LOCAL ARAB TIMES, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5, 2017 5 Kuwait University don calls for multi-nation interaction ‘College of Science exerts efforts to cut rate of withdrawals’ KUWAIT CITY, April 4, (KUNA): Kuwait Univer- sity seeks to interact with academic establishments of other countries in im- plementation of one of its key objectives, says the KU president. The university administration makes sure that students are regu- larly involved in scientific and cultural occasions in and outside Kuwait, said Dr Hussein Al-An- sari, in a statement after inaugu- rating “peoples’ cultural forum,” organized by the KU. Groups from Saudi Arabia, Bah- rain, Oman, Palestine, Tunisia and Algeria are taking part in the activ- ity, displaying traditional dresses, books and handicrafts. Rami Tahboub, the Palestinian Ambassador, boasted of his coun- try’s participation noting that the pavilion displays Al-Quds ency- clopedia, 30,000 editions of which have been printed by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information. Photos by the renowned Kuwaiti photographer Hamed Al-Amiri are exhibited at the forum. Some of them depict ancient and traditional professions such as pearl diving. Kuwaiti artist Hussein Al-Bazzaz displays prototypes of old Kuwaiti dhows and visitors are served Ku- waiti cuisines. Meanwhile, assistant Dean for Students Affairs at College of Sci- ence Dr Adeeba Al-Hirban high- lighted the efforts being exerted by the college to reduce the rate of with- drawals from the college and rate of transfers to other colleges during the current period, especially with the increasing number of students who enrolled undeservingly into the col- lege, reports Al-Qabas daily. In her statement, Dr Al-Hirban affirmed that the college and its aca- demic sections encourage students to continue classes until they com- plete their academic studies. This is done through various methods such as orientation meetings, encourage- ment campaigns and various work- shops. However, in reality, the colleges that they transferred to are actually more difficult compared to the College of Science. Dr Al-Hirban affirmed that any student can pass the courses of the Science College provided they at- tend the lectures, carry out revision and prepare for exams. She stressed that, “The demand for graduates from various sec- tions of the College of Science is high in the labor market in both public and private sectors”. Dr Al-Hirban explained that the Deanship of Student Affairs at the college opens its doors to students and their parents to solve any prob- lems related to the students, the academic performance, points or courses or even examinations. The dean is ready to listen, discuss and work according to the university’s rules and regulations. She emphasized the fact that it is not allowed for students to be accompanied with their parents in the lecturers’ offices for discussing with them about academic related issues, adding that the college pro- hibits this in order to avoid any problems related to pressure. Dr Al-Hirban affirmed that eve- ry student has the right to go to his/ her lecturer on individual basis to discuss his/her academic related issues without seeking the com- pany of others, especially since it is the natural right for students of this level who can articulate their issues without any difficulty. Al-Fares stressed the importance of admitting secondary school students with distinguished grades in the colleges of education. He noted the faculties mold trainees to serve at the end of their edu- cation and that facilities in education col- leges should attract excellent students. He noted a committee with members from the Ministry of Education and College of Education held its first meeting about one month ago to discuss the issue. Meanwhile, Parliamentary Education Committee declared support to the steps taken by Minister Al-Fares to reform education, noting many countries such as Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Finland, Germany and UAE follow the trend. The festival, which lasts for three days, also hosts award- winning poet and novelist Sinan An- toon. The main theme for this year’s festival is migration, identity, and cultural transformation.
