MOBIUS HOUSE - U.N. STUDIO

The Mobius House is organized according to the family‘s 24-hour cycle. Living and working spaces are aligned but separated, and the common areas are situated at intersections. In such a configuration, there is a sense of privacy co-existent with a sense of togetherness. The passage of time plays an important role in the house.

Movement throughout the house is described by the architects as a walk in the forest, with diverse features on the site framed by the building. Natural light is carefully considered in consideration with the program and is let in through wide glass openings in some areas and blocked off by concrete partitions in others.

The dynamic aspect of movement through the space and the passage of time makes the Mobius House a precedent full of potential for study in the medium of virtual reality.

CASA DA MUSICA - O.M.A.

Casa da Musica is a performance hall that puts on a show of its own. The minimalistic shell contains an interior that contains a myraid of different atmospheres. Light and shadow intertwine across a variety of materials throughout the building. Faceted multi-dimensional textures encourage visitors to explore the theatrical spaces.

The main auditorium space is located at the heart of the building, on the 3rd floor. A series of small rooms are positioned on the upper floors adjacent to the auditorium which offer a different vantage point of the performances.

THERME VALS - PETER ZUMTHOR

Peter Zumthor‘s Therme Vals is a manifestation of an appreciation for bathing and relaxation. The process and experience is of primary concern. A variety of baths are laid out through the building, each with unique characteristics that are reflected in their appearances.

Reflections play an important role in the building as light reflects off of the water and dances onto the walls. Carefully placed skylights create shafts of light that penetrate into the space. Natural light is treated as objects that are built into the architecture.

The use of solids and voids, light and shadow in order to encourage exploration of the building is an aspect that could be fully experienced and analyzed in virtual reality. Zumthor‘s experiential approach to the design makes this building an important precedent to study.
