Interviews

Communication between school and home is fundamental to a student’s success. Teachers will be scheduling interviews, which will take place from November 17th through December 12th. Look for this information to come home with the progress report on November 14th.

Celebrating Kindness

While we place importance on being kind to others year round, November is the month where anti-bullying and kindness are officially recognized internationally.

On Monday, November 17th an assembly will be held to kick off Kindness Week, and a number of activities have been planned by school staff to bring kindness to the forefront at ASES, not just for that week, but to continue throughout the year.

Ask your child about the actions he or she has taken to be kind to someone.

We tend to forget that a seemingly insignificant kind action or word can make a world of difference to someone without our even knowing its impact!

Student Council

Congratulations to Kyle Davis and Liam Little! They were elected by the school as our Prime Ministers for the 2014-2015 school year.

Magazine Campaign

Thank you to all family members, friends, and neighbours who supported the ASES magazine campaign this year. This year our profits were down somewhat, but we raised about $16 000. Funds raised will be used to purchase new gym equipment such as sets of snowshoes and new team uniforms, as well as new technology.

Artists of the Month

Congratulations to November’s ASES artists whose work is now on display in our front foyer. This new collection showcases the artistic talent of. Vanna Goodrich Sullivan - Mrs. Howard’s class, Billy Bradley - Mrs. Smallwood, Beau Harnois – Ms. Kampstra, Beau Beaudry – Mrs. Alleway, Jaiden Mueller – Mrs. M.O., Kaden Card, Maya Johnson and Charlotte Moynes – Mrs. Coneybeare, Emma Gillam – Mrs. Callaghan, Haley Boylan – Ms. Brouwers, Ali Gottschalk – Ms. Kernohan/Ms. Smith, and Kyle Davis – Mrs. Adams.

Recognizing Character

In addition to our beautiful Character Tree in the foyer, be sure to check out the display case at the top of the steps on your way into the junior hallway, where a new display has been created to celebrate the successes of several of our students who demonstrate excellence in the monthly character traits. For the September character trait of Goal Setting, our hats are off to Dylan Jordan, McLean Rowden, Austin Jordan, Ella Moynes, Hannah Kehoe-Harding, Dane Roylance and Aiden Neave.

The display will be changed monthly. October’s character trait of Perseverance will be highlighted later this month.

Head Lice Tips

There have been a few occurrences of head lice recently. To help prevent its spread, we suggest you take a few minutes to check your child occasionally. Listed below are a few tips for checking and treatment:

Checking for Lice

1. Start behind the ears. Comb the hair section

by section. Separating the hair with clips

helps.

2. Place comb against scalp and pull to the end

of the hair.

3. Check comb for lice after each pull.

4. Wipe the comb with a tissue each time and

look for lice.

5. Repeat combing every part of the head at

least 5 times.

6. Bag the soiled tissues and throw it in the

garbage.

Treating head lice

There are a number of effective treatments for

infestations of live lice. Most contain an insecticide

that kills the lice. Treatment products require a

second application 7 to 10 days after the first

treatment.

Examine all of the household members for head

lice every day for 3 weeks after the first treatment.

Preventing the spread of head lice

Teach your child to avoid direct contact with the

head of someone else, and not to share brushes,

combs or head gear (hats, hairbands, etc).

Do head checks for live lice regularly and daily

during an outbreak.

Braiding or tying back long hair is a preventative

measure during an outbreak.

Cleaning requirements

Wash clothing, bedding, etc. in hot water for 15

minutes or place items in the dryer on the hottest

setting. Also wash items that have been in

prolonged or intimate contact with an infested

person (bedding, stuffed animals, etc.).Items that

cannot be washed should be placed in a sealed

plastic bag for two weeks or for 48 hours at -10° C.

Clean personal hair care items (combs, barrettes,

etc.), repeating daily until lice are gone.

