Other tutors: Simon James (SJ), Deirdre O’Sullivan (DOS), Sarah Tarlow (ST), Ruth Young (RY).

Module outline:

The course is divided into four blocks of lectures covering key themes in world historical archaeology: the Roman Empire; Re-Shaping the World; New States and New Faiths; Capitalism and Colonialism. There are three to five lectures in each block. Seminar groups of c. 6 students meet nine times in the semester, using specially prepared study packs.

To foster the development of students’ learning and communication skills through small group seminar teaching allied to the lectures.

Intended learning

write a properly-referenced academic essay

carry out focused research and present findings in seminar discussions.

Methods of teaching:

Method of assessment:

Two one-hour lectures per week in Semester Two supported by nine weekly one-hour seminars (students are required to read materials in advance of seminars and be able to contribute to discussion). There is also one programmed related fieldtrip to Kenilworth Castle and Abbey (Saturday 27th February 2010).

The course is assessed by: (i) an essay (selected from the list provided below) worth 40%, and (ii) an exam paper worth 60%.
