Applicants may also have been selected to represent New Zealand offshore eg Endurance.Fully complete the application form (available to download off NZAHBS website) and attach a

written summary of the applicant’s involvement and achievements with the Arabian breed.

WAHO AwardWritten nominations only must be supported by a summary qualifying the nomination.

The horse must be Purebred & registered with the NZAHBS.The horse must be bred & domiciled in New Zealand.

The horse must be alive at the time of nomination. Nominees should be Arabian horses that have, in some way, been an excellent “ambassador” for

the breed, or in the case of older horses, achieved the same through immediate progeny. Nominations should be for all disciplines and are not limited to halter horses only.

Hello to our Members and Arabian enthusiasts

We are thrilled to be able to send to you another printed version of the Arabianz.

This December issue has been very kindly printed for us by our member Angela O’Connor of Desert Star Arabians. Angela is a Sales Executive for Fuji Xerox Christchurch and we are extremely appreciative of Angela and Fuji’s generosity and time. If you require any printing please have Fuji at the top of your list.

Council has also been incredibly appreciative of the generous offer from David Steward of donated semen from the imported stallion, Jacob JCA (US) to be auctioned by NZAHBS at some time in the future.

These two very kind offers just prove to me that we have a supportive Arabian community out there and if we all pitch in and contribute in some way the path forward for the Arabian Horse in New Zealand will be that much smoother.

Please put the 16 & 17 May in your diary now for the 2015 AGM as I know we will have a great weekend in Taranaki!

As a Council we are looking forward to presenting a Year Book to our members, after our AGM 2015 and to finalising details for the Judging Seminars.

Annual General Meeting 2015 The 2015 AGM will be hosted by the Taranaki Arabian Horse Club over the weekend of 16 & 17 May 2015 in and around the New Plymouth area. Full details and a booking sheet will be sent to members with the December mailout.

Annual AwardsNominations/applications for the Annual Awards to be presented at the 2015 AGM close on 31 January 2015 (refer to page 2 for further details). The NZAHBS Office automatically collates points for the NZ Breeder, NZ Endurance Breeder and Purebred Roll of Merit Awards from the results supplied for the North and South Island Championships, Nationals and other approved events.

Artificial Insemination (AI) PermitsThe following changes have been made to AI Permit requirements (updated forms will be available soon):

• AI Permits for mares and stallions that are both resident and registered in New Zealand will no longer be required. They will be treated the same way as if by natural service, ie the insemination date will be recorded on the form and the stallion owner will provide a signed service certificate to the mare owner.

• AI Permits will only be required if semen is being imported from a stallion registered and resident in another WAHO registry country to be used with a NZ registered mare.

• The annual Stallion Return will be updated and include space to record number of straws of semen stored.

Next Meeting The next meeting will be held in March 2015 in Christchurch. If you wish to have any matters raised at this meeting, please ensure that they are submitted to the office by the end of February.

YOUTH PROFILEDanielle Chambers

Dani Chambers and Rosewood Zakee are a combination new to the Arabian ring.

Dani is 13 years old, has been riding on and off since she was four, but seriously since she was nine. From nine to thirteen she was on a variety of lease ponies as good ponies are expensive to buy (for those who don’t know $5000 gets you a very average pony) and with an anti-equine father there was no other way for her to ride. So she was trained on a series of ponies with problems ranging from the Welsh pony who wasn’t really suitable for first ridden (he taught Dani to steer and sit out bucking) to a Welsh/Riding pony with very little experience (he taught Dani to steer better, sit out bigger bucks, how to get left lead canter in a pony that only does right lead and how to get back up off the ground and back on the pony), a Connemara (how to hang onto a very strong pony, how to train a jumping pony to do dressage and how to bounce off jumps and get back on the pony) and a Riding Pony/Trakehner (how to sit a bolt, how to teach a pony to jump and how to slow a very forward moving pony down for dressage). All of which has resulted in a 13 year old girl with far more skills than most children who have ready-made ponies bought for them.

While all this was happening Zakee was sitting in the paddock at home, a non-descript little grey gelding by Redwood Lodge Calais from Zelina. Zakee was Zelina’s last foal as cancer caught up with her a year later. As Dani got taller I decided to start two geldings under saddle with the idea that the easier of the two could be her next pony after the Trakehner cross. Zakee definitely fitted the bill, in spite of minimal handling as he was growing, he took to everything in a very sensible, calm fashion. I got him to the point where both Dani and I were riding him round the yard, and then sent him to Jeff Hill to finish, as I kept running out of time to work him and wanted to be able to just jump on and go.

Jeff did a beautiful job, and Zakee has never looked back. Within 6 months I had taken him to his first dressage competition where he placed 5th in his first test and Dani had taken him to Roydvale PC jumping day where he placed 4th overall and 1st for style in a class of 45 entries. That was just the start.

Their first show was the 2014 Nationals (nothing like starting in the deep end!) where they took out the Hi Point Youth award over older competitors (Dani was 12 and Zakee 5). However showing is not Dani’s main focus, apart from doing Arabian sections/shows that have costume classes, something she absolutely loves. They gave a spectacular demonstration of a sliding halt from a gallop in the costume class at Canterbury show recently, unfortunately the halt was a little too enthusiastic and Zakee ended up sitting on the ground as Dani rolled off his quarters! Neither was hurt, it just took a while to get the grass stains off Zakee before the ridden turnout.

