Nightwalk, 11th September N Devon Hospice has been blown away with your support of Nightwalk 2021 and are delighted to announce that this event is now SOLD OUT! Your continued support will make a very real dif-ference to patients and families. On behalf of everyone we have the privilege of caring for, thank you, it really does mean the world.

Patient & visitor parking at RD&E Wonford The public ‘pay and display’ car parks at the Roy-al Devon and Exeter Hospital at Wonford have changed to a pay-on-exit system, meaning users only pay for the time they are actually using the car park. The new system uses Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), which will capture vehicle registrations on entry. Users simply enter their registration at the car park terminal when they return to their cars, and pay for the time used. Payment can be made with cash, card or contact-less, or via mobile phone app. Please note the payment machines do not give change. Car registrations are recorded only for the pur-poses of car park charging, and are in compliance with Data Protection laws.

Mission: Unbreakable North Devon goes commando in this tough as-sault course challenge on Sunday, October 10th at N Molton Sports Centre, EX36 3HG. Book now and start to raise vital funds for your frontline Hospice nurses. A commando course filled with real challenges. Tackle mud, fire, water, ice and obstacles to call yourself an 'Unbreakable.' Mission: Unbreakable redefines the traditional 'mud run' obstacle course, because our course has been designed with 2 4 Commando Royal Engineer Regiment based at RMB Chivenor, who will also be there on the day, providing plenty of encouragement. For safety reasons, we can only release 500 places for this year's event, so we will need each and every person who is lucky enough to secure a place to raise over £50 for our Hospice nurses. Thanks to the fantastic North Molton Sports Cen-tre and local landowners, Mission:Unbreakable takes place on a specially designed 10km course through fields, rivers and forests. The terrain is rugged with plenty of hills and mud to make it even tougher.

Exmoor Society Pinnacle Award An award of £5,000 is available to devel-op an idea, project or business proposal by individuals or groups aged between 18 and 27 who live, work or study in the Greater Exmoor area. The Award was set up in 2011 by The Exmoor Society for young entrepre-neurs who wish to live and work on Exmoor. As a conservation body, we fully recognise the im-portance of providing opportunities for young people to remain on the moor when they enter the world of work. We want to show that beautiful landscapes and livelihoods can go together to keep the very essence of Exmoor alive.

N Devon Council is looking for landlords Our Housing Service works with customers at risk of/are homeless, who are looking for long term rented accommodation in N Devon. They range from a single applicants to family units. We may support them with payment of rent in advance and deposit, which is paid direct to the landlord. We will also support tenancy set up if the customer requires this. We are also there to advise and support landlords we are working with in relation to tenancy rights etc. If you are a land-lord, or thinking of becoming one, please contact our Private Rented Sector Team, 01271 388420 who will be happy to discuss further with you.

Work underway on A377 at Kingford The River Taw, which runs alongside the A377 south of Umberleigh, has eroded the embank-ment which supports the highway with around 40 metres of the south bound lane suffering crack-ing. This is being repaired with piling work, with temporary traffic lights in place from 29th July for around 13 weeks. Brief road closures may be needed but these will be kept to a minimum; dates will be displayed in advance. Large natural stone will also be placed at the toe of the em-bankment in the river next summer to prevent the road being undermined in future. A further road closure will be needed in November to complete the work.

Demonstrate COVID-19 vaccination status More than 10 million people are now using the free NHS app. Have you downloaded it yet? It's not the same as the NHS Test and Trace app. This one was launched before the pandemic in 2019 to give people a simple and secure way to access a range of NHS services on their smart-phone or tablet - for example booking and man-aging appointments at their GP surgery, ordering repeat prescriptions and searching trusted infor-mation on hundreds of conditions and treatments. And now you can also view and share your COVID Pass via the app to show your proof of vaccination, which will help you to travel abroad and start returning to workplaces. The government will also work with organisations that operate large, crowded settings including nightclubs, to use the NHS COVID Pass as a condition of entry. Please visit the NHS website to find out more about the app and download it.

Are you a landowner? Do you own a children’s play area, sports pitch, or public cemetery? Would you like Public Space Protection Order controls to be enforceable on your land? Bagging the dog mess is only half the job One bug bear of many in our District is the habit of a minority of dog owners who insist on bagging up their dog's mess, only to hang it from a tree or leave it on a verge to 'pick up later'. Bagging up a dog's mess is only half the job and leaving it any-where other than inside a bin is littering. That in-cludes leaving bags on top of or near a bin - or where a bin used to be! Please take filled bags with you until you find a bin to put it in. If a bin is full, please let us know about it by emailing [email protected] or phone 01271 327711, providing the specific number of the bin if possible. You can use the mapping tool on our website to locate dog bins, listed under 'local facilities'.

Advice on rodents North Devon Council is often approached by resi-dents asking for help with a rodent problem. We do not provide a pest control service so it is down to the customer to find a reputable contractor - make sure you pick one from the Trading Stand-ards Directory of Approved Businesses. The fol-lowing advice can help with deterring rodents: If feeding birds keep the ground free of spilled food; sweep up daily or use rodent proof bird feeders (rats will climb the feeder pole and bushes). Do no throw feed on the ground If keeping chickens or rabbits, do not put out excess food and clear up before dark. Ensure all food is stored in sealed metal containers or securely locked away. If composting, use a container with a closely fitting lid. You can also use a kerbside caddy for recycling food waste, which is collected along with your weekly recycling. Remove all other possible food sources includ-ing fallen fruit. Keep your domestic waste in a bin with a close-ly fitting lid or in bags in a secure place. If you have a dog or cat don’t feed it outdoors – you may also be feeding the local rats! Do not leave standing water at ground level or within reach of rats. Keep your garden and yards clear of litter and rubbish. Clear any undergrowth that may be providing harbourage for rats.

New Charities Bill Factsheet The government has recently produced a new Charities Bill Factsheet. The Bill implements rec-ommendations from the Law Commission’s 2017 Technical Issues in Charity Law Report and will simplify a number of processes to help charities consolidate and restructure, for example by mak-ing it easier for charities to amend governing doc-uments, dispose of land or carry out mergers.

Think 111 first and get the right treatment The NHS reminds people how to access health services and get the care they need. For urgent advice ‘Think 111 First’ and contact NHS 111 from anywhere, either by phone or online, any time of day or night. If you need fur-ther care or medication, NHS 111 advisors will direct you to the most appropriate service. Local pharmacies can provide expert advice and a fast route to medication for minor ailments like aches and pains, colds, earache and skin rashes. They are open until late and at weekends with no need for an appointment. Visit the NHS website to find your nearest pharmacy and opening times. The HANDi app has been developed by paediat-ric consultants to give parents more confidence in dealing with minor conditions at home and help reduce the number of children and young people who visit A&E, but do not need treatment. It pro-vides advice for common childhood conditions and how to treat them plus information about when and how to ask for help. It's free to down-load to your phone or tablet, just visit the NHS Devon Clinical Commissioning Group website. Please only call 999 in a genuine, life-threatening emergency, for example; Chest pain / breathing difficulties / heart attack: Stroke: Severe bleeding: Severe allergic reactions: Severe burns or scalds: Serious head injuries: Major trauma such as a road traffic accident or a fall from height. Please do not ring back to ask for an estimated arrival time; only call back if the patient’s condi-tion worsens - or they no longer need an ambulance.
