In this year of continuous and ongoing political scandal, it’s difficult to not regard, with a jaundiced eye, anything even remotely related to any level of government.

This was the cynical lens filter through which I was prepared to view, and participate in, this year’s County of Peterbor-ough 2013 Recognition Awards ceremony, held at the community centre in Norwood on May 24. What I experienced was a hugely pleasant surprise.

Cynicism RevokedBy Molly Moldovan

Continued from front page

This was the 20th anniversary of the annual awards and the county spared no effort at producing a seamlessly-run pageant to honour those chosen from among the best and brightest residents of our county. Members of the County Council were piped into the hall by piper John Lindsay and an honour guard of paramedics in full dress uniform. All those receiving awards were escorted to the dais by a member of the fire department; it was all impressively coordinated.

Nominees were in the categories of Youth, Sporting Excellence, Accessibility Recognition, Agricultural Leadership, Business Leadership/Entrepreneurial In-novation, Environmental Recognition, Sustainability, Leadership in Arts and Culture, Acts of Heroism, and Community Volunteer of the Year. There was also a special presentation of the Peterborough County Para-medic Service Medal, for those who had consistently performed well in that difficult job for 30, 20 and 12 years, respectively.

Each award presentation was preceded by a reading of the awardees’ achievements, read -- with sincere and obvious pride -- by either the mayor or deputy mayor of that person’s or group’s township. The lists of achievement of the youth contingent was in itself enough to banish my cynicism: some of these kids excelled in science, some in the arts, others in athlet-ics or volunteerism, some in all of these; all while maintaining a grade average of 90% or higher.

Lucy Perna and I were there on behalf of the Apsley Autumn Studio Tour group, to accept an award for Leadership in Arts and Culture. The Studio Tour has been operating for 19 years, and has been a mainstay of tourism in North Kawartha Township from its inception. We were proud to be recognised for our ef-forts, and truly honoured to be in the company of the other award winners.

Editor’s Note: Molly Moldovan is President and a founding member of the Apsley Autumn Studio Tour group. This year’s tour takes place on September 21 & 22; more information can be found at www.apsleys-tudiotour.com

BRIDGE REPORTby Bob Sutton

Please note that as of May 3, 2013, we went back to playing at the Apsley Legion Hall every Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. I have seen a marked improvement with our players being that the scores have tightened up considerably. It seems to me that the Bridge books have been flying off the shelves at the Library. Literature that I feel is pertinent for our group has been taken when I bring it in. Any new players are welcome to come and join us. We are friendly and helpful even if you just would like to watch us play. For further infor-mation, contact Bob at 705-656-9401.

DANCING FOR HOPE Glen Alda Seniors Report

The annual “DANCING FOR HOPE”, a fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation was held at the North Kawartha Community Centre on Friday, April 26th, 2013 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Seventy-seven line dancers sporting their PINK attire, had their feet moving to the two-step, the waltz, rhumba and dance cues such as the fishtail, whaletail, wrinkled sheet, duvet, scissors, sliding door etc.

Catharine Sheppard was chosen as the “Best Dressed Person in Pink”. $1,105.00 was raised through this special fundraiser and all proceeds will go towards the C.I.B.C.Run/Walk for the Cure October 6th, 2013.

Alice Liberty, organizer for this event, thanks North Kawartha Parks & Recreation and everyone who par-ticipated and supported this cause and helped to make this a very “special” day.

Alice Liberty

As I write this on the 12th of May, the snow is com-ing down, the flowers are sparkling, and the wind is certainly blowing things around. The past week or so has been wonderful with summertime temperatures, and garden work galore getting done. What happened? Not much I am afraid. I missed the last luncheon as my sisters were here visiting, so do not have much to report on except that the Emergency Response people were there along with representatives from the school. Apparently the luncheon was very good, I’m just sorry I missed it as I certainly enjoy a good meal neither I nor my wife had to prepare. Last month the presentation by Debbie and Sue from the library was enlightening as they provide more services than any of us present realized. I know of a couple of those present were keen to explore their ancestry once they learned this service was available.

For June, we usually make a trip to the Cody Inn in Buckhorn for a gathering, short meeting and a good feed of Chinese food. We all enjoy that. For the sum-mer months we usually suspend meeting as most of us are busy with family and friends, but some of us are planning a Bar-B-Que at the old school house in Glen Alda sometime in mid-summer and perhaps some Boules, cards, board games, or perhaps Croquet. Hope-fully I will have more to report next month.

It is with great sadness that, after 85 years of serv-ing the community, the Apsley Women’s Institute is disbanding.