Dani took over riding Zakee full time 3 months ago, and since then they have been out most weekends to either a competition or pony club. Dani has continued with dressage, competing in unregistered classes at present (I have promised her she can register with ESNZ in the new year as she wants to compete in the jumping) usually placing and often winning, all the more impressive when you realise they are usually competing against adults. They have just started level two tests and are enjoying the challenge. More than anything Dani loves to jump, and they are now show-jumping at 85cm with regular wins and placings. Eventing is where Dani really does well, as the dressage training puts her in good stead. Dani and Zakee have done one so far, View Hill - the last for Canterbury until next season; competing at 65cm, they won the dressage, had a beautiful clear showjumping round and apart from a slight reluctance on the part of the Arabian to go into the very muddy water hole (could have been anything lurking in it!) resulting in 18 time faults, they would have got round the cross country except for a minor technicality of Dani missing a jump resulting in their elimination. Now she can’t wait for the next ODE, I don’t think she’ll make that mistake again!

Over Labour weekend the pair of them showed just how versatile the Arabian can be. On the Friday they were show-jumping at the Rangiora A&P (5th both classes), on Saturday they were showing in the Arabian section, including costume – a first for both, and a costume demonstration in the main arena after the class (they both had grins on after galloping around for 10 minutes), and on the Monday was the ODE. Zakee may be just a little grey gelding, but in the time Dani has been riding him they have done more for

the Arabian breed than probably all last years’ National champions put together. The children at Okuku PC love him, especially the wee girl who got to ride him after she fell off her pony and hurt her foot; dressage judges like him – Soo Wells (grand prix dressage rider) thinks he has real potential as a dressage pony, Dani’s jumping instructor Tracey Kovacs thinks he’s a dude, and I have had people approach me at jumping competitions with the view to using an Arabian stallion because they like the way he jumps.

These two have only just started together, by the time you read this they will have competed at Courtenay A&P (another costume class), jumped for their pony club as part of the Windsor Trophy team (85cm 16 & under), trialled for the Canterbury Pony Club’s dressage team to contest the National dressage title (I’ll let you know if she gets in), and probably at least another 1 or 2 jumping/dressage days as well. Next year her focus will be on eventing at 80-95 cm as she REALLY wants to be part of Okuku’s Springston Trophy team. Dani says Zakee has ruined her for riding any other breed now, and she fast-talked/nagged and bullied me until I bred two of my mares (Naahrah by Naaddel and Rhiannon by Kandahar Ibn Kazra) to my young stallion Al Farid (River Oak Colorado from an Arabian Park Tycoon mare) this season. Ollie hasn’t been bred from before, so it will be very exciting to see the babies, especially as Zakee was the last foal I bred. Dani gets to choose which one she wants (assuming we get two of course, and that they will be tall enough for her) and is looking forward to having her own baby to handle right from the beginning. But in the meantime, watch out for a tall blonde teen on a chunky fleabitten pony, they intend to go places.

Anazeh Arabians Things are starting to look up at Anazeh Arabians following a saga of heartbreak and disappointments which started with the early death of my beloved Soolai’mon (AU) last year. I found him dead in the paddock and it just broke my heart to lose him. Things were made even worse when I found that Redwood Lodge Estonia (AU) was not in foal to him and neither was Anazeh’s Aziza al Sadat, so not only had I lost my stallion but both mares bred to him were empty. I then decided to sell Estonia on, as the very reason for her purchase, to intensify the Crabbet Silver family lines, had been stolen away. I was also gutted that Aziza was empty as she has developed a large melanoma which may affect her ability to foal in the future. So, all my breeding plans were certainly thwarted there.

I then concentrated on preparing Aziza for the CAHC Arabian Show and Anazeh’s Indian Silver for the Nationals last year but India remained footsore after a trim and Aziza, ever the laid-back and calm girl, totally horrified me by going over the front bar in the float and gashing her head open. So that thwarted my showing plans. Thankfully Aziza’s face has healed up without a scar, thanks to some skilful stitching by my vet.

Then it was winter and it rained buckets and we all stood about in the mud. Thoughts of moving to Florida and breeding goldfish instead entered my head ... But things are looking up now, and I have spent some enjoyable days searching out a new stallion for India who will be going to stud shortly. I like foals to be born around December so they miss out on the thunderstorms. I may, depending on her growth spurts, look at showing Soolai’mon’s daughter Anazeh’s Radiant Silver (thankfully he left me one foal). At not quite 3 years, she is currently 15.1 behind and 15 hands in front with big

gaps in her knees still and already I cannot see over the top of her. She is going to be very tall and her extended trot leaves me quite speechless.

In the interim, in between judging appointments, I am enjoying hacking out on Gloria and have even brought 25 year old Dora back into riding fitness which she is obviously enjoying. We generally cover between 15 and 30km on a hack – some magnificent riding country round here with the Rakaia River, the tracks along the shore and round Lake Ellesmere, who could ask for more. Well, maybe some hillwork would be good ...!

Arapito StudIt has been a successful start to the season for Arapito Stud. Woodlands Shamahl has competed in the Arabian classes at Waikato A&P Show where he received Reserve Champion gelding in-hand and Reserve Champion Purebred under saddle. At the Waihi A & P Show he won Supreme Purebred Arabian in-hand. After 2 years out of work, Shamahl is loving being back in the show ring.

