Dear Parishioners: Edmund Burke wrote that man is a religious animal. Every human being worships — either God or an idol. This is not to say some people keep statues of idols, but there is something they worship. Even atheists have a belief system. They believe, for example, that our universe came out of nothing or has always been in existence. They arrive at this conclusion because they believe there is no God. There are several atheistic churches growing around the world these days. I think part of this follows on Burke’s assertion that we are all religious. Human beings have an inbuilt desire for communion and sharing of faith even it is in logic. They want a Christian ethic [except for sexual morality] without the Christ. Some will say they are spiritual but not religious. They sincerely desire to find some meaning and purpose to life. All of us should be on a life-long journey to deepen our spiritual dimension. Part of our very core is a spiritual being in whose image we are modeled. So we all should be on a sincere interior journey of spirituality. A problem arises when we decide we are spiritual but not religious because we set ourselves as our own guides without the benefit of any church structure. We become our own arbiters of what should be believed. Venerable Fulton Sheen relates the story of the three kings who after their arrival at Jesus’ birth place first entered as individuals. First, a young man entered and found himself talking to a young man; the second, middle-aged man found himself talking to a middle-aged man; finally the third king, an old man, found himself taking to an old man. The three of them were quite perplexed at this. They went in together and behold, they saw a baby. You see, individually Jesus meets us at whatever stage of life we are. God deals with us as a son or daughter with our history, talents, etc. To see God as he is, we need the benefit of the Church. No one has an exclusive track to God. This should not be a surprise since we are made in the image of a community [Three who are one — One who is three]. The Communion of Persons who is God is at our very core. Some will vigorously proclaim that they are an individual, which is partly true. At the same time, no one is just an individual — you are always more than an individual. You are greater than the sum of our parts. So to be spiritual but not religious is to deny a core part of your identity. As Catholics, our spirituality will always be individual and corporate in nature. Should it be more individual or corporate? In some ways this is not a fair question since being a Catholic is more like being a member of the family. We are not a club or merely a religious society. Yes I am an individual in my family, but I am also a son, brother, friend, etc. I belong to you and you to me because we are all sons and daughters of God. We are always horizontal and vertical simultaneously — it is what makes the cross without which our spirituality will always be less and a bit off track. If we are not on the right track, the train will not arrive at the correct destination. We now have some 30,000 different Christian denominations across the globe. This cannot be the holy will of God. These denominations do not teach the same doctrine nor practice their faith in the same fashion. Perhaps this week we could all spend some time reflecting on how well we know our own faith. Maybe I was a bit neglectful about growing in knowledge of our teachings. In some instances I may have drifted away not out of malice or dislike but because I have held on to my pride and not humbly listened to God or his Church. Whatever the reason, let this week be a time of discovering the areas of my faith where I need to look deeply and rediscover our deep spirituality, goodness, truth and beauty and path of life that is my (our) heritage. Pax et bonum, Msgr. Bill

Today’s Readings First Reading — Ezra read from the book of the law of God to the assembled people. They understood and accepted the law (Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10). Psalm — Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life (Psalm 19). Second Reading — As the body with its many parts is still one body, so it is with Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-30 [12-14, 27]). Gospel — While attending worship in the Nazarean syna-gogue, Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah and declares himself to be the fulfillment of the prophecy (Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21). LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST Some of Saint Paul’s best known and most beloved image-ry is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sa-cred scripture more accurately sum up how Christian voca-tions work together. Unlike some of Paul’s other writings, which are a product of the social and religious conventions of his time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what voca-tions the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. We can likewise know the joys and sorrows of the other members of the Body and share in them for the strengthening of the whole Body of Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Guayaquil Did you know that St. Vincent's parish supports a mission in Guayaquil, Ecuador? Yes, that's right. Parishioners of St. Vincent's have over the years donated money and items which have helped build a school for underprivileged children in a very poor neighborhood of Guayaquil. The school is named St. Vincent de Paul after our own parish school, and each year students from our school donate their used uniforms which are sent to the students in Guayaquil. On April 23, we will be holding our annual Guayaquil Gala which provides the primary source of funding to continue the operation of the school, i.e. pay teacher salaries, buy needed equipment and assist with student tuition. We are all called to spread our faith and help our brothers in need. We need your support to ensure the continued suc-cessful operation of this important mission. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the gala.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus reads the words of scripture: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.” Have you considered answering the call to “bring glad tidings to the poor” by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? To access more information on the Society go to www.svdp-houston.org>organizations. The St. Jude Chapel Poor Box proceeds are used by SVDP Society to benefit those in need. Donations may be made at any time.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
