UNIMELB ARCHIVES Site PlanThis project was part of Studio A for Studio Fire in Semester 2 of 2014 . It is based around designing a new building for the University of Melbourne Archives. Click HERE for walk through video.

The Archives are located near the corner of Albert St and Sydney Rd in the heart of Brunswick. The challenges of this site included working with the surrounding buildings and attracting the crowd from Sydney Rd.

Page 5: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

5

Basement Storage SystemsThe storage system in use is vital as it is the core function of an Archive. The systems were selected for efficiency and easy of use. The Model Wired Powered Mobile storage shelf (1) was the key product as it accounts for 60% of the total storage.

One of the operational requirements was no sunlight into the Archives. Due to this majority of the archives were placed underground in the basement. With the inclusion of two vertical access points the circulation was kept in-line with the NCC Fire Exit requirements and allowed easy access for staff.

Page 6: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

6

Ground F loor Program Organisat ionThe major program is on the ground floor as its the most accessible. There are four different zones, Apartment, Archive, Public Areas and Staff Areas. Each zone has multiple areas in it and each area has different brief requirements.

The program is based on key brief requirements. Firstly the areas that require sunlight are spread around the edge of the north-west boundary. Then the Archive which require no sunlight is developed from the south-east corner. The entrance from north-east is used to engage the crowd on Sydney Rd.

Ground Floor Program

Level 1 Street Disturbance

Page 7: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

7

Program Organisat ionLevel 1The purpose of the garden is the experience of place, instead of the purpose of the place like the basement archive. The language used in plan reflects this and creates journeys for people to explore. Areas closer to the street are open areas due to greater disturbance.

Screen

The purpose/function of an archive limits its interaction with the general public. By creating a public garden on the roof top this area can be used anytime of the day by the community, while also creating interest in the archives for the public.

OUTRE G ALLERYThis project was part of Studio Fire in Semester 2 of 2014. The site is on the corner of Sydney rd and Albert st, adjacent to the UniMelb Archives.

It is based around designing a new Gallery/Showroom for Outre Gallery, They already have a store on Elizabeth St CBD and are looking to expand. The three main experiences of the building are the Cafe, Art Gallery and the Book Shop.

Page 11: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

11

Page 12: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

12

Ground F loorThis design is based on the concept of cabinets of curiosity. Each major functional area of the building has its own cabinet, they are separated with a gap, but still connected via walkways. Creating bridges in-between them. Creating the feeling of a separate building.

There are cabinets for the Book Shop, Cafe, Gallery and the service areas and apartments are combined into their own Cabinet. The Cabinets are organised based on importance of street frontage, with Sydney Rd frontage being the most valuable as it is the most active.

Page 13: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

13

Level 1 Sacred vs ProfaneAfter designing the cabinets some disruptions emerged. The purity of each cabinet was being distrusted by the profane areas such as the cash registers. The alley way in th middle acts to pull people out of the cabinets after they have finished, without disrupting the cabinet.

The experience of each cabinet is designed to be unique and express different emotions to the people the inside. Even though each cabinet is designed for a different experience all cabinets try to engage the user and create a space for them for reflect and relax.

Page 14: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

14

Level 2 Si te PlanThe Bedrooms for the apartment are the only things that are placed on this level. This is to separate them from the remaining building on Level 1 and create a more private environment.

L AGI DES IGN COMPE TIT IONThe Land Art Generator Initiative Design Competition was the design brief for Studio Air Semester 1 2014. It is based around designing public art that generates clean energy for the City of

The design response had to be parametric, this was done using Rhino and Grasshopper. For full design process & response, please look at Studio Air Journal Part C, HERE. This project was part of a group.

Page 17: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

17

The energy generation system created for this project used Algae to produce oils that can be refined for commercial use in cars. Each wall consists of two grid structures, one for the Algae circulation and one for structural integrity.

Energy Generat ion Concept

Page 18: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

18

Site Layout ModelPart of developing a parametric response for this project was the level of detail in the model. Digitally this detail is visualised in rendering and so on, however for physical representation multiple models are needed to convey the same information, using detailed fabrication methods.

The site layout model is used to represent the overall configuration and layout of the walls on site.

Page 19: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

19

Connect ion Deta i l ModelWal l Component ModelThis model was used to show the components in each wall and how they were organised and connected.

This model shows the connection detail between each component in the wall, down to the bolts used.

BOATHOUSEThe Boathouse was part of Studio Water for Semester 2 of 2013. This project is based on a redevelopment of the current Studley Park Boathouse in Kew.

The design response was based on responding to the site, integrating elements of the site such as water, rocks and vegetation. One of the particular challenges of this site was the slope of the landscape.

Page 21: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

21

Page 22: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

22

The design response on the ground floor was based around attracting the public into the cafe and allowing circulation, that kept the private office spaces separate to the public area while also allowing both areas access to communal areas such as toilets.

Ground F loor

Page 23: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

23

The Restaurant is designed to be more formal with its dedicated kitchen. It is made more flexible with the addition of the outdoor area adjacent to the restaurant. This can be used by the restaurant or by the public.

CENTER OF MODER N ARTSThe center of modern arts was a project done in Studio 1B in Semester 2 of 2012. It was a design competition for the Brunswick Flee Market who were looking to open a new portable market in St Kilda. The Designs were based on Shipping containers.

They had to be transportable interstate on trucks as the market would shift on rotation. Once fully opened the Arts Centre is used to sell and create art work in forms of paintings and sculptures.

ARCHIVAL G ALLERYThis project was part Studio 1B in Semester 2 of 2012. The site is based in the heart of Geelong CBD, it is an old car park that is going to be redeveloped.

The Archival Gallery is a combination of an Archive and an Art Gallery. There were unique challenges for this project, particularly dealing with the public access in the gallery and the security of the archives.

Page 28: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

28

BasementSect ion & Elevat ionsThe Art Storage and Secure Archives are placed in the Basement as they do not require regular access and particularly not by the public.

Page 29: Architecture Portfolio - Atinder Handa

29

Ground F loor Level 1The spaces on Level 1 are generally more private and secure, the major publicly accessible area is the reference space which is used as library and reading area.

Only half of the street frontage is used on the Ground Floor, this is to allow the public to flow through as the site analysis revealed this was currently happening. The Outdoor Exhibition is used to engage the public and tries to draw them into the Gallery Space.

CONSTRUCTION DES IGNThis subject was in semester 1 of 2014. The task was to investigate construction technologies and methods by de-constructing and analysing the new Dandenong High School building designed by Hayball. A physical model and digital CAD section were used help deconstruction the building.

This is the section of the building that we were tasked with deconstruction and analysing. Particularly investigating the unique challenges this building presented to the architects.

CONSTRUCTION A N ALYSISConstruction Analysis was focused on analysing the construction technologies and methods involved in residential construction. The case study for this subject was the Hampton House by JCB Architects. This was a group project.

The construction phase was split into twelve stages and for each stage we developed a plan and section of an allocated section of the house.
