Greenhouses

Monticello Premium GreenhousesSimply The Best Built Greenhouse Around!Description: Constructed with a frame made of the highest quality, U.S. Grade extruded aluminum; these greenhouses have more and stronger aluminum than equivalent imports. They can really hold up through all types of harsh weather. To keep them looking great, the framework is electrostatically painted to produce a beautiful and durable finish.

These greenhouses feature a twin wall system of professional grade 8mm polycarbonate, the same thickness as commercial greenhouses and considerably denser than you’ll find elsewhere. These twin walls act like a double pane window by keeping cool air in during hotter months and cold air out during winter months.

For ease in set-up, the Monticello Premium 8’ x 8’ greenhouse has been designed to take the average gardener 8 hours to assemble. Leveling of the ground and other foundation work is not included in this estimate. We recommend that you allocate a full weekend and two people for prep and set-up.

With an above average interior height, even the tallest gardener will have room to move. Extension kits are available whenever you’re ready to grow.

Additional Features:

• Includes: Greenhouse, Integrated base, Built-in Water Gutter, Automatic Roof Vent , Hinged Double Doors, Work Bench, Interior Shades, Programmable Watering System and Sink

• Average cost to run 8’ x 8’ greenhouse year round: $100-$150

• Snow load capacity of 24 lbs/ sq ft (1.536 lbs)

• Wind load of 52 m/sec (113 mph gusts)

• 10 year Manufacturer Warranty on frame/Polycarbonate

cover croPs

Why Use Cover Crops?Cover crops, also known as green manures, can make a significant contribution to your organic growing. Benefits provided to the soil, crop and grower include:

• Increased organic matter

• Increased residual nitrogen

• The ability for deep minerals to be brought to the surface for other crops

• Beneficial insect habitat that also provides pollen and nectar

• Improved water, root and air penetration in the soil

• Weed control and soil erosion suppression

• Increased populations of earthworms and beneficial microorganisms

• Reduction of pests

We have partnered with some of the finest seed producers and want you to know that the seeds we are presenting you with are certified organic and non-GMO.

Cover crops can be a vital part of your growing regime. They are sometimes required for organic certification. They make excellent sense when you consider the benefits. Along with improving soil tilth, they are also beautiful to look at! Whether you want to improve your soil by adding a green manure, provide organic matter, provide a bene-ficial insect habitat, prevent weeds, create a barrier habitat, create a bio-oasis, provide relay intercropping, deliver forage for your livestock or are looking for a sustainable crop to grow and sell, cover crops are a great way to go. Not sure what you need? Let one of our specialists help you! There is no charge for our consultation.

Fall & Winter Cover CropsInoculate Your Seeds Inoculate your legume seeds prior to planting. The primary reason for planting legumes (alfalfa, clovers, vetches, peas, beans and

other related plants) is their purpose in fixing nitrogen from the air into the soil in forms that other plants can

use. Legumes are not able to do it singularly. They work in harmony with a group of

root inhabiting bacteria known as rhizobacteria, which process and

convert gaseous nitrogen to plant useable nitrogen. The legumes provide an environment (on their roots) and supplemental food for the bacteria. Although these bacteria do exist in the soil, research

indicates that the amount of bacteria naturally found in most soils is not

sufficient to maximize nitrogen fixation by the legumes. This is why it is important

to inoculate leguminous seeds with the proper bacteria prior to planting. This ensures a

high level of viable bacteria when the seed germinates. Properly inoculated legumes can generate up to 200 lbs. per acre of useable nitrogen. All leguminous cover crop seeds in this catalog must be inoculated.

BeneFicial insects

Assassin Bug - Zelus renardii.

These Generalist Terrestrial Ambush Predators Do A Big Job!

TARGET:Leafhoppers, aphids, early instar caterpillars, flies, and most other pests.

DESCRIPTION:These hardworking ambush predators are an excellent addition to any growing area, large or small. Feasting on a variety of pests, assassin bugs stay put in order to knock out an infestation. With an approximate two-month lifespan, these generalist predators will live, eat and reproduce in the area of release. Zelus start eating immediately after hatching, and by the second instar they produce a resin on their legs, which turns them into a walking sticky trap. Once captured, their prey is pierced with their rostrum and a digestive enzyme is injected into the prey and the insect is quickly killed. This method of predation allows for Zelus to take out prey much larger than themselves. These generalist predators are voracious and can be used efficiently in gardens, fields, orchards and greenhouses.

