  • 3NA, NC & ND countryside managementstudents recently started a series of visits forthe Coastal Management Unit. The first site atWalton on the Naze Essex, is arguably one ofmost important sites in the UK in terms ofgeology, erosion, geomorphology. The base ofthe cliffs is made up of Eocene Clay up to 55million years old. When these were laid downthe UK was further south and much warmerwith tropical seas, Sharks and Sequoias. Ontop of this is the Red Crag deposits which areup to 3 million years old; here the UK wascooler the fossils are made up mainly of shellsand lay in an oxidised bed. This site isimportant for the countrysiders for severalreasons as it visibly demonstrates keyprocesses such as:

Slumping or Rotational Slip where waterpercolates down through the crag and onto theEocene clay as this is porous but impermeable thecrag simply slips off and onto the foreshore.

Flanking & Scouring where water gets behind

hard wall defences and causes damage. Theseprocesses are accentuated by isostatic recovery fromthe last ice age Essex is sinking whilst sea level isrising.

On a conservation level the cliffs are a geologicalSSSi site due to the beds and fossils present. Thecliff erosion is encroaching on a 18C look out towerof local historical importance. For some this isimportant in terms of loss of cultural assets in theabsence of no further protection. From a defenceviewpoint we could ask how much would it cost todefend such areas. At sites like Walton thegeomorphological processes occurring may meanthat the coast is simply too costly and too complex toprevent from eroding.

Our picture below shows the plight of the WWIIbunkers these were not so long ago on the cliff top!We wonder what the cliffs would have looked like inthe 18C when the tower was built? Moreover, wherewill this part of the coast end up?Andy CopseyLecturer in Countryside

Coastal Management UnitTreemendouslandingOver 1,500 young elmtrees recently landed atGatwick Airport, manyfor immediate despatchacross the UK.

The trees were shipped infrom the USA by Dorset-based Knoll Gardens aspart of the nurseryscampaign to restore the elmacross the British Isles.

Millions of English elmshave been lost to theravages of Dutch ElmDisease since the 1970s andKnolls owner, Neil Lucas ishoping that these diseasetolerant Princeton Elms(Ulmus americanaPrinceton), will play a partin restoring some of thislost heritage.

We have to accept thatwe will never replace themillions of elms we havealready lost, said Neil. But these Princeton Elmswill help us make a start, and Ive been delighted bythe orders we have alreadyreceived.

The Prince of Wales hasalready taken delivery ofover 60 Princeton Elms fora new avenue at HighgroveHouse, and our latest orderhas just been despatched toRugby School for plantingin the very close whereWilliam Webb Ellis firstinvented the game of rugbyfootball.

At Rugby, as on theHighgrove Estate, manyelms were lost and theseplantings are typical of anationwide desire to bothreclaim our heritage andrestore the Elm throughoutthe British Isles.

A mature Princeton Elm,though with larger leavesthan the classic Englishelm, has a beautiful outlinethat lends itself to useeither as a single specimentree or as an avenue.Princeton has also beenproved to be incrediblydisease tolerant. Eighty-year-old Princeton Elmscreate magnificent avenuesin the USA and remain inperfect condition to this day.It is this combination ofdisease tolerance andproven longevity that makethe Princeton Elm unique.

The recently arrivedcontainer-grown whips areavailable only from KnollGardens. Despatched withfull planting and growinginstructions, they cost just35 for a 3ft tree. As theygrow up to 6 foot each yearIt is easy to see just howquickly they are able tomake their mark on thelandscape and replace littleof our lost heritage as theygrow.

You can now orderPrinceton Elms online atwww.knollgardens.co.uk, orcall Knoll Gardens direct on01202 873931.

CONFERENCEThursday 22nd May 2008 at The Town Hall, Reading RG1 1QHThe bark of a tree can be damaged by people and their machines, animals ornatural events. Sometimes this is done deliberately to coerce the tree into aparticular growth pattern, or to limit its life. More often the damage is notwelcome, and the subsequent effects on the tree have to be managed.

Those responsible for trees should be equipped to: identify real threats to trees; protecttrees from damage; seek to treat the cause(s) of the damage; repair the damaged tree.

This was described in the Tree Advice Trusts Arboricultural Practice Note Girdling,Constriction and Ring Barking (APN 13 Published in February 2008).

This conference will expand on the newly published guidance and should be of particularinterest to: local authority tree officers; estate managers; tree wardens; landscapecontractors; arboricultural consultants.

For further information and a booking form, please contact: Tree Advice Trust, Alice Holt Lodge, Wrecclesham, Farnham, Surrey GU10 4LH Telephone: 01420 22022 Email [email protected].

THE SAWPODThe unique pruning saw holderis revolutionising the way treesurgeons are attaching theirpruning saws! The harness hadbeen the popular place to fixscabbards containing hand sawsbut now there is another way:...the Sawpod pruning sawholder.

The list of stockists is growing andincludes major arb kit suppliersthroughout the UK, Europe and theUSA. Come and see why it will makeyour life in the tree easier. Stockistsinclude Treeworker, Honey Bros,Stanton Hope, FR Jones, Buxtons...and most of the tree surgery dealers!

New concept harness designed for ArboristsTreeFlex has been designed as a custom harness for the specific needs oftoday's modern arborist. The combined efforts of experienced arborists, safety technologists and remedial personal trainers within the TreeFlexteam, ensure that your future health and safety is our top priority.

Because arborists have to sit, stand, twist and lean in a harness more than anyother work at height, we believe that harnesses (and many other tools) currently onthe market are not fulfilling the requirements of ergonomic activity in trees as wellas they could be.

The TreeFlex harness is designed to support the climber in an efficient seated, twisted and standing position, without the typical muscular/skeletal restrictions thatsome harnesses impose. Flexibility and strength have been incorporated into aversatile design, to help ensure that your daily work station is as ergonomic and safeas practicable, in a lightweight, durable and unrestrictive design.

Two plaques were also unveiled tomark previous trees planted by theSociety in 1932 and 1982.

In 1905 its name changed to the RoyalForestry Society thanks to the patronageof Edward VII. The royal connection hascontinued ever since, with the Prince ofWales serving as president from198284 and the Queen being thecurrent patron.

National Certificate student Richard Noakesis pictured retrieving a large section from atree he was pruning at Capels Forty Hall

Farm Conservation Wood. Richard hadpreviously studied for his First Diploma at thecollege.

The apprenticeship programmeincludes several elements, whichunfortunately for the students doesnot just include climbing andchainsaw operations! So this firstterm has been a mixture of practicaland classroom based activities. Thestudents have successfully passedtheir Application of Number andCommunication exams and havealso passed their Emergency FirstAid. Whilst all this is a requirementof the course it has meant that onlyhalf of the time has been dedicatedto arboriculture training. Despitethis a lot has been achieved and thestudents already feel that they havelearnt new skills.

All apprentices have been taughtthe basics of tree climbing and havebeen involved in aerial rescue

operations. A climbing competitionhas been organised and no doubtthe times will improve significantlyas the course progresses! Theattainment of CS30 and 31 is animportant part of the course andSam Jones, the course tutor, hasalready started teaching this. It hasbeen important to retain theinterest of the apprentices whilstthey have had to concentrate onother aspects of the course. However it is important that wealso give them some skills early inthe course that they can thendevelop in the workplace. Thefeedback from the students so farhas been excellent.