Woodlands Natasha is living in Northland with the Moselen family. Bailee Moselen is doing exceptionally well on Natasha and the pair have picked up a couple of championships already this year and have only been to a handful of shows. Natasha has been an exceptional mare. Bred by my mother, Julia Nash, I took her to our first show when she was a 3 year old. Natasha took me up the levels in pony club, training level eventing and to level four at the New Zealand Dressage Championship. With Bailee, Natasha has found a new lease on life at the age of 21.

I am now competing one of Natasha’s 5 year old daughters, Woodlands Nadiah (Woodlands Natasha x Denali (German Warmblood pony)). Nadiah is very much like Natasha and I often have to look twice when I see her out in the paddock. Nadiah is following in Natasha’s footsteps and we will be attending North Island Dressage Championships in the last week of November.

Candy Lodge Well no foals this year, but our Thoroughbred float of 22 years has had a total rebuild with only the floor being part of the original structure. It was a massive job, but will now last a lifetime, so thanks to my husband for his hours of work and toil.

Unfortunately, due to minor ailments, our show season has had to be significantly reduced. We anticipated taking our two palomino National Show Horses to Cambridge for training in November with the hope of them going to the Auckland

Spectacular and then the All Breeds show. However, things are looking up and training will resume with both horses entered in the National Golden Horse Show in mid-January, followed by the Arabian Nationals at Karaka in March. Something to look forward to and it was great that Angela Rogers was so understanding of our dilemma. Our one and only broodmare – Marhaba Melika returned and was served by the beautiful palomino American Saddlebred “Rebel’s El Dorado” for another palomino National Show foal to arrive in October 2015. This is a phenomenal breed.

Riding Candy (Purebred Arab) and Shalimar (Quarab) has been limited of late without transportation, but we are fortunate enough to have many farms to travel across in the local area with all the farmers being friendly and courteous. Riding on horseback is a great way to identify any water problems, which the farmers appreciate being advised. Only one electric shock off a gate, but luckily that was when I was walking the dogs and not riding or dismounting from my horse! Some say that electric shocks extend life, but I am not so sure… I did manage to borrow my friend’s float a few weeks back and we took the horses to the beach for a great ride with Candy flaunting her extended trot to the max. The sand was fairly soft, so we generally follow the tracks of bikes to allay any fears of sinking sand. The river crossings are always new and varied with storms and tides changing the river course, but after a bit of persuasion the horses manage to get their hooves wet.

I am once again busy organising the 109th Te Puke A&P Show and although there are no Arabian sections, it is a great opportunity to bring your young equines along for the Led Sport Horse section or to ride in the Park Hack rings. This is always a good opportunity to display the versatility of the beautiful breed and show the public the superb temperament and agility of the Arabian horse. I hope everyone has had a successful breeding and foaling season and wish you well for the festive activities and an exciting year ahead.

Classic Arabians Earlier this year Classic Arabians ventured back into the show ring for the first time in some years. We attended the Canterbury All Arabian Show and the NZ Nationals. Our beautiful mare CA Mohena Bint Espano, being by Espano Estopa (World Champion Colt) and out of the spectacular mare Bint Mohena (Imp Germ/Aust). ‘Coco’ as she was known to us, was just beautiful. One of the glorious mares you can only dream about. She was pure white and was without doubt my best friend. She would have happily lived with us in our tent, if we were living in the desert and we would have happily had her live with us. She was truly a member of our family. Coco won 2014 Champion Mare and Supreme Champion Purebred Arabian at the Canterbury All Arabian show which was the most fitting tribute to this incredible horse.

On the 26th May we came home from work to find her dead in the paddock. It was one of those times when you simply cannot believe it is real. We had only bred her once for a lovely gelding by Redwood Lodge Calais (AU). We very much regretted not having bred her more, but at the time I was having so much fun riding her bareback and bridleless and she had also become my son Jamie’s, favourite horse. Jamie was not big into the horses, but it was not uncommon to look out the window and see him lying on top of her with not a thing on her. No halter, no nothing she would just happily continue grazing in the paddock while he was draped all over her. It transpired that Coco had growths on the inside that we could never have known about. The vets have no idea why, just one of those things that sometimes claims our loved ones way too soon. This event caused us to think long and hard about what we wanted to do with the horses. Funny how birth and death does that. With spending so much time in recent years travelling around the world to get my Parelli Natural Horsemanship Instructor qualifications, I had not really concentrated on the Arabians at all. I was really just enjoying the few we still had being CA Mohena Bint Espano up until she died, CA Nazika Bint Mohena (Redwood Lodge Calais x Bint Mohena) and JA Gai Kascade who is retired

after a very long and successful endurance and show career. We also have a TB gelding and a Warmblood mare. I love all horses, no question about it, but the Arabians will always hold a special place in my heart. I believe (and I am not at all bias…) they are the easiest to train (and man have I trained some horses), the most bonding and as we all know, the most beautiful.

After much thought we decided we would breed Nazika again (Coco’s ½ sister) and maybe get another couple of Arabians to breed and ride. So this past season Nazika has been bred to Shaheen Al Saba (AU). We love Thaqib and his progeny and thought Shaheen would cross beautifully with Nazika. When we went to drop Nazika off, Demelza Hoogeveen, Shaheen’s owner, showed us the other horses she had there, including her two lovely yearling fillies by Shaheen. One out the mare CA Melika Silver Fire (a mare we had previously sold to Demelza) and the other out of SS Shula. We loved both the fillies. We ended up purchasing Sharifa DH (below) the filly out of SS Shula. We think she is stunning and she just loves people. I think if she had a choice she would simply move into the house with us. Everyone who meets her loves her. We recently had a public event at our property to open our new all-weather dressage arena and facilities and Sharifa wanted to meet everyone. She spent the entire time leaning over the gate wanting everyone to pat her. We look forward to showing her and later on riding her. We look forward to the future with our Arabians.

