AQUILEIA TOWN GUIDEAQUILEIA TOWN GUIDEAQUILEIA TOWN GUIDEAQUILEIA TOWN GUIDE
Aquileia was founded by the Romans in the 2nd century BC as a military city; in the following
centuries it became an important provincial capital of North-Eastern Italy, thanks to its river
port and the excellent direct connections. During the Empire of Caesar Augusto it reached a
stable population of 200.000 inhabitants.
From the beginning of the Christianity it was an important religious site, also had it great de-
structions to sustain during the period of the invasions of the Barbarians; the Holy Basilica,
many times enlarged and reconstructed, is the exceptional testimony of this. The Patriarchate
of Aquileia was of primary importance during the dominion of the Republic of Venice.
A visit of Aquileia shows you an exceptional wealth of archaeological findings and museums;
all this in a modern and pleasant environs, not far from the sea and the main centres in the re-
gion Friuli-Venezia Giulia