Over the years, the Women’s Institute (W.I.) has ac-complished many important things for the community, such as organizing mail delivery for Apsley, keeping the streets and cemeteries clean, and purchasing poles and wiring to bring electricity to the centre of the vil-lage many years ago.

The W.I. was responsible for the building of Apsley’s first library in 1930, and when the building burned down in 1961, they worked hard to ensure that the library would be rebuilt, as it was in 1970.Each summer, on Canada Day, we held children’s games and hosted a luncheon at the Lions flea market, and all monies brought in were donated to different groups in Apsley.

I would like to thank all of our members, past and present, for their hard work and dedication to the com-munity over the years. If anyone is interested in learn-ing more about the accomplishments of the Women’s Institute in Apsley over the past 85 years, there is a book available for reading at the Apsley Library.

On May1st 2013 Mayor Jim Whelan visited the North Kawartha Medical Centre to thank Dr. Wagda Rayes and Nurse Practitioner Sally Khan for their service to the Community. North Kawartha presented Dr. Rayes and NP Khan with a year’s membership to the North Kawartha Community Centre Fitness Club.

When making the presentation Mayor Whelan stated: “It is with deep appreciation for the care and services you provide to the Township of North Kawartha.”

QUALITY AT ITS BEST

Fade to Gray“The time has come the walrus said to speak of other things: of ships and string and sealing wax, of cab-bages and kings …” Lewis Carroll.

Also, the time has come for the Bard to fade some-what into the background and I will not be appearing regularly after the June issue of the Apsley Voice.

I enjoy the writing I do, and I certainly thank all of you who have commented kindly upon that which I wrote, whether a poem or a rant. I have developed a small base of readers who do not agree with some of my opinions, but that is what a community is all about; not necessarily agreement, but intelligent dialogue.

In no other small community is there a publication like the Voice. It does not catalogue who is on vaca-tion and where, it is not filled with announcements about strawberry socials, and it has always allowed space for thoughtful, and sometimes controversial topics. The highest compliment a publication can earn is the sobriquet, “It’s a good read.” The Apsley Voice falls into that category.

I wrote a novel about four years ago, and must get back to it to turn 1,009 pages into something more compact and compelling. Thus my pen is not retir-ing, and my eyes will still tell my pen about the noble or nonsensical happenings around us.

Thank you for reading my stuff, and be well.

30’s my friends.

ABC Seniors ClubHi everybody. I’m the new president for the ABC Senior’s Club and feel very honored.

I am really enjoying myself as I find so much talent in our membership in Conversation, Artistic ability (mentally and physically) friendliness, sport savvy (golf, cards, shuffleboard, ping pong, line dancing, etc).

We only have one restriction, you have to be over fifty. Other than that, on Tuesday mornings, around 11:30am come on over to the Community Center, say hello and we will feed you with a hot meal for five dollars or pot luck or buffet for three dollars. You will be surprised how many happy-go-lucky people would like to meet you.

If you need a ride or have some physical problems that require assistance, we have members who would love to assist you in any manner they can.

The membership voted that the tickets for the bazaar quilt raffle be one dollar each or three for two dollars.

I find the new executive easy and enjoyable to work with and looking for exciting things ahead.

So remember when you wake up on Tuesday morn-ings, you say to yourself and/or mate that you’re head-ing to the community center for an afternoon of fun. Are you coming?

Respectfully, Cliff SteanePresident

Letter to the Editor

Council’s reply to the West Eels Lake Road issue was a true indica-tion of councils lack of concern for “certain ratepayers”. If council wants to keep using the court decision as their Stock (cop-out) answer, then they should review article #28 of the court decision that states, “the Province further argues that both it and the Municipality continue to maintain the forest ac-cess road.” Is it not time that this council’s dic-tatorial attitude undergoes a change? Have “THEY” lost sight of the fact that “THEY” are supposed to be public servants? Council is supposed to work for the people not against them.

Council Notes By Doug Hutton

Old Woodview Library to be SoldCAO, Shannon Hunter explained that the library reserve fund has been impacted by the cost furnishings and the paving of the library parking lot. As a result, the plans to build an outdoor pavilion for library Wi-Fi users, has been put on hold by the library board. The board also requested that the council consider selling the old Woodview library and replenishing the reserve with the proceeds of the sale. Ms. Hunter explained that the property was once consid-ered useful for additional parking but the township has obtained “substantial property along library road”, making the old library property redundant. Mayor, Jim Whelan confirmed that, even after the sale, there is still a block of property of ten acres with 192 feet of frontage that can be utilized in the future if necessary. Council agreed to declare the old Woodview Library surplus and proceed with the sale.