Our yearling filly Fiera DH (Shaheen Al Saba (AU) x CA Melika Silver Fire (IIU)) attended the Northern (Rangiora) A&P show and won Champion Arabian. She is now on her way to Angela Rogers of Total Show Training to compete in the big North Island shows.

Our other Shaheen Al Saba daughter, Sharifa DH (x SS Shula) was purchased by Sandy Stanway and Tony Aitkin of Classic Arabians. We never intended to sell Sharifa but in this case the opportunities she will have with Sandy and Tony made the decision easier. We are thrilled that they have seen the potential in Shaheen and his progeny.

We have seen the arrival of two filly foals; the first out of SS Shula and by CRA Sihr Shahrif (US), a stunning chestnut bred and owned in partnership with Carmen Tuite/Talitha Arabians. A big thank you to Jan and Ray Wilson who donated the CRA Sihr Shahrif service to a charity auction a couple of years ago; Carmen won the auction and this filly is the long-awaited (and made to order!) result. The second filly foal is by Shaheen Al Saba out of Euralea Fire N Desire, bred and owned in partnership with Lee Cox/Euralea Arabians. She is an exquisite grey full sister to the much admired gelding Destino DH, proving that this is an exceptional cross.

Desert Star ArabiansAs most of you are aware we lost our foundation stallion back in 2012, just over two years to the day.

Simeon Shaanan (AU) (Asfour x Ramses Malaka) was line bred to Nazeer and a true representative of his desert heritage. With the loss of Shaanan we are now only standing three stallions, but with one less it does make moving horses between paddocks a bit easier!

We are lucky to still have five of Shaanan’s daughters and three sons (one stallion and two geldings). All his shown progeny have either been champion or reserve champion. Desert Star’s Glitter has had the most success with multiple champion and supreme champion titles.

We have not bred for the past few years and our youngest foals are now rising three. While we haven’t made concerted attempts at moving stock, breeding is on hold until we do. We have broken-in and young stock for sale.

I have become involved in Pony Club again after many years and am currently the North Canterbury Head Coach. It’s been great for me to see how many Arabians and Derivatives are competing in Pony Club and I enjoy promoting the breed in new circles.

Holly Farm “Facebook” seems to pick up the daily here and now, news among friends and family. But this publication needs to be supported as it is a very relevant reference. I often refer to back issues, even more so, the printed ones. We really need to keep it up, they only become more valued and treasured as time goes by. As we head towards the end of this year “Holly Farm” is just a little excited about the arrival of foals conceived late due to clearance of ownership of Chaswyck Al Zayd (AU) and the beginning of this new era… roll on 2015 which will be celebrations of dreams and efforts, being fulfilled and creating opportunities to share and ensure the Arabian horse returns to its rightful place. A place I call home. Who will be foaling first…? I suspect I could be surprised but cannot wait for the result of the breeding of “Zayd” to Simeon Shakova (Prince Fa Moniet x Simeon Sukari). Or it could be her blood sister Simeon Shafan (Prince Fa Moniet x Simeon Simona) who has made her way over from Australia carrying a treasured opportunity, a foal by the Qatari leased stallion Jadaan Al Shaqab. These two mares are the only “Prince Fa Moniet” Straight Egyptian daughters in the Southern Hemisphere, his last born due to his untimely loss and therefore the youngest in the World. These two mares are the cornerstones, the very foundations of the “Al Badi Straight Egyptian” breeding program at “Holly Farm”. Never one to turn down a friend’s request. I want to thank Mark Milmine for including “Holly Farm” in the management, promotion and the standing at stud of his stunning

stallion DTA Sanadik’s Sensation (IIU) (Sanadik Ibn Estopa x Halimas Princess Annamotion). Only 3 years old but already 2014 Champion Stallion and Supreme Purebred Arabian. He is serving mares and being set towards starting under saddle by next winter. I am so looking forward to riding this horse and can imagine the quality he will pass on to his much anticipated babies.

Having purchased “Sensation’s” mother earlier in the year will make for a healthy challenge for “Holly Farm”. Buying a proven broodmare who has bred so well begs the question if she will breed as well to a new sire. "Princess" has been covered by “Zayd” and looks to have settled in foal. Also of late have been the finalisation of the purchase of MW Tosca (DE) (Kubenic x Nemara), what a powerhouse of mare and breeding, Straight Russian bloodlines here in New Zealand. I am so excited about this addition to “Holly Farm”, to be able to further infuse the proven racing, athletic substance of the Russian State Stud can only benefit the generations ahead. Next year, 2015 is going to be full of celebrations, how this will happen still needs to be confirmed but be sure to be invited. Casual visits are again returning and with a little prior arrangement everyone is welcome. As we all head towards Summer holidays, school break etc… consider a visit to “Holly Farm” see the babies and program which I believe may be well established but is about to enter a whole new level of wonderful.

Kashami StudWe are a new Stud having joined the Society about two years ago when we just owned the gelding Helderberg Kalahari Sunrise.

