new to Indonesian). Thus, we come with the idea of using wine [bo les] as part of the facade. This will also op mize the space - they dont need any storage (stock) room.

The owner is a family of four, which both parents work as photographer. In this house, they would like to stay close to the children (home) while working at the same me. Privacy will be a sensi ve and important ma er that grounds the design of this house. Moreover, the dayligh ng and natural ven la on are also highly considered for the comfort of the users as they will be stay and work at home (almost) all day long,

Since this school is located inside the shopping mall, the space has given already and limited. The constrain is to fi t in all the needs in that space. The strategy then is to have a secondary (upper fl oor) and make all solid elements be compressed, such as having the furniture as space-defi ning elements, transparent par ons for spacious feeling. The facade itself is inspired by ba k as Indonesian tradi onal pa ern, as a hint of the uniqueness and locality of EF Indonesia.

The refurbishment is basically based on the same concept; this one is the prototype for a shop-house type. The di erance is that this type usually requires a durable second-skin facade, therefore we slightly change the ba k facade design into something modular and two dimensional to ease the construc on. For this, we propose to use a laser-cut cladding. We also add a prayer room and wet areas such as toilets and pantry. The facade shown in this por olio is agreed already but the execu on has been suspended due to owners private circumstances.

This is a house for a businessman and his family; their request is simple. They want a resort of tranquilty, a home to relax from the bustling city. Having the site located just beside the golf course, the main idea of this house is to open and frame the view to the landscape beyond. The design tries to op mize the circula on of fresh air, as well as the daylight and shade for the house by orien ng the mass accroding to the movement of the sun.
