Water Science and Technology With emphasis on climate change adaptation

background & aim of the conference

Water is an essential element of life and a commodity of vital importance for the survival of man and ecosystems. Its shortage is one of the most worrying problems of the new millennium. In many countries, the available water has reached or exceeded scarcity limits, as pollution reduces even more the suitability of water for use. Moreover, climate change is a very important emerging issue. Its more visible impacts concern water availability and extreme events including floods and droughts. The Mediterranean region is, according to all available models, one of the most vulnerable to climate change and major the disturbances to the water cycle are expected.

the aims of the conference are: n To address the water-related issues linked to adaptation to climate change. These include appropriate technology

on non-conventional water resources as well as the robust protection systems to reduce risks related to water.n To examine the potential water problems and the multiple implications, and to suggest solutions for the preservation

of the quality and quantity of water with emphasis given to the countries of Southeastern europe and the Mediter-ranean.

n To demonstrate the importance of new technologies and facilitate the promotion of relevant research, study and implementation of those technologies regarding water.

n To raise environmental awareness on water-related issues and increase political will, for the protection of public health and the implementation of new production rules and regulations in the wider water sector.

n To promote multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary programmes and collaboration among those who study, handle and use with water resources.

conference topics

The conference will cover a wide range of topics such as: n Water and climate (special session)

• Non-conventional water resources – gray water use, treatment reuse and recycling – desalination• floods & droughts • Water in transboundary relationships - international problems - shared water resources – transfrontier water pollution

n Integrated water resources management (IWRM) and planning – sustainable water use - domestic water manage-ment - river basin management - decision support systems – public participation

n Municipal and industrial waters: waste water treatment – sewage sludge management n Water quality- drinking water - pollution controln aquifers - reservoirs and lakes - groundwater remediation n Water for Irrigation – issues in arid regions – desertification and soil erosionn Seawater – problems in coastal area (and estuaries)n Water in environmental education and education for sunstainable development (special session)