SUGGESTED USE: (Depending upon level of infestation)Use 500 eggs in a 2,000-3,000 square foot area every 2-3 weeks. Release preventatively or at the first sign of in an infestation. For heavy infestations, release 500-1,000 eggs weekly in no more than 2,000 square feet. Release 5-10 thousand eggs bi weekly per acre. Shipped as eggs, these beneficial insects will typically hatch in under a week. Temperature: 55-110° F Humidity: 10-75%

Spidermite Destroyer Feltiella acarisuga

Use These Predators In Addition To Spider Mite Predators (Predatory Mites) When Spider Mite Populations Are Especially High.

TARGET:Various mites

DESCRIPTION:The entire life cycle is about 15 days. Adults are about 2 mm long, pinkish-brown, and have long legs. They do not prey on spider mites, but drink water and nectar. The female adult gall-midges actively search for spider mite colonies and deposit eggs next to them for about 5 days. Eggs laid are 0.1 x 0.25 mm in size and are shiny and translucent. They hatch in 2 days. The larvae that hatch from the eggs are 0.2- 2 mm in length and are orange-brown. They feed on all stages of the spider mite for 4-6 days, depending on the temperature, humidity, and abundance of spider mites. Larvae pupate inside a white cocoon, usually on the underside of leaves along the veins. It takes 4-6 days to produce an adult.

SUGGESTED USE: (Depending upon level of infestation)For light infestations, introduce 10/1,000 sq. ft or 400/acre every 7 days, for at least 3 weeks.

For heavy infestations, introduce 25/1,000 sq. ft or 1,000/acre every 7 days, for at least 3 weeks.

Tomatoes/cucumber: 1 per plant Greenhouse/tropical/garden crops: 2,000-3000 Bedding: 1,000 per 10,000 sq.ft. Growers: 5,000-20,000 per acre.

Spidermite Destroyer Stethorus punctillumUse These Predators In Addition To Other Spider Mite Predators (Predatory Mites) When Spider Mite Populations Are Especially High.

TARGET:Various mites.

DESCRIPTION:Using smell, this tiny ladybug is an effective locator and as an adult will consume more than 40 mites per day. Females lay up to 15 eggs per day. Development to the adult stage takes around 18 days at a temperature of 70° F and the total lifespan of the predator is about 9 weeks. They are known to survive temperatures over 100° F in field crops.

SUGGESTED USE: (Depending upon level of infestation)Use 100 adults per 300 sq. ft. of infested area. Release adult beetles into mite infested areas and look for signs of reproduction (larvae, pupae, and adults) after four weeks. This predator is more mobile than spider-mite predators (predatory mites) but takes longer to establish, so releases of spider-mite predators should also be made into mite infested areas.

Milky Spore PowderSpecific, Long Lasting Larval Control.

Target: Japanese Beetle Grubs.

Description: Contains Bacillus popillae bacterium, lethal to soil-borne grub stages of Japanese beetles. Grubs that normally feed on roots of grass and vegetables will ingest the bacterium which will cause death in about 1-3 weeks. Grubs decompose and re-release bacteria spores. The spores can remain in the soil for about ten years, and in some cases up to 20 years. In warmer climates, control can occur in 1-3 years (after one application) and in cooler climates, 3-5 years. Can apply with other fertilizers, will not harm animals and can be applied to food crops. For best results, apply with NemaSeek, which will aid in spreading the bacterium to grubs. Store in a cool dry place to maintain shelf life.

Suggested Use: Use All-Purpose Dispenser Tube for easy application. White chalk carries the bacterium, and the resultant treated area should resemble a checkerboard. Water within about 48 hours for about 15-20 minutes to permeate into soil and do not mow or rake until thoroughly soaked.

Apply about 1 tsp., every 4 ft., in rows 4 ft. apart. 10 oz. covers ≈ 2,500 ft², 40 oz. covers ≈ ¼ acre, 50 lbs. covers ≈ 4.5 acres.

Mosquitoes Transmit Disease

Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti)Target: Larval Stages of Mosquitoes & Black Flies.

Description: "Bti", Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, are bacteria which infect and kill mosquito larvae. These bacteria kill only the larvae of mosquitoes and their close relatives like gnats and black flies. Bti does not harm other kinds of larvae, insects, fish, birds, worms or any mammals. When Bti are eaten by the mosquito larvae, they damage the gut cells and quickly paralyze them, leaving them unable to ingest fluids or food.

