EVENT HUNTING LODGE Built Medieval

(1)The hunting lodge of Freemantle Park from documentary evidence was extant in 1183. The building of the house is recorded in the Pipe Rolls for 1180- 1183. Henry III in 1251 ordered a new house to be built. It was to consist of a hall, kitchen, chapel, first floor chambers and cellar. Stabling for 80 horses is also mentioned. The building was finally completed in 1256. In the 2nd half of the 14th C references to the Kings Lodge within the park were made. The lodge comprised several 'houses', some tiled, others thatched. (2) Isaac Taylors 1759 Map of Hampshire and early Ordnance Survey Maps show the supposed site of King John's House on top of King Johns Hill (or Cottington's Hill). Finds B-D recovered from hill top supports this siting. Most of the area of the hill top has been disturbed in the construction of a wireless station. No evidence of the exact site of the hunting lodge has been obtained. (1956). (3) Two short linears running parallel in a E-E direction seen on APs; part of settlement

EVENT BANK (EARTHWORK) Excavation Modern

Excavation carried out Nov 1997 to further investigate linear feature identified during evaluation. Confirmed that feature runs N-S and then curves significantly so as to run SW - NE. This corresponds with the existing visible earthworks located on the north side of Cottington's Hill. Therefore, is most likely to be part of earthwork enclosing hill. Profile of ditch does not suggest Iron Age date, so is unlikely to be suggested hill fort. Ditch contained recent fill of post-medieval brick & peg tiles. No definite dating evidence, but most probably medieval earthworks related to documented Hunting Lodge.

1997-

EVENT BANK (EARTHWORK) Evaluation Modern

Archaeological field assessment carried out by Winchester Museums Service in July 1997. Evaluation revealed 3 features; 1) a wide linear depression running E-W; 2) linear trench in base of Feature 1 conatining fragments of ceramic tile and 1 sherd of glazed grey stoneware; 3) feature running N-S intrepreted as ditch related to visible earthwork situated north of Cottington's Hill. Therefore, could be part of earthwork enclosing hill, so related to documented Medieval Hunting Lodge.

EVENT DITCH Created Medieval

Two converging linear ditches were identified during the 2011 watching brief. It is impossible to determine which ditch was cut first though they are thought to be roughly contemporaneous with the 13th/14th C pottery sherds recovered in the fill.

EVENT CIRCULAR ENCLOSURE Unassigned Medieval

(1)'Entrenchment' on top of Cottington's Hill. Single ditch and bank enclosing c 15 acres, of which c 2 acres has been surrounded by an inner ditch and bank and built over. (2)Remains of a damaged univallate, near-circular earthwork enclosing c 9 acres of the summit of Cottington's Hill. Earthwork originally comprised a bank and outer ditch with counterscarp bank . The bank has been deliberately levelled on the north side. In the middle of this stretch the surviving scarp of the bank has been inturned for 3.30m. Damage to the earthwork possibly caused by construction of the hunting lodge (SU55NW43A) and the wireless station. Classified as a univallate hillfort of Iron Age A date. (1956, confirmed 1967). Classification of earthwork as a hillfort by OS not conclusive. No corroborating evidence. (JB 1986). There has never been any dating evidence to place the earthworks within the Iron Age - it is more likely that are associated with the hunting lodge, and thus of a medieval date (AG 2009)

EVENT MANOR HOUSE Unassigned Medieval

(1)The descent of the Manor of Sandford can be traced from Domesday when it was held by Oidelard of Ralph de Mortimer. The estate continued in the possession of the Mortimers until the middle of the 13th Century. It was then given to the nunnery of Godstow and the Abbess and convent remained in possession of the manor until the Dissolution, when it fell into the hands of the King. Site of the Manor of Sandford is marked today by Sandford Farm and Sandford Wood. 3) First documented in AD 1240 as SANTFORD(E) = Sandy Ford. (2)The present farm house at Sandford, on or near the site of Sandford Manor House, is of plain brick with the central chimney bearing a date of 1670. Timber framing exposed in the upper part of the east wall may indicate earlier 16th C work. (1956). No trace of earlier manor house seen. (1967).

EVENT DESERTED SETTLEMENT Unassigned Medieval

Possible deserted medieval village. Aerial photographs show several linear features that may relate to a possible area of settlement. In 1342 a grant of land was made that had formerly been the land of Nicholas of Stubbington (Himsworth 1984, 12514). The name Stubbington appears in some other references to properties in Kingsclere in the medieval period. A map of Canham-Heath Farm of 1763 (HRO 23M50/98) shows three large fields on the east side of the Overton-Kingsclere road which are described as the 'North, West and East parts of Stubbington Field'. On the west side of the road there is a field called 'The Croats'. A map of 1800 based on a map of 1725 (HRO 10M57/19) calls this field 'The Crofts' and the road in this area is described as 'formerly Stubbington Street'. In 1800 the area of the fields of Stubbington was called 'Stubbington Warren'. The southern boundary of Stubbington's fields was The Portway Roman road. Modern vertical APs show several linear features in this area but it is not possible to definately link them with the possible area of settlement.

EVENT RABBIT WARREN Unassigned Medieval

A rabbit warren is shown on a map of 1763 (HRO 23M50/98). There are documentary references to several warrens in the area to the south of Kingsclere in the medieval period and this warren was probably one of them. The 1763 map also shows a house near the site. The modern OS 1:10,000 marks the site as 'The Warren'.

EVENT HUNTING LODGE Unassigned Post Medieval

A map of 1763 (HRO 23M50/98) shows Canham Heath and Farm. The map shows a group of buildings including a large house and several ancilliary buildings within Canham-heath Park. The park, which had been enclosed forming several fields probably had The Portway as its southern boundary whilst the western boundary also formed the Kingsclere parish boundary. The north-west part of the boundary, also the parish boundary, was a curvilinear. The large house and the farm are also shown on a map of 1800 which was based on a map of 1725 with ammendments (HRO 10M57/19). The Farm survives but the large house and associated buildings have been demolished. It is not known whether there are any earthworks on the site. The large house may have been a hunting-lodge. Further reserach is required to date the creation of the park and the building of the house/lodge. In 1800 the area was called Cannon Court Warren, probably indicating that there were rabbit warrens in the vicinity. There were several warrens on the chalk downs to the south of Kingsclere in the medieval period (see Monuid 39603).

EVENT DEER PARK Created Post Medieval

A map of 1763 (HRO 23M50/98) shows Canham Heath and Farm. The park, which had been enclosed forming several fields probably had The Portway as its southern boundary whilst the western boundary also formed the Kingsclere parish boundary. The north-west part of the boundary, also the parish boundary, was a curvilinear.

EVENT NEGATIVE EVIDENCE Watching Brief Modern

During a watching brief foundation trenches were dug to a depth of 1.2 - 1.3m. This revealed a stratigraphy of 0.1m of pea gravel over a former pathway, 0.3m of topsoil which in turn overlay 0.5m of greyey brown subsoil before reaching the natural chalk. The trenches demonstrated evidence of landscaping and susbequently no finds of featres of archaeological significance were identified.