Now, between my husband Tony and myself we own the mares Bint Shahdira (AU), Bint Bint Maysama (AU), PKA Shoshahnna and lease Rayjan Salique and Dell Talia who is retired from breeding but is a great riding horse for me to plod around on.

So far this breeding season we have seen the safe arrival of a colt foal for Rayjan Salique by Escarda Mozambique (AU) (pictured) – he is very elegant and tall and we have named him Kashami Saleem (pending).

We are still waiting for the foal from Bint Bint Maysamma by Simeon Saraaf (AU) - this will be our first Straight Egyptian foal for the stud! Very exciting!

We know it is unfair to have favourites, but we can't help it when it comes to Bint Shahdira and we and several other people, can't wait for the arrival of her foal by Chelleason Jullyani (AU) - this is sure to be a beautiful foal.

Kelaray Stud The foaling season is upon us already, and so far we have been graced with two outstanding young foals. Both sired by RHR Heir of Marwan (US). Simoen Seana (AU) (Imperial Madaar x Simeon Sivan) gave us an exotic filly and Bluegrass Made in Heaven (AU) (D’amors Saabi Khan x Bluegrass Love Me Tender) a rather big colt. Both these babies are available for purchase. Our other mares due to foal are Miracle of Love (AU) and Deveron Airs n Graces (AU), both of which are in foal to Gymnastik Star and due December. Our Riding Pony mare Willowcroft Chorus is due to Kolbeach Hollys Masterpiece in January.

We recently imported our Arabian Riding Pony colt (now gelded) Kelaray Carpaccio (Concherto FF) while on his dam Rathowen Sepia Shadings. Chino is now competing this season in the led pony ring and his dam is on lease to Sandhill Performance Ponies.

Internationally our stud has been doing us proud with Kelaray Goddess of Love (Gazal Al Shaqab x Miracle of Love) recently competing at the Victorian Arabian Championships to win the Supreme Female of the show. She then went to the National Arabian Stud show to win Reserve Champion Junior Filly, which was a pleasure to watch. A great start to Gazelle’s season this year in Australia. We are looking forward to her being shown at the East Coast Championships and the Australian Championships once again.

While visiting Mulawa Arabian Stud in Sydney we also added the anglo mare Miss Dior MI to the broodmare band. Miss Dior is out of the elite Anglo mare Nalla Fate n Fortune whom I have wanted a daughter of for many years, and I am pleased I finally had the opportunity. Miss Dior MI will be shown this coming season for us by JH Showtraining. Foals due for us in Australia this season include Langtree Gold Portrait in foal to Gai El Jullyen, and Aloha Hussars Rose in foal to Echoes of Marwan. This will be Echoes of Marwan’s first Anglo foal born.

Recently we have added the mares Brumarba Shai Dove (USA) (Simeon Shai x Imperial Miriyah) in partnership with Dawn Valley Arabians to the breeding programme. Dove has a stunning filly at foot by Ansata Nile Pharaoh (US) which is available for purchase. Simeon Seana (AU) is currently at Rhodium Arabians being bred to Simeon Saraaf (AU), we are very excited about this mating and can’t wait to see the beautiful baby these two will produce. Bluegrass Made in Heaven (AU) has been sold to Australia, and will leave early 2015 to head to her new home.

KP Arabians KP Arabians would like to thank all the breeders of New Zealand for embracing RHR Heir of Marwan (US). Heir’s first foals in New Zealand have arrived and are nothing short of amazing. With progeny in Saudi Arabia, England, USA, New Zealand and Australia "Heir" has gone global. We sincerely thank Ms Kelly Mason of Kelaray International for all her hard work and her belief in Heir of Marwan. Here in Australia, KP Arabians’ first foal of the season was born on the evening of the 2nd November (below). A beautiful Chestnut filly named Royal Afheir (pending) out of our most treasured mare Bremervale Charisma (Desperado x Bremervale Bey Heart x Rave VF). Scarlette as we call her is the full sister to the 2013 East Coast Champion 2/3 year Filly - Charismatic Heiress KP owned by Shirilee McEweno of Riversleigh Arabians. Our second foal is due in December out of Special Kaiy (US) (Ghazal Al Shaqab x Special Treat). Lawrence Arabians Life has settled down at Lawrence Arabians since the arrival of the new stallion Pevensey Regent (Arfaja Rococo x Pevensey Baybe) from Australia in July. Poor Regent arrived in North Otago at a time when the weather was being most foul. I have had to keep a close eye on him because the transition from Australia to a New Zealand winter could have knocked him back considerably. Instead, he

seems to have flourished with the TLC and I am happy to report that Regent has served his two consorts namely: Sunny Brae Jasmine (Czarak x Dellmount Jamil) and Zareth-Shahar (Quassa x Zhola). At time of writing, neither mare has returned in season so we are keeping everything crossed that we will have a couple of foals next Spring. Lambing and other farm activities have occupied my time and I have had to content myself with living vicariously. Through the marvel of technology I can follow the exploits of our homebred Arabians and those horses bred by others by our stallions. Zeuxis (Quassa x Zhola) and Bridgett James (below) made their endurance debut at Cannington in November and qualified in the 40km. Bridgett was full of praise for Zook's performance and was still riding high when she came home. Further south, Jo Forrester and Kadin (Quassa x Kizzy) persevered through atrocious weather to win their first Open 80km at Mt Linton's Sandy Point. While Sarah Walters and Mylor (Quassa x Marigold) took out the open 40km. At a previous Mount Linton ride Jo and Sarah had gone to the line in the Open 40km with Sarah finishing first by a whisker and Jo second, 2:17:24 and 2:17:25 - only one second in it. Sharing these good times with our "extended family" is the reward for breeding horses.