Suggested Use for Dunks: Dunks kill mosquitoes for up to 30 days when placed in standing water outdoors. Dunks will float in water and can be anchored with string to prevent them from being washed away. Alternate drying and wetting does not reduce their effectiveness. Use 1 dunk/100 sq. ft. of infested water. Dunks can also be placed in low lying areas in advance of expected flooding.

Suggested Use for Bits/Granular: Broadcast into compost piles, water gardens, flower pots, rain barrels, bird baths, tree holes, swamp coolers, unused swimming pools, old automobile tires and other places that have the potential for mosquito breeding. 1 tsp. per 25 sq. ft. or 1 Tbsp. per 75 sq. ft., 2.5-10 lbs/acre depending upon organic properties of water: black, murky water needs more than clear water. Lasts for approximately 2 weeks.

Adult female flies lay their eggs in decaying organic matter, especially manure. Only a few hours later, these eggs develop into microscopic larvae (maggot stage) and burrow down into the manure. The maggots grow until they form a cocoon (pupal stage).

Then, the female Fly Eliminators™ seek out the fly pupae and begin to deposit their eggs inside. The eggs grow into larvae that feed on the developing fly, stopping the adult pest fly from hatching.

Fly Eliminators™ reproduce in about 21 days, constantly strengthening the Fly Eliminator™ population. Pest flies reproduce at a faster rate than our Fly Eliminators, so they must be replenished on a regular basis, approx. 2 – 4 weeks.

Fly Eliminators™ are tiny (approximately 1/8”) beneficial insects that parasitize flies in their developing pupal (cocoon) stage. Scientifically they are referred to as Fly Parasites or Fly Parasitoids.

Adult Fly Eliminator emerging from fly pupa.

Fly Eliminators™ and wood shavings in packaging.

You will receive a plastic bag which contains parasitized fly pupae in wood shavings.

1. When your Fly Eliminators™ arrive, check for any signs of hatching.

2. Once a few have hatched, sprinkle small handfuls around your property into those dirty flies' favorite breeding areas: manure piles; under water troughs; under bedding; corners of pens and feeding sites.

3. Cover with dirt or manure to protect your Fly Eliminators™. They will start to burrow down and search for fly pupae to lay their young in.

4. Repeat every 2-4 weeks.

BalEnce™

An Easy-To-Use Beneficial Insecticidal Spray To Fight Flies!Target: Larval and adult flies.

Description: This EPA approved biological insecticide is suitable for organic programs. Consists of a liquid suspension of beneficial entomopathogenic fungi known as Beauveria bassiana that grow naturally in soils throughout the world. The fungus acts as a parasite on flies, causing white muscardine disease. When the microscopic spores of the fungus come in contact with the body of an adult or larval stage of a fly, they germinate, penetrate the cuticle and grow inside, killing the fly within a matter of days. Soon after, a white mold emerges from the cadaver and produces new spores that continue to infect more flies. After application, adult flies and fly larvae die in 24 to 72 hours. Product will continue to remain viable on residual surface areas for up to about 21 days.

Suggested Use: Apply to animal rearing sites, housing and holding areas and manure piles. The 15 oz. container treats up to about 50,000 ft2. Apply using a backpack sprayer or fogging equipment. Use no more than 60 oz. per building/area per week. For best results, turn fans off or to lowest level in order to ensure maximum surface area coverage. Can be used in colder months to help curtail impending spring fly blooms. Check for evidence of reduced populations of fly pupae in manure and other breeding areas following application 21 to 35 days or up to 90 days in cooler temperatures.

• For livestock areas, apply about 1oz./3,000 ft2 1-4 times a week, for 2-3 weeks depending upon fly population.

• For poultry houses, apply about 7.5 oz./3-4 gals. of water and spray half of mix on manure. Use the remaining half for the rest of house surfaces. For maximum control, treat manure pile up to 4 times a week and remaining house areas 2-3 times a week.

Beneficial NematodesAdd Beneficial Nematodes For Ultimate Fly Control!

Target: Fly maggots and other subterranean pests.

Description: These live microscopic organisms (non-segmented round worms) occur naturally in soil throughout the world and are parasitic to fly maggots and other subterranean pests. Upon application, they will seek out and enter maggots through body openings. Once inside, the nematode releases bacteria which kill the host maggot within 24 - 48 hours. The bacteria create a food source for the nematodes to reproduce. As the food resources within the dead pest become scarce, the nematodes exit and immediately begin searching for a new host.