Gravel TenderRoads Superintendent, Craig Watson, recommended that the tender for gravel be awarded to Drain Brothers for $ 90,400. The only other bid was much higher at $157,000. Because the winning bid was about $20,000 under budget, Mayor, Jim Whelan suggested that it might be a good op-portunity to take advantage of the price to do more work on the roads. Mr. Watson agreed and will prepare a plan of how to best utilize the additional $20,000 worth of gravel including an amount being added to the stockpile.

MARVEL RAPIDS GOLF COURSEBy The Osborne Family

History of the Property: In 1888, James Ellerton walked from Apsley to the present Jeff Road with an axe over his shoulder to begin work on the 100 acres in Chandos Township conveyed to him by the Crown. Recognizing the beauty and benefits of Eels Creek, he acquired the adjoining 100 acres in Anstruther Township in 1911 again conveyed to him by the Crown. William Ellerton established a blacksmith shop behind the homestead. Stan Jeff remembered going with his father to have their horses shod. Today, you can still see the blackened walls of this shed. While removing the wallpaper in the house, we found pages of “The Mail and Empire” pasted to the boards to serve as insulation. The news of the day was that of the First World War, mostly 1912-13 articles. In 1975 Michael and Dan O’Brian purchased the property to run beef cattle.

In 1998, we drove past the house and noticed a “For Sale” sign. That evening we read an article about a golf course buying an old farm to extend their course. Being avid golfers we decided to take a look at the property the next day. With our son, Doug, we walked the open fields (now #1, 2 and 3 fairways). Once we came across the rapids on what is now #5 tee, we decided to submit an offer which was accepted. Thus, “we drove by one day walked it the 2nd day and owned it the 3rd day”!

Development: With Eels Creek meandering through the property, plus a carpet of sandy loam (perfect for growing grass) we were able to con-struct a challenging and picturesque 9 hole golf course. We hired neighbours, Sanford Trotter and Dan Albert to clear the land. As well, Bob Trot-ter and Chris Edwards operated an excavator and bulldozer. Doug Montgomery moved earth to build tees and greens. Family members were all in-volved in burning brush and picking rocks.

Operating: We opened June 1, 2000 and have been making improvements every year since. Golfers are always very impressed with the condition of our greens and the awesome beauty of the course thanks to Eels Creek. As well the addition to the clubhouse built by the Brinkman family, has enabled us to accommodate 52 people in a licensed facility for tournaments and “Nine & Dines.” We have active Men and Ladies groups, an excellent teaching pro-Brenda and a driving range where she can provide lessons for all ages.

SPRING ALIVE Story and photos by Rachel Conlin

Spring appears to be one of our shortest seasons. One day the woodstove’s going, the next you are desperately trying to keep your home cool. Spring is so quick that we often overlook nature’s bounty. There are many of nature’s edibles around us. Two of my favourites are Morel Mushrooms and Wild Leeks.

Morel Mushrooms (Common Morel) grow in deciduous areas, under elm and ash trees, at the edge of trails and gardens or cleared areas. They are difficult to find as they tend to blend in with the dried leaves. They are cone shaped and covered with a honeycomb like surface. You must be careful not to pull up the entire plant, but to gently squeeze it off at the base when you pick them. Sadly, they can also be hard to find because of poor picking methods and over harvesting. Once picked, rinse well and enjoy them fried in butter or cooked in sauce….mmm. A little is all you need. They tend to be rich. With the Morel, use extreme caution as there is a False Morel. I am certain there is a

correct name for this mushroom, but we know it as the “False Morel”. False Morels look similar to the Common Morel but are toxic.

Wild Leeks are a little easier and safer to come across. It is now illegal to harvest them in many

places across Canada due to over-picking Again (and as with all wonderful things in nature) moderation is key. Never harvest all the Wild Leeks in an area, or they will not return the following year. Wild Leeks are from the Allium fam-ily. They grow as onion or garlic does. You can find Wild Leeks in deciduous areas, in maple groves where it is slightly damp. Once rinsed, you can use the bulb and the leaves in

soups, fried or a little in salad.

The only drawback to these two delicacies is one of nature’s other bounties; Blackflies! But, if you love that fleeting taste of our spring that is not available from any store, it is well worth the effort.

Lions Report June 2013By Brenda Lenson

What a Mother’s Day, who would have thought of snow on May 12th! Fortunately, it was warm and inviting at the NKCC for our annual Mother’s Day Brunch. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it a great success! Special thanks to Lions Lil McCauley, Wendy Clear and all their volunteers!

