Note from the APS Publisher

It is a great pleasure to present the 2017 APS Journals Catalog, which highlights the complete range of scholarly publications produced by the American Physical Society (APS). As in previous years, the internationally renowned APS portfolio leads physics publishing in quality, breadth, and depth of coverage, making APS the world’s premier scientific society publisher. Physical Review Letters, Physical Review X, and the Physical Review series publish high-impact, innovative, original research, while Reviews of Modern Physics continues to set the standard for comprehensive, in-depth, and authoritative reviews in all areas of physics.

The 2017 catalog introduces a number of important developments of the APS journal portfolio. The first is the launch of Physical Review Fluids in May 2016, a

new online-only journal devoted to the publication of high-quality, innovative research in fluid dynamics. This latest addition to the Physical Review family shares the same values of quality, timeliness, and service to the community that authors, readers, and subscribers have come to expect from the APS journals and is endorsed by the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics.

Another important development involves Physical Review Applied, APS’s journal dedicated to publishing research at the intersection of physics and engineering. This year, Physical Review Applied received its initial Impact Factor of 4.061 for

the citations its 2014 articles received in 2015. While acknowledging that Impact Factors are only one measure of a journal’s quality and influence, this strong debut is a very positive endorsement by the community that puts a society-based journal into a leading position in applied physics.

Finally, the 2017 catalog contains two rebranded titles: Physical Review Accelerators and Beams and Physical Review Physics Education Research. Removing Special Topics from their titles reflects their status as full members of the Physical Review journals family. Both journals are online-only gold open access, and along with Physical Review X, make up APS’s fully open access portfolio.

The APS journals are more than a record of the best international physics research, they embody the Society’s mission of “the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics.” This commitment to serving the scientific research community continues to be the driving force behind APS and its world-class journal portfolio.

KaleidoscopeMany Physical Review articles contain images that are both scientifically important and visually appealing. A selection of these images appears in Kaleidoscope to promote interest in the aesthetics of physics. Images are selected solely for their artistic appeal. Images from recently published papers appear on individual journal home pages and in an online archive.

Creative Commons

Authors in most Physical Review journals may pay an article-processing charge whereby their accepted manuscripts are available barrier-free and open access on publication. These manuscripts are published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC-BY), the most permissive of the CC licenses, granting authors and others the right to copy, distribute, transmit, and adapt the work, provided that proper credit is given. This alternative is in addition to traditional subscription-funded publication; authors may choose one or the other for their accepted papers.

Abstracting and IndexingAPS journals are abstracted and indexed by Chemical Abstracting Service, Google Scholar, INSPEC, INSPIRE, Medline, NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS), PubMed, Scopus, and Thomson Reuters Web of Science.


Reuse and PermissionsAPS works with Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) for reuse and permission requests from APS-copyrighted articles. The process is automated through the CCC RightsLink system and most requests are granted immediately with the APS terms and conditions. As a guidelines signatory, APS will also continue to support the STM Association permission guidelines for all copyright needs. To request permission to republish APS-copyrighted material, please refer to the “Reuse & Permissions” link that can be found on each APS article page.

APS produces a PDF collection of all articles published each year for institutional subscribers that want to maintain electronic copies of their subscriptions on their own servers as a permanent record (“electronic shelving”). The files, distributed on CD-ROMS, can be mounted on your institution’s local server and made accessible using standard internet browsers. See page 28 for additional details and pricing.

Giving Credit to Your LibraryUsers accessing APS journals and PROLA content via an institutional subscription can now see a message on each abstract page informing them that access is through their paid library subscription. The name of the library is featured as part of the message. If the library name printed in the message is incorrect, you can either change the display name through the librarian portal or request a change by sending an email to [email protected]. Please include your institutional account number, the account administrator’s email address, and the preferred online display name.

IP PolicyAPS online institutional subscribers are recognized and authorized by their Internet Protocol (IP) address. APS will only accept IP ranges owned by the subscriber or that are for the sole use of the subscriber. APS does not allow IP sharing across multiple institutions or accounts. If an IP is submitted in conflict with a pre-existing IP address in the APS system, both institutions will be notified to resolve the conflict. 2017 CD-ROM PricesEach APS Journal CD-ROM is a hybrid HTML/PDF CD-ROM that allows for “electronic shelving” of that journal. The discs contain PDFs of the year’s journals to allow the transfer of the information onto the subscribing institution’s server, thus “shelving” the information contained in the printed journals. The disc is the functional equivalent of a bound volume. This product provides the opportunity for users to secure their own archival copy of the annual issues.

The root directory contains an HTML document that links to each issue’s table of contents, also in HTML format. Each issue has its own directory, which includes the HTML table of contents and PDF files of the articles. These files may be read with any conventional web browser and appropriate PDF viewer (such as Adobe Reader).

Access is limited subject to the terms and conditions set forth by the current journal subscription. APS online journals and their content, including abstracts, are copyrighted by the APS and are subject to all applicable copyright, database protection, and other rights of the APS as copyright owner and publisher under the laws of the United States and other countries.
