    AIM

To design and build a remote controlled electric-powered airboat that should be able to

move on terrains like swamp and water. The participants need to make the airboat to solve

the maze in the minimum possible time.

    Arena (Refer to Arena Layout)

The airboat enters the maze from an end, moves in the arena and comes out inminimum possible time

The arena has mixed features of water and swamp. The maximum level of water that

can be found in the arena is 0.5m

The arena would have standing blocks where the driver can stand and navigate the

    airboat

The maze walls would be made of bricks

Distance between to 2 parallel walls would be 2.5m

One should note that there are more than one way to get out of the maze

    RULES AND REGULATION

    Team Size: 5

    1. The participant has to navigate the airboat in a given arena with these conditions:

    Minimum Time

Least number of contact with the maze walls

    2. The participants will be given 3 runs to perform the task

    3. A maximum of 5 minutes per run would be allotted to the team to complete the run

    4. In each attempt, one person is allowed as to come near the arena and navigate the

    airboat.

    5. A run is said to be complete when the airboat enters the maze and comes out from

    exit

    6. The time of navigation is defined as the total time taken to complete a run.

    7.

The best of 3 timings will be accounted for final scoring.8. While one person is at the arena, other members of the team are not allowed to

    come along inside the arena.

    9. The team with the least amount of time taken to complete the lap (after taking into

account, all penalties into consideration) will be adjudged winners.

10.The teams should try to minimize the number of contacts with the maze walls during

    their run.

11.Each contact with the wall accounts for a penalty in scores.

12.A contact is defined as the brush of the body of airboat with the maze wall or walls

    during straight track or turns.

13.A contact is reported by organizers and their decision is final and abiding.

14.The teams are not allowed to come near the arena before or during the event until

    called.

    GENERAL RULES

    1. The participants are required to bring their complete kits to IIT Kharagpur

    2. A pair of receiver and transmitter (Rx and Tx) will be provided by organisers, on prior

request of the participants. The Tx-Rx pair has 4 channels. It can be used to control a

maximum of 3 servo motors. Participants who wish to use Rx and Tx provided by us,

will have to make provision for this receiver on their airboats. The participants can

bring their own set of receiver and transmitter if they want.

    3. All teams must be present before the commencement of an event. Teams will be

disqualified if they do not turn up during the slot allotted to them.

    4. Maximum Team size of 5 per team

    5. The teams must adhere to the spirit of healthy competition. The teams must not

damage the opponent's airboat in any way. Judges reserve the exclusive rights to

disqualify any team indulging in misbehaviour.

    6. The organizers reserve all rights to change any or all of the above rules. Change in

any rule, if any, will be highlighted on the website.

    7. All rounds of the event will be held at IIT Kharagpur during Kshitij, 2012.

    8. Judges decisions on any matter will be considered final.

    9. The participants need to send the video and pictures of their model by 25th

December 2011 to the Event Head.

    10. Any delay of submission of the model should be informed at [email protected]

    AIRBOAT SPECIFICATIONS:

    1. The airboat is a flat bottomed vessel which navigates with help of a propeller by

    fan.

    2. The dimension constraints of the airboat are:

    a. The length of the airboat must not exceed 0.50m

    b. The breadth must not exceed by 0.30m

    3. The airboat should be motor powered. Use of IC (Internal Combustion) engine is

    not allowed.

    4. The voltage of battery used should not be more than 12V

    5. The participants are free to use any materials of their choice. However the use of

Balsa wood, Sun Board and Styrofoam is advisable. Balsa wood is light and easy

to handle and fabricate, hence is a good choice.

    6. Participants are advised to make all parts of the airboats themselves. Usage of

Readymade and Almost-Readymade kits are strictly prohibited. Although use of

readymade actuators/motors, remote controls is allowed.

    7. Any team violating the above rule will be disqualified immediately.

    8. Use of multiple motors and actuators is allowed.

    9. The airboat must be a single object before it enters the arena.

10.All the electronic components on the model should be properly insulated and

water-proofed to avoid any foreign object damaging the components. This point

needs to be paid the utmost attention as there are many factors which would

tend to disturb the working of the electronic components while travelling the

    path.

    JUDGING PARAMETERS

The following parameters would be taken into account while judging:

    1. Time of the run (T): It is the time taken by the airboat to complete the run. The time is

calculated between the time it enters the maze and makes an exit.

    2. Contact One (C1): It is the number of times the airboat makes contact with the straight

walls of the maze in straight paths.

    3. Contact Two (C2): It is the number of times the airboat makes contact with the walls in a

    sharp right turn.

    4. Contact Three (C3): It is the number of times the airboat makes contact with the walls in a

    U-turn of the maze.

    MARKING SCHEME

    Time of run (T): T

    Penalty One (P1): 3C1

    Penalty Two (P2): 2C2

    Penalty Three (P3): C3

    Total Score: T + 3C1 + 2C2 + C3

Team with the least score wins.

    OTHER PARAMETERS:

    1. Number of airboats per team is not fixed. A team can field more than one airboat.

    2. Size and weight of the airboat is restricted.

    3. Participant will be allowed for a maximum of 3 runs. Best of the 3 runs will be

considered for the final score. The runs would not be consecutive and the

participants will be given time to make any small changes to the airboat if required.

    ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

    1. The entries are restricted to the student currently pursuing education in a

    recognized institute.

    2. The participants may be asked to furnish supporting documents at any later stage

    to prove the aforementioned condition.

    3. Students from different colleges can form a single team.

    4. Each team can contain a maximum of five participants
