Also prevents white muscle disease (WMD), a degenerative muscle disease caused by a deficiency of selenium and/or Vitamin E. Selenium and Vitamin E deficiencies can produce symptoms of growth disorders and reproductive losses: lower conception rates, fetal reabsorption, dystocia, retained placenta, reduced milk production, and reduced semen quality. Selenium and vitamin E also play key roles in the normal immune response. DOSAGE AND TARGET SPECIES Poultry, swine, cattle, sheep and goats: 0.5 – 1 ml / litre of drinking water for 5 - 7 days. Laying hens: 0.5 ml / litre of drinking water for 5 to 7 days. Broiler pullets (prevention): 0.1 ml / litre of drinking water for 5 - 7 days. Broiler pullets (shock dose): 0.25 – 0.5 ml / litre of drinking water for 5 - 7 days. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE Oral route in drinking water. Shake well before use. WITHDRAWAL PERIOD Not required. Vitamin E is the most effective chain breaking lipid-soluble antioxidant in the biological membrane. It contributes to membrane activity, protecting critical cellular structures against damage from oxygen free radicals.

Selenium is an essential trace mineral whose principal function is to inhibit the oxidation of lipids (fats). It is a vital antioxidant, especially when combined with Vitamin E and protects the immune system by preventing the formation of free radicals.

Selenium and Vitamin E act synergistically to aid in the production of antibodies and help maintain a healthy heart and liver.

Optimum levels of Vitamin E and Selenium help support muscular functions and boost animal’s immune response.

PROPERTIES

Protects against celular oxidationVitamin E is a fat-soluble intracellular antioxidant, involved in stabilizing unsaturated fatty acids. The main antioxidant property is preventing formation of toxic free radicals and oxidation of the unsaturated fatty acids in the body. These free radicals can be formed in periods of disease or stress in the body. Selenium is a component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which plays an important role in protection of cells by destroying oxidizing agents like free radicals and oxidated unsaturated fatty acids.

Glutathione Peroxidase, or GSH-Px, is essential for protecting cellular membranes from being destroyed. The radicals are highly reactive molecules, and if left unchecked. Vitamin E and GSH-Px are two molecules that help prevent this damage. Vitamin E prevents the dangerous molecules (peroxides) from being formed, but even with adequate vitamin E, some peroxides evade destruction. GSH-Px destroys the peroxides before they have a chance to cause membrane damage. GSH-Px concentration and activity is directly related to the selenium status of the animal. Selenium and vitamin E are both antioxidants because they both protect the membranes from oxidative damage.

There are many diseases that affect the target species, but there is one disease that is consistent in all livestock species, and that is Nutritional Muscular Dystrophy, or White Muscle Disease (WMD). Nutritional muscular dystrophy is caused by the deficiency of Selenium and/or Vitamin E. The disease is characterized by degeneration of the skeletal muscles, causing stiff gaits, and other problems.

Possible symptoms in affected animals

Poultry: Exudative diathesis (accumulation of fluid throughout the body, particularly in the abdomen and feet), nutritional muscular dystrophy, pancreatic atrophy

Swine: Dietary hepatitis (degeneration of the liver), mulberry heart disease and nutritional muscular dystrophy. Pigs are also more susceptible to swine dysentery when selenium deficient

Cattle: White muscle disease (WMD), retained placenta, insufficient weight, cystic ovarian disease and anaemia

Horses: Anorexia, emaciation, generalized muscle weakness, rapid heart rate, and diarrhoea

Selenium, which is nutritionally essential for animals, is a constituent of more than two dozen selenoproteins that play critical roles in reproduction.

Vitamin E and selenium together have protective and beneficial effects on semen quality.

Selenium protects fatty acids from oxidizing. Sperm are mainly composed of essential fatty acids.

Essential fatty acids can easily oxidize and become rancid. For sperm this means abnormal sperm parameters leading to infertility.

Selenium is also needed for production of testosterone. When selenium levels are low, sperm are immobile because the tail is weakened or deformed.