DESERT STAR’S SHEIK EL SHAKLAN (Sheikh) is a deep chestnut stallion standing 15.1hh with a white star and two small socks. I remember meeting his sire, Eastwinds Axiom, not long after he arrived in New Zealand and that was it for me. I had to have some of that blood and took two mares to him: Sheikh’s dam, Hestbank Phebe, and Phebe’s dam, Cassini.

From the moment Sheikh took his first steps he looked like a colt and had a look-at-me attitude. Sheikh has produced an exact 1:1 ratio of colts to fillies and has stamped all his foals with height, lovely eyes and his outstanding temperament.

Sheikh has the most amazing large round dark eyes placed well on a typey broad Arabian head. He has a well-balanced body with good bone and very short cannons. He tops this all off with the most gentle, easy to handle temperament.

Sheikh has only been shown a few times, but has won Reserve Champion, Best Stallion, and New Zealand National Top 3.

His dam, Hestbank Phebe, was a multi-champion and his sire, Eastwinds Axiom, was a multi-champion and a New Zealand National Champion.

SS FARID (Farid) is a Straight Egyptian stallion who stands 15.2hh. He is eight years old and has now greyed from his black foal colour.

I first saw Farid at the 2009 New Zealand National Show in the North Island. He came flying into the ring and it was like his feet never touched the ground. All I could think was wow! He was crowned the 2009 Reserve National Champion Colt in a large class of good colts. What really convinced me that I needed him in my breeding program was meeting his family - dam, sire and his full brother who was only a few months old at the time.

Farid is a tall, upstanding stallion who has the most amazing uphill movement. He has a lovely masculine head with lovely large eyes.

We took him to two shows in 2014. He was placed Purebred Champion Stallion at the All Arabian Show and then crowned New Zealand National Champion Stallion at the Nationals. I am planning on breaking him in over this coming winter and am really looking forward to riding him. We have only put Farid over one mare to date and the result is one of the best fillies produced at Desert Star Arabians.

When your father is a New Zealand National Champion, your full brother is a New Zealand National Champion and your grandfathers are United States National and European Champions, you know you are bred to breed on.

MORROCCAN JAYDEE is a 4 year old stallion bred at Morrocco Arabians. He is the first colt retained at the stud and has been bred with proven endurance and show lines on both sides of his family.

His dam, Morroccan Jaylina, is by the show proven stallion Soolia’mon (AU). Soolia’mon has produced show champions and endurance horses, such as JA Javan, a 3* qualified endurance horse now competing in Dubai. Jaylina is out of the Bold Fyre (US) daughter JA Janaya. Bold Fyre has produced many top endurance horses such as Morroccan Fyre and Morroccan LAS Shilo both UAE exports, to name a few. Shilo also took home the Reserve NZ National Champion Gelding show title in 2006.

JayDee is by Jacob JCA (US), who also holds great show lines. His sire Jake Jamaal JCA has produced many ridden and in-hand show horses in the USA. Jacob himself was the Reserve NZ National Champion Stallion in 2009. JayDee’s half brother JA Jericho has been successfully shown, taking home Reserve Champion Gelding at the 2013 Royal A&P Show. He is also now one of the first Jacob foals to be out competing in endurance.

JayDee holds many qualities of his lineage - solid build with flowing paces that cover the ground effortlessly. His charisma and strong will give him the attitude needed to become a great endurance horse. He has that classical Arabian type, with high tail carriage, arched neck and classic Arabian head.

We were pleased to announce last month, the arrival of his first foal out of the champion endurance mare AA Amberley. At 25, this is Amber’s last foal. She produced a tall, leggy chestnut filly, showing a need to run already. She has many attributes of her sire, with her dam’s feminine looks and sassy nature. We are hoping to get a few more foals from JayDee before he himself begins his endurance career.

Morroccan JayDee is only at the start of his life and career, and we expect to see great things from him and his progeny in the very near future. With his size and scope he will make an amazing riding horse, and with his good nature will be a pleasure to have around for a very long time.

Pegasus Bay ArabiansThere has been a revival and renewal of energies, thank goodness. The above mares (and gelding) have come through the winter looking really well, although we did have more snow post this September photo. Except for the two rugged mares they are all Earth Wind and Fire progeny. They are a beautiful ‘family’ group, with many close relations e.g. full siblings, having performed well in the endurance field. The Deuss family had Flight of Fancy and Pacifica, Kevin James has Diam’id and Merma’id. There are still three mares not in this group but related.

The young (relatively speaking at 9 years of age) stallions, Xanthus (Coolinda Park Kandydat x Coolinda Park Xarla) and Pukaea (Elenbee’s R-Rated x Aramoana) have very graciously accepted their very erratic training for saddle work over the last few years. They are so very different in type and temperament, which keeps me on my toes and learning constantly also. An absolute delight actually. Love every minute. Another ‘boring day at the office’ photo, however, that is that (October 2014). (Pukaea says ‘the fence got my tail!)