Suggested Use: Apply nematodes to "hot spot" areas where flies are breeding such as compost and manure piles, around manure and urinating sites, and watering and feeding areas using a watering can, hose end, backpack or pump sprayer or through irrigation or misting systems. Clothes Moth TrapsUses A Natural Pheromone Lure!

Target: Adult male clothes moths.

Description: The Clothes Moth Trap attracts and captures adult male clothes moths. It signals when an infestation is present, but does not control larvae on clothing or personal objects. Female moths are especially attracted to oily or soiled fabrics, where they lay their eggs. The moths avoid light and are therefore difficult to find and identify. The Clothes Moth Trap catches webbing cloths moth during their mating season by using a natural pheromone lure. If moths are found in the trap, take immediate measures to control the larvae. Search out damaged fabrics and destroy, dry clean or freeze them (in a deep freeze for at least 14 days).

Suggested Use: Open box carefully. Remove inner parts. Peel release paper from enclosed sticky pad. Remove lure from foil pouch and place in center of sticky pad. Fold top and bottom flaps inside box. Insert pad as shown on back of package. Place trap where moths occur (bedroom closets). Use tab on side of box to pin trap to a wall at eye level. Replace every 12 weeks, or sooner if full of insects. Use traps all year round.

Revenge Pantry Moth TrapThis Pantry Moth Trap Is Environmentally Sound & Uses Pheromone Lures To Attract The Moths And Trap Them!

Target: Adult moths.

Description: This trap attracts and captures adult flour moths (Indian meal moths, almond moths and raisin moths). These moths are found in flour, rice, crackers, dog food, bird seed and cereal. Trap works by luring male moths into trap with a pheromone (insect hormone) that female moths use to attract males for mating. Reducing the number of male moths reduces egg laying and mating. It is a good idea to keep a few of these traps on hand. Traps work without harmful chemicals!

Suggested Use: Use one or two traps for an average sized room or closet and will last 3 months.

Fall laWn care

Summer is winding down and it’s time to turn our attention to some autumn lawn care. It may seem counter intuitive, but autumn is the best time to prepare for a beautiful spring lawn. Here are some basic steps you can take now that will help you ensure that your lawn will be green and luxurious next spring.Weeds are great indicators of soil health. If you have been plagued by weeds this summer we recommend that you have a soil analysis. The results of the soil analysis will help you make the most effective, efficient and economical decisions for autumn and spring lawn care. Visit www.arbico-organics.com for our selection of soil test kits.

Keep up with maintenance – continue mowing at the normal height and rake leaves off the grass. This is the time of year to dethatch and aerate the soil. This will help to break up the thatch or mats that develop in grasses over time. De-thatching and aerating help open up space for the grass to breathe and for adding soil amendments that improve the quality of the soil. De-thatching can be done with a hard rake. If you prefer a simpler method, we have a terrific product called Nitron's Thatch Away that uses the power of beneficial micro-organisms to promote the breakdown of built-up grass and clippings so they can be turned into valuable nutrients.

Once you have de-thatched and aerated, add compost and earthworm castings to the aeration holes and bald spots. Once the lawn is levelled, add a layer of Ringer® 0% Phosphate Lawn Restore® Fertilizer. This combination will help rejuvenate soil that is tired from the hard work of summer growing.

If you have experienced issues with grubs or moles during the summer, apply beneficial nematodes (see page 20-21) now to avoid problems in the spring. Grubs are doubly problematic. Grubs love the roots of grass and can cause large brown, dead spots to develop in the lawn. Second, moles love grubs and having grubs attracts moles into your soil where they further damage the grass. Controlling the grubs will help alleviate the moles. If your grubs are larvae of the Japanese Beetle, consider applying Milky Spore (see page 19) before you apply the nematodes to begin inoculating your soil against this invasive species.

If you are living in an area where you can over seed with a winter lawn, all of these steps apply and are best done before you over seed for winter growth. These few, very simple steps will help you ensure a great lawn next spring!

Neptune’s Harvest Turf Formula Fertilizer 2-0-2Is Your Lawn Lacking Luster? It will improve root density and plant color by providing important macro and micro-nutrients. Suggested Use: For outdoor use, shake well before application. For lawns and reseeding, use about 1 pint/1,000 ft². For flowers, vegetables, trees and shrubs use about 1 oz./1 gal. water and water as normal. (Always dilute at a ratio 1:10.) Suggested Use: A 25 lb. bag covers ≈2,500 ft². Apply at a rate of 10lbs. /1000 ft². Use a drop or rotary spreader, water-ing after application and keeping moist for 3-4 days or until new sod/seedlings are established.