ASES Athletes Perform Well

Congratulations to Brooke Stover, who placed second at the Regional Cross Country meet in Lindsay on October 7th. ASES runners who also finished in the top 10 were Alex Little-5th, Shawn Walker-6th, Charlotte Moynes-7th, Daniel Rivard-8th, and Sterling Nesbitt-9th. The junior runners competed against approximately 125 competitors in their respective category, and the seniors about 70—so a Top 10 finish is quite impressive!

Our Senior Boys Soccer team had a successful day at the tournament held at ASES October 17th. They won one and lost two of their games. Athleticism and sportsmanship were demonstrated throughout the season by the following team members: Denver Allore Brady Baldry, Quintin Beaver, Jaxson Campbell, Nik Dollo Ethan Gohm Jesse Johnston, Liam Little, Ati Baricz, Austin French, Jackson Gartshore, Owen Gilbert, Daniel Rivard, Logan Roylance, Dane Roylance, Nigel Smith, Billy Walker Shawn Walker, and Sam Wilson. A special thanks to students who helped at the tournament: Caden Little for doing the lines and Sydney Smallwood who did lines, and to Braden Kirkpatrick, who also assisted Mr. B.

The Senior Girls team, coached by Ms. Smith, showed true Wildcat spirit at the Zone tournament. Unfortunately, the team did not qualify for County. A shout out goes to Hannah Packard for being a phenomenal goalie throughout the tournament! Team members were Hailey Anderson, Belle Beaudry, Haley Boylan, Destiny Cooper, Carley Gullins, Trista Greer, Jessica Hannah, Jasmine Jawanda, Grace Kim, Alexius Mills, Hannah Packard, Denni Rivard, Gillian Rosik, Denise Sherbakov, Hannah Taylor, and Karley Wilson.

The Junior-Mixed soccer team had a great season with a lot of students participating in every practice. For the tournament they travelled to J.D.H. and won their first game! The next two games were very close, but the Wildcats were unable to claim victory. It was a great day and the students all represented Archie Stouffer with class and enthusiasm. The hour-long wait at the end of the day showed their true love for the game and the companionship of sport.

Team members were Georgia Code, Emily Davis, Jessica Lee, Danaya MacDuff, Ella Moynes, Maria O’Malley, Ava Smith, Brooke Stover, Zachary Finnie, Davis Gartshore, Sam Hoenow, Scott King, Alex Little, Cody Martin, Tyler Martin, Dawson

Mueller, Nathan Miscio, Brenden Newhook, Matteo O’Malley, and Ben Pilcher.

Christmas Food Drive

Our Student Council plans to hold our Twelve Days of Christmas Food Drive again in December. We will be looking for a variety of non-perishable food items, and non-food items such as toilet paper and toothpaste. If families were to set aside some of these articles in the coming weeks, they will be greatly appreciated. Details about the drive will be published on the December newsletter and on the school web site.

Mental Health Survey

Please read the letter attached to this month’s newsletter about a child mental health survey to be conducted in the coming months. The government is seeking the input of families across the province to complete a survey about the mental health of children aged 4 to 17. The data collected will be used to find ways to develop programs and services designed to improve the mental health of youth in Ontario. If you are invited to participate, please say ‘yes’ to the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study and School Mental Health Surveys.

Mindfulness –Appreciate Surroundings

Staff and students continue to build knowledge and skills around practices which impact our ability to self-regulate. Recently we have been learning about the RAS, or reticular activating system, which is located in the stem of the brain. It is the RAS that filters out distractions and helps us attend to what we need to be doing. When the RAS kicks in, it can help us focus on the right things which will help us achieve our goals!

We are also starting to practice Mindful seeing and Mindful listening. Slowing down to observe and listen without distraction helps us to truly appreciate our surroundings, such as a spectacular November sky at sunset or the pleasing sound of leaves crunching under our feet or the silence of a clear windless fall evening. Take time with your child at home to learn about these practices and try them.

Thursday is Family Hub Night

The Hub night has started up again…join us every Thursday from 6 – 8 pm for a free meal and fun activities led by Point in Time staff!

Dental Screening

Dental screening will take place early in December for students in JK, SK, Grades 2, 4, 6 and 8. Please see attached notice.
