based on the visions of renownedand internationally recognizedartists, architects and designers arefounded into perfectly handcraftedworks of art. The interplay betweenartistic and creative expression andtraditional handcraft skills are whatmake Strassacker’s method of workso unique.

Culture evolved as the result of thehuman capacity to express oneselfartistically. With no other form ofart are the possibilities for expressi-on greater than with sculptures –the object, the sculpture, and theplastic. The advantage of sculpturesas compared to images is justifiedby the third dimension; the portrayed object has a physicalaura and is thus much more similarto the original than a painting or adrawing could ever be. It is regarded as the German coun-terpart to the Hollywood Oscar anda reflection of what interests andmoves our society: the Bambi, theprize with which the publishinghouse Burda has been honouringnational and international personali-ties from cinema, theatre, music, fashion, politics, business, and sportfor over 50 years.

Germany’s most significant andoldest media prize honours peoplewho touch, impress and inspirepeople with their achievements. Wehave been casting the Bambi for 46years. Every Bambi is an original, asthe casting mould is manufacturedby hand and battered after thebronze has cooled off. Not untilafter the precise and detailed workof the chaser and numerous compli-cated manufacturing phases doesthe ultimate form emerge from themould. It then attains its inimitableshine in the galvanisation bath,

which then rounds off the work ofart. In line with the wish for amore modern Bambi expressed bythe Burda publishing house, thesculptors in our studio designed anew dynamic version of the Bambi, which still taps into the traditionalBambi though.

The creation of the silicon mould

In order to create a casting mouldfor the wax smelt mould, a waxpositive of the respective object isrequired for every individual castingprocedure. In order to obtain thispositive wax model, which preciselymatches the original model and canbe smelted later, a flexible negativemould has to be created first. Inorder to do so, each half of the ori-ginal model must be overlaid withclay plates, which are then coveredwith plaster. Once the so-calledcement support shells are dried, theclay layer is removed and bothshells are laid into the model again.Afterwards, the liquid gelatine orsilicon is poured into the respectivehalf of the hollow cavity betweenthe original model and the cement. The »true-to-original« negativeform is now ready for the creationof the wax positive.

Depending on their form and size, the individual models are cast inthree different procedures, usingtechniques which fall back on acentury-old tradition. Accordingly,up to 20 different work stages arenecessary until the original modelbecomes a finished work of metalart. On the basis of his/her model,we advise every artist on which ofthe casting procedures can be used.

Sandcasting is mostly used todayfor easily formed items. More com-plicated objects are cast using thewax smelting procedure. This procedure offers more possibili-ties for artists who would like totouch up their work with waxthemselves or with the support ofthe craftsmen. For smaller plasticsand objects difficult to mould, thevacuum cast procedure is an addi-tional option.

Since the metal cannot be castdirectly into the flexible negativeform, the positive wax model mustbe developed in additional worksteps. To do so, both halves of themould are put together and hotwax is poured onto them. Afterseveral minutes of cooling off, awax layer develops. The excess waxis then poured out again, so that ahollow wax model comes about. This unfinished wax mould is filledwith a chamotte core, then touchedup by the artist again and finallyenhanced with casting canals. Thewhole object is then enveloped withchamotte and baked in the oven for

five to eight days at more than600°C until the wax has smeltedand the hollow cavity is completelydried out. In this hollow cavity during the nextstep, the liquid bronze heated inthe crucible oven at approximately1250° C is freed from the cinderand then poured into the bakedmould all at once. Many artistswant to experience this moment, when their sculpture is cast.

When manufacturing ceramic, runner moulds are added to thehollow wax model, which is thendipped into the ceramic mass fourto six times depending on its size, and then dried. The shell formedduring this process, which has aheight of 8 to 10 mm, is baked inthe oven. The wax smelts duringthis phase and the shell becomeshard enough to absorb the fierymetal. After cooling down, theceramic shell is broken down.

Sandcasting, a still frequentlyapplied and time-tested technique,is used for reliefs, inscription plates, coats of arms, and small sculptureswith few undercuts. Casting sandhas a particular consistency. Its fine-ness allows for detailed models. When pounded with compressedair it attains a high density and thenecessary stability for casting. It isthen poured into the cast cavitiesand hollow spaces. Afterwards, thiscasting mould can never be usedagain. The artist’s model made ofdurable material – generally plastici-ne, wax, plaster or wood – isdeconstructed according to its form, before the art designer spreads itinto moulding boxes with two ormultiple sections. Since casting sandis not elastic, all undercut batchesof a model must be cast with sand

pieces which can be pulled outfrom the side – in so-called corepieces. The ready pounded exteriormould is taken apart once again inorder to take out the model, oncethe core pieces have been pulled offby means of the core fork and adju-sted into the negative mould again. Now the initial cut system is cutinto the mould with the requiredinlets, pouring funnels, and ventila-tion canals including feeders. The artist has the possibility ofaccompanying the further work oradding the finishing touches him orherself. The artists and craftspeopleoften work hand in hand during thedetailed chasing procedure and thefinishing stages.

After moulding, the unfinished pro-duct is further processed in the cha-ser workshop until the artist’sdesign has been put into practiceexactly. After the cooled chamottecover has been chopped off, theunfinished product is cleared andthe surface quality evaluated. Theartist him or herself frequently deci-des how the surface of his/hersculpture is processed to give it itsactual shine and life-like quality.Once the chaser separates the inletand outlet canals and perhaps haswelded together multipart pouredmaterial, he then virtuously shiftshis attention to reworking the sur-faces with a chaser iron (punches),a chisel, a file, a scraper or sandingor polishing tool. Faces, musclesand ornaments are then elaboratedon meticulously, while the peculiari-ties and nuances of the object areaccentuated and underscored.