As a heads up signal that Pegasus Bay Arabians is on the move so to speak again, Coolinda Park Khloe is infoal to Earth Wind and Fire for a January foal. As the last foal born here is now 7 years it has been a wee while, and quite exciting. Earth Wind and Fire is now 23 years of age, and has not changed much except to slow down a little.

His daughters are an absolute delight to be with.

The Pegasus Bay Arabian website is in for an overhaul and a serious update, that also has been a long time coming. So watch this space, there will be a notification in due course.

In the meantime hopefully work commitments will reduce sufficiently to enable Coolinda Park Lucja to come back in out of abject boredom and resume saddle work. She has just been the most very special rehab teacher one could ever have dreamt about. Here’s hoping I can pick up where we left off a couple of years ago.

Louise Raymond Our beautiful mare Inshallah Indiana (AU) (Tommie x Inshallah Impulse) was kind to us first time breeders, holding out and having a daylight baby, born at 10.20ish am on September the 25th 2014. Much to our delight the foal is a much hoped for colt, bay and born with the appropriate amount of bling. Imported in dam he is by Inshallah Arabians resident stallion Monarch Lodge Ambition (Tommie x Pevensey Raida). He is everything we hoped for and as expected, being a double Banderol descendent and also Inshallah bred he is a very upstanding colt with presence to burn. He has a delightful temperament and he has become part of the family in no time. We can’t wait to see how he develops and at this stage things are looking promising that he may be the horse who reintroduces the Banderol lines to NZ, along with a few new Crabbet lines. He has such an illustrious family particularly undersaddle, so this will also be his destiny. Waiting on confirmation of our stud name and then we can announce his pending name. The dream has become a reality………..

Sandpiper Arabians 2014 began traumatically and tragically for Sandpiper Arabians with the loss of Gazaalia, our International Champion mare, late in 2013 and then her mother, Gwinivere, in April 2014. Both were lost due to laminitis and it has been a hard learning curve. However, we hope that the bad times are behind us now and we look forward to 2015 with renewed enthusiasm. Our other English mare, Jazaaria was clearly missing her friends and so I decided to look for another mare to keep her company and with the intention of putting both in foal to Rooh Al Reeh, our stallion.

Some time was spent in the search – I found it difficult to think of replacing either of my original mares but I saw some lovely horses and thanks must go to the studs visited.

Bryan and I decided we needed to meet the horses, rather than just look at pictures and talk to breeders so we set off, firstly to Oamaru where Sarah Hamer showed us some beautiful horses and we had a great time with her and her children. We also made the acquaintance of the Stallion: Wind N Fire (AU) – a very young 21! Sarah and her family were helpful and informative. A great place to begin. Thank you so much Sarah and co for giving us such a memorable time. I was very taken with a bay mare, Sahar Park Shika, so had lots to think about.

Then we set off again, this time to meet Janice and Ray Wilson in Mosgiel. We were lucky with the weather and our journey had the advantage of some great scenery. Janice introduced us to Rayjan Elia, who I rather fell for and eventually bought. Both the bay mare at Sarah’s and Elia are by the same stallion, CRA Sihr Shahrif (US) who stands at Rayjan Stud. He is a lovely (and lively) stallion with blood lines which I have been interested in ever since I went on an organised American Stud Tour with breeders from the UK. The purchase was completed and she arrived safe and sound. It took her a while to get used to being stabled but she has settled in well and she and Jazaaria are firm friends.

I will never forget my original mares but with the purchase of Elia feel I can now look forward to a very interesting future. The adventure begins......

Supreme Arabians The stud is now situated in the King Country, on 1200 acres at Matiere, north west of Taumarunui. The stud has a total of 30 Arabian horses, 7 stallions, 8 brood mares, young stock and endurance horses in work.

The stud has always followed a strict breeding plan based on old proven performance bloodlines and the use of line breeding to produce a consistent type of base brood mare herd. The foundation stallion was Four Winds Azahi (Waimeha Eclipse x Four Winds Azahra), still well and fertile at 24 years of age. He was crossed with Four Winds Bint Nalani initially, and currently with Waltercraig Catalina to give a double Waimeha cross and double Crystal Fire cross. The offspring were then bred to E’arlia Jairim (Ralvon Pilgrim x Jacel) and more recently his son Supre Nassir who are both double Royal Domino bred. This was a proven blend for performance in Australia.

The stud more recently has imported the stallion Rivergum Dark Knight (Kyle x Rowallan Dark Mist) from Australia. This brought into the performance mix the bloodlines of Count Manilla, another proven blend with Royal Domino and Crystal Fire. Also I wanted the Spindrift blood through Delos, Sylvia and Poldark (Aethon x Bettina). Reacquiring the bloodlines of Bettina was just as important, as she is the dam of Poldark and Khotan who have left a performance legacy both internationally and in New Zealand. Bettina is closely related to Ngapa Joussif’s dam Ngapa Maid, both being by Cephalus out of the full sisters Copper Maid and Shermaid. Rivergum Dark Knight is currently under saddle and will be out on the endurance field this season.

The next and current step in the breeding program was to acquire the bloodlines of the Pure Crabbet horses I grew up admiring in all the Australian Magazines before they were all gone. These were the bloodlines of Silver Moonlight, Greylight, and Baz through their progeny Somerled, Sardonyx, Silver Samerio, Fenwick Panache, and Arfaja Danyon. With this goal the Stud has just imported the pure Crabbet Stallion Prince Eligani SPA (Binley Prince Iqbal x Eveeta) (pictured below as a three year old). His stunning dam Eveeta is by the famous stallion Fenwick Panache.