Canada Day is coming! The parade is scheduled to begin at the school at 4:00 pm on Monday, July 1st, it will travel down Burleigh Street to Wellington Street, Jack Lake Road and then down to McFadden Road into the Lions Park. If you would like to participate in the parade, please contact Brenda at 705-656-9254. As soon as the parade is over, we will be having a cake cut-ting ceremony, bouncy castle, climbing wall and games for kids, so follow the last float to the park. Don’t forget the Lions will be having our annual barbecue and of course our famous fries! The best is at dusk with an amazing fireworks display. Come on out and join the fun.

Our biggest fundraiser is of course the Flea Market on Saturday, July 20th so mark your calendars! We are having donation drop off days at the Lions Park on Saturday, June 15th and 29th. If you have any items you would like to donate, please bring them to the park between 9 am and 12 pm. If you would rather have the Lions pick up items, please call our dispatcher, Wayne Armstrong at 705-656-3498. If you wish to be an outside vendor, please contact Brenda at 705-656-9254. Wally James has kindly offered to do our live auction. Come on out for some great bargains!

We would like to apologize to everyone for the misun-derstanding regarding the Walk for Guide Dogs. The Lions Foundation put the article in the Voice before we informed them that there wouldn’t be one this year in Apsley. Hopefully, this didn’t inconvenience anyone.

Sunday May 12th was Ascension Sun-day. This was when Jesus ascended into Heaven. Much earlier in time there was a similar happening.

Enoch was born before the time of Noah. He was the son of Jared who lived to the age of 962 years. Enoch was the worlds first Prophet and even predicted the great flood.

At 65 he had a son he named Methuselah. Methuselah was to become the oldest living human. He died at the age of 969. Enoch was a very righteous man and walked with God daily. At the age of 365, he did not die but ascended up into Heaven and was not seen again.

The story of Jesus ascension begins after his resurrection. He appeared many times to his followers over a period of 40 days. According to one account, he took 11 of his Disciples to the Mount of Olives. They watch as he was taken up and disap-peared into a cloud. and was not seen again. Unlike Enoch, Jesus was a carpenter and for a few years a teacher of the Word of God. He did not marry or have any sons or daughters. He was the most righteous man who ever lived and had an impact on man-kind which will never be equaled.

On June 15th Trinity will have a Yard and Bake sale. Come early for some great bargains.

Recently I was invited to a luncheon with the Glen Alda Seniors. After a delicious lunch and some quality conversations with members I was asked tospeak about our wonderful school and, in particular, volunteering. Volunteering at a school (or in any com-munity organization) not only benefits the organization but it can also benefit the volunteer as well.

Schools can benefit from adult volunteers through: • Increased individual attention for students • Extra support on projects • Stronger ties to the community • Higher levels of parent-teacher communication • Increased capacity to better serve a wider variety of youth needs • Higher test/grade scores • Strengthened programs • Improved student behavior

Volunteers benefit from volunteering, whether it’s from a closer peer-relationship with teachers and staff at the school or by building positive relationships with stu-dents. Volunteers benefit from their work with schools through: • Opportunities to meet new people • Improving communication, management, and inter-personal skills • Improving problem-solving skills • Increased self-confidence • A clearer understanding of school structure and curriculum • The opportunity to serve as a role model for students • The chance to inspire, educate, and motivate future generations

A special thanks to Jim Richmond and Peggy Pratley, two long serving volunteers with Apsley Central, who spoke on a personal level about the impact volunteering has had on them.

Is volunteering for everyone? Simply put, no. However, there are many ways in which to contribute to com-munity organization. All you have to do, is ask, “How can I help?”

BLUEBIRDS AND BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS

Cowbirds are described as “nest para-sites” when it comes to laying their eggs because they lay them in the nests of other birds and let the hosts raise them. The Halton Bluebird Club has Bluebird trails in Bronte Creek Provincial Park on both sides of Bronte Creek with Bluebird nest boxes along these trails which club mem-bers monitor weekly, checking to see if there are nests in them; watching to see what species of bird is flying into the box, how many eggs; how many chicks; when those chicks fledge. Sometimes they

