ARC ADVOCATE
July/August 2014
OUT AND ABOUT WITH THE ARC
We would like to share with you a new
opportunity being organized by The Arc
of Dunn County, entitled Arc – FAMS.
(Families, Advocates and MentorS of
Individuals with Disabilities). Arc - FAMS
will provide an opportunity to talk with
others about the joys and challenges of
raising and supporting an exceptional
child; learn information about resources
and advocacy; and network with other
FAMS (families, advocates and
mentors).
It is our hope to provide a monthly
meeting with area speakers discussing
topics members would find beneficial for
themselves and their families to be more
successful in their journey. Meetings will
take place the second Thursday of each
month from 5:30– 6:30pm in Room 410
at the Alliance Church. We are
appreciative to Alliance Church for their
support in allowing us to use their facility
as we will be able to provide childcare
for the youth while FAMS meet.
FAMS recently held a family event at
Wakanda Park on June 25th
and we were
excited to see so many friends, family
and supporters turn out to connect with
each other.
We look forward to our next meeting
which will be Thursday, July 10th
from
5:30-6:30pm at Alliance Church. The
hour will include a presentation from
Emily Hanson, a local Occupational
Therapist, followed by a discussion
time.
The August 14th
meeting will focus on
collaborating for a successful IEP with
LaVonne Solem and Becky Kimbel,
retired Menomonie School District
Special Education teachers, as our
guests.

Dome Ranch Outing Though the weather was a little warm we
had a great time petting and feeding the
animals at the Dome Ranch. We also made a
craft and had the chance to cook some
healthy snacks using fresh items from the
garden. We hope to go back again next year!
Spirit of the Water Boat
Cruise/Treasure Island As always, our Treasure Island trip was a hit
with everyone who attended. Here is what
Casey H., one of the attendees, had to say
about the trip, “It was my first time on the
boat and it was really cool. The food was
good, the boat staff was nice, and I had fun
taking pictures. It was worth it to get up a
little early to go on this adventure.”
Keep an eye out for our upcoming
fall adventures!
.
In May the sibs had a great time at our
Sibshop Luau. We also had a guest speaker,
Emily Hanson from Foundations Therapy,
who came in and shared with us what an
occupational therapist does and about her
relationship with her sibling with special
needs. Mark your calendars, our next
Sibshop will be held during the Arc FAMS
meeting on Thursday, August 14th
from 5:30-
6:30pm at Alliance Church. Our fall Sibshop
will be held on Sunday, October 5th
from 1-
4pm. To register for either of these Sibshops

The Arc of Dunn County, Inc. started a
Corporate Guardianship Program on July
24, 1989 after being licensed by the
State of Wisconsin. In all those years we
have served many people. Ramona
Bartelt is the current Guardianship
Director. Kathy Lausted and Debra
Drinkman are part-time Guardianship
Assistants.
Recently Ramona and Kathy attended
the Alzheimer’s Convention in the
Wisconsin Dells. Here are a few of the
things that we learned while we were
there:
There are 10 Early Warning Signs of
Alzheimer’s.
1. Memory loss that disrupts daily
life.
We were very excited to have two
students who were interested in doing
their internship and practicum hours
here at The Arc this summer. Angela
Moran and Megan Palma have been
doing a great job assisting with
community programming and doing
some 1:1 mentoring with individuals in
The Arc’s Residential Program. Both
ladies attend UW-Stout and are
majoring in Vocation Rehabilitation.
We welcome Megan and Angela to
our team!
2. Challenges in planning or
solving problems.
3. Difficulty completing familiar
tasks at home, at work or at
leisure.
4. Confusion with time or place.
5. Trouble understanding visual
images and spatial
relationships.
6. New problems with words in
speaking or writing.
7. Misplacing things and losing
the ability to retrace steps.
8. Decreased or poor judgment.
9. Withdrawal from work or social
activities.
10. Changes in mood and
personality.
Alzheimer’s can affect people in all walks
of life. For more information about
Alzheimer’s, go to www.alz.org