We’ve also imported the pure Crabbet mare Aleenah SPA (Elian SPA x Akeelah SPA), a double Sarafire mare, who carries a double cross to Sardonyx and another line to Eveeta. She is in foal to the Sabino Stallion Eliseo SPA (Arfaja Sarif x Eveeta).

The last purchase is the Pure Crabbet Mare Inshallah Echo’s Rose (Inshallah Silver Echo x Fenwick Rene). This brought in another line to Baz who is the sire of the brothers Somerled and Crenel and she has two crosses to Greylight. She is in foal to the stallion Silverfly SPA (Arfaja Danyon x Hajarlee), a double Silver Somerio (Somerled x Silver Doura (Silver Moonlight) and Fenwick Panache bred stallion.

This combination will give the stud the combination of bloodlines to continue its line breeding and performance program well into the future.

Waiora FarmIt has been a while since I have checked in, but the last 12 months have seen a lot of changes for me. For starters I have sold all my small ponies to allow me to concentrate on larger ponies and purebreds. Waiora Black Latte has been gelded, and has grown into a lovely ridden saddle hunter pony. His new owners are delighted with him, and even though he is just a youngster, he is a huge confidence booster for his little rider, we wish them all the luck in the future. Latte has welcomed three foals in his last crop, two adorable colts for Carole Pinkney at Parklands Pony Stud, and striking black overo filly for Starline Miniature Stud she is expected to mature 14hh and will be retained by her owners as a ridden pony.

I purchased Rayjan Khandi (CRA Sihr Shahrif (US) x Rayjan Heiress), from Ray and Jan Wilson after she went National Champion Junior Purebred for Rayjan Arabians. She is a delight and constantly blows my mind with how lucky I am to own her, she is a truly beautiful filly. She will have her North Island showing debut at the Arabian Spectacular (NI Champs) then the Arabian National Championships, With any luck she will defend both her titles but win or lose she is my darling.

Waiora Audacious Lady, my purebred mare by CRA Sihr Shahrif (US) went Supreme Champion at the Arabian Spectacular last season, which was amazing for me, she is such a special mare. She had tested infoal to RHR Heir of Marwan (US), but as her due date approached my worst fears were confirmed with a scan, she had lost it at some stage. This was devastating and saw me make the very hard decision to sell her rather than see her waste in the paddock while waiting for an appropriate stallion to breed her to. Lady has now moved onto what I consider the best possible place for her, and I look forward to following her progress.

For some time I have watched and admired Saudi El Perseus, the Brazilian stallion in Australia. I have been luckily enough to

secure a gorgeous yearling colt by him as the future breeding partner for Khandi. Bacchante Paparazzi is out of Bacchante Evangaline, the dam of Renaissance, Bacchante Arabian’s gorgeous upcoming sire. If Paparazzi travels and settles well the aim is to take him to the Arabian National Championships and stand him to a select outside mares next season.

So exciting times ahead, hope to catch up with everyone at the upcoming shows, by the sounds of it the Auckland Arabian Horse Club has organized an amazing event for the 2015 Nationals at the NZB Karaka complex!

Health & Safety for Equine Business by Ayla RonaldNew health and safety laws are expected to come into force 1 April 2015. These changes increase obligations on everyone in a work environment. These increased obligations also come with increased penalties. For worst case breaches of health and safety requirements, penalties are up to $600,000 and 5 years imprisonment for individuals and up to $3,000,000 for corporate entities. Yes that is six zeros!

With these reforms it’s a great time to update your health and safety policies and procedures to ensure those penalties never affect you and more importantly to make sure people are kept as safe as possible. The benefits of getting health and safety right include enhanced reputation, decreased business costs through ACC levies and absenteeism, better work culture and most importantly fewer injuries.

Everyone should keep in mind that if you control a workplace your health and safety measures must protect any person entering the workplace. You need to consider individuals and their experience when developing policies. This is especially important when dealing with horses where the experience of a rider has a definite effect on a) the horse and b) the measures that should be in place to protect both the horse and the person. Even a horse’s temperament will affect the measures you take to keep everyone safe.

In all workplaces the best people to identify and implement health and safety measures are the people who have the knowledge and experience of the workplace. This applies even more so in the equine industry where people closest to a horse will know its temperament and vices better than anyone.

There is an obligation to take all reasonably practicable steps to limit risks to health and safety. What is reasonably practicable depends on the circumstances and the hazards involved. Determining what is reasonably practicable means balancing the likelihood and possible consequences of an accident, the knowledge of the person involved, the possible ways to minimize or eliminate the risk and the costs.

Obviously younger or inexperienced workers in equine businesses need a lot more guidance than people raised around horses. But with experience sometimes comes complacency so it is equally important to remind people of best practice and make sure health and safety policies are followed.From a practical perspective you should at least:

• Have a robust health and safety policy which takes into account the particular circumstances of the workplace in order to reduce accidents;

• Have an accidents and near miss record and make sure it is used;• Perform workplace orientations with staff on their first day to ensure staff know and will adhere

to policies;• Ensure proper equipment is used;• Advise visitors of risks on arrival and especially before they interact with any horses or hazards;• Assess ability before anyone rides; and• Implement different levels of hazard control depending on a rider’s experience. Each workplace is different and will require different controls but a solid health and safety policy is an essential first step.