are used by other species such as Sparrows and Wrens. They also band the chicks. For the first recorded time in the Club, a Cowbird laid two eggs in one of those Bluebird nests! Apparently birds are able to count the number of eggs that they lay so this Cowbird had to dispose of one Bluebird egg each time it laid one of its own. On May 19, there were five eggs in the nest. On May 26, monitors reported three blue eggs plus two chicks still sitting in half their egg shells. On June 2, still thinking that they were Bluebird chicks because Bluebirds were flying in and out of the nest box, the Monitors were surprised at the size of the two chicks and suggested that they were large enough to band. On June 5, banders found that the two large chicks were gone, leaving two very small chicks and an un-hatched egg. Those two large chicks had hatched May 26 and were fledged in less than ten days! Bill Read to the rescue: those large chicks were Cowbirds! He also noted that female Cowbirds tend to lay their eggs in the nest of species which raised them. If these two young Cowbirds are females, they will probably seek out a Bluebird nest this year for their eggs. Monitors will keep a sharp eye on the size of the eggs. It is illegal to remove Cowbird eggs from a nest. Cowbirds check on their eggs and have been known to destroy the host nest if their eggs are removed. Perhaps another solu-tion may be found such as a different style of nest box that Cowbirds cannot access. Many thanks to Joyce LeChasseur and to Sylvia van Walsum for this fasci-nating glimpse into nature.

It is difficult to imagine! However, if one is in need, and isolated… out in the woods... back on the trail…down the muddy fire route, we all want to be rescued if pos-sible!

The Woodview Gardeners met last Saturday. We went out to examine the plots. The garlic had wintered over and was happily pushing through the straw mulch. What a delight!

Mostly the plots still look sad. The beautiful maple tree has grown enormously and shades many of the plots. At least the five plots to the west enjoy lots of sun next to the tennis courts and are free of shade. The planters are looking just fine and ready for the samplers when the weather warms up: mint, basil, beans and parsley. The bench in the shade will be a refuge when summer ar-rives.

With the bitter winds, rain and cold temperatures it is hard to imagine that planting can happen. Yet, by June we will be busy with seeds and small plants. We are still few but strong in spirit and ready to welcome others!

The Sacred Water Circle Gathering had a fine start with ceremony at the Petroglyphs on May 8th. More than 60 people attended. Our very own Deputy Mayor Barry Rand was there to welcome and participate. The day was sunny with black flies galore celebrating as well. What a crowd! Still, nothing could spoil the pleasure of the celebration, the honouring of the water and the feast held outdoors after the ceremony.

Today the sun is shining and, having experienced a short summer-like week and a colder-than-usual spring week, Woodview residents - resilient as always, await more beautiful spring days and anticipate the warmth of sum-mer and the holiday season. It won’t be long!

Acts of Kindness by Bob Cottrell

During a visit to my Daughter’s in Mississauga, I ex-perienced several acts of kindness by complete strangers. My plan was to drive to Oshawa and take the Go Train the rest of the way. Due to heavy traffic, I exited early and soon became totally lost. A kind lady in a coffee shop went out of her way to get me on course. Once on the train, I was okay till I got to Union Station. Sud-denly I was in a mass of people who all knew where they were going but me. A kind stranger saw my plight and stopped. He told me how to get to the next train going west. There were a couple of other times I received as-sistance before I got to my daughters. When she asked how my trip went I said it was very uneventful.

Five years in development, Woodview Golf is a new 9 hole golf course conveniently located in the Kawartha Lakes region, which will open to the public in mid June of 2013. It offers great value with exciting course fea-tures at affordable rates. The course is a generous 2,742 yards, Par 35, with subtle features such as pronounced greens, raised tee blocks, and fairways aligned in paral-lel with the woodlands. The course has been designed to provide enjoyment for guests of all golfing abilities, while winding its way through the existing terrain. The property and surrounding area provide natural habitat for a wide range of mammals and wildlife (please don’t feed the deer). The design, construction and on-going operations, reflect a commitment to preserve and pro-tect all of these natural heritage features. This new course is the result of the determination and perseverance by the entire Challenger family, Eric and Diane, and their sons, Christopher and Hugh. With lo-cal roots already established in the area, Eric and Diane are excited to soon settle in Woodview on a permanent basis and be active members of the community. The architecture and design was created by Hugh and Eric Challenger. Using aerial photos, detailed topography maps, GPS coordinates, and basic fundamental knowl-edge of golf course design, they were able to establish a beautiful flow, utilizing the natural features of the land.

Please come and help the entire community celebrate the official opening of this new business which will soon draw golfers young and old to this vibrant part of the North Kawartha area. This event will occur on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 10:30 am at Woodview Golf, located at 65 Northey’s Bay Road, Woodview, KOL 3E0 (rain or shine), across from the Fire Hall and Com-munity Center.
