Research Interests
Communication Networking: Modeling, performance analysis, optimisation and control of wirelessnetworks. In particular, modeling of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, quality of service in wirelessLANs; self organisation, self tuning, and distributed computing in wireless sensor networks; wirelessad-hoc internets.
Research Highlights
We have developed a generalized fixed point approach for the saturation throughput analysis ofIEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks. Our analysis handles the new quality of servicemechanisms, and also the possibility of packet capture. We have also extended the analysis to thecase of two overlapping cells. We have developed a new approach to formulating the problem ofoptimal association of stations and access points in a wireless local area network. In the area ofad-hoc wireless sensor networks, we have developed a complete architecture for self organizationand localization. In addition we have studied the time and energy complexity of distributedcomputation on ad- hoc sensor networks.

Research Highlights
(i) Nonlinear detectors based on quantizers have been designed for detection of deterministic /random signals in non-Gaussian noise. These detectors, which are based on the phenomenon ofstochastic resonance (SR), have been shown to outperform optimal linear detectors. A combinationof SR quantization and wavelet packet transform has been used to design detectors of transientsignals in non-Gaussian noise. SR quantization has also been used to enhance the performance ofarray processors used for direction-of-arrival estimation and source localization in the ocean. ( ii ) Apreprocessing technique called Wavelet Array De noising has been developed for improving thelow-SNR performance of array processors used for direction-of-arrival estimation and sourcelocalization in the ocean.

These include the design of micro machined components for microwaveapplications, micro machined antennas, fractal antennas, miniaturized planar components such asfilter, etc. Capabilities for circuit level and planar electromagnetic analysis have been set up in theLab. recently. A vector network analyzer for characterization of microwave systems andcomponents up to 50GHz has been procured. Further enhancements to the measurement facility iscurrently underway. Three M.E. (Telecom.) students are being guided for their project works. Inaddition, one M.Tech. project of a student from the Instrumentation department has been completedusing facilities acquired through these funds. Two research students have joined us recently.

Research Highlights
Designed and developed a Broadband Wireless MIMO channel measurement system in the 2.4-2.5GHz (MMDS) band. Conducted measurements to characterize the Broadband Fixed WirelessMIMO channel in the MMDS band. The above work was carried during the sabbatical leave atStanford University. Co-author of the IEEE 802.16 standard on Wireless Channel models for FixedBroadband Wireless Access Systems. Developed the Interleaved OFDM system which has a bettercode rate than the conventional OFDM system and with reduced complexity. The stability ofscheduled multi-access communication over quasi-static flat fading channels with random codingand independent decoding of messages has been investigated.

Research Highlights
CURRENT:In Sep. 2004 we were the first to explicitly solve an open problem posed in 2003 byZheng and Tse in MIMO wireless signal design. The problem was worked on by leading researchersworldwide. The problem was one of designing space-time codes that optimally tradeoff capacity forreliability over a wide variety of fading channels. Our solution has the added benefit of being explicitand having minimum delay. We also have extensions to the ARQ channel where one bit of feedbackis assumed. PAST: Research resulted in (a)construction of the short scrambling code used in theWCDMA standard (b) solution of a longstanding problem in coding theory relating to the apparentlinear-like behaviour of a pair of nonlinear codes.

Research Highlights
We have explored the possibility of using blind equalization in wireless channels and found that insome fading scenarios (K>0) blind/semi-blind equalizers can outperform training based equalizers. In wireless channels we have also studied the benefits of adaptive joint source-channel coding basedon the queue length and channel state information. It was found that such cross-layer design cansignificantly improve the system performance.
