Roosevelt April/May Newsletter Building a Foundation for Life A Message from the Principal Thank you for your support of your child's education during parent/teacher conferences. We had approximately 92 percent participation, which is excellent but not perfect. Our goal is and always has been 100 percent attendance. We will continue to work towards that goal as we know that parental support is crucial to success in education. The conferences that did not take place are scheduled to occur shortly. We are coming to the end of the school year. The end of the year is always a difficult time for middle school students. We will continue to monitor student behavior through our behavior incentive plan and weekly grade reports. Please encourage your child to stay focused and continue to work hard, as there is a month and half of school remaining. The fourth quarter is a difficult quarter as students eye the end of the school year, and the desire to do the right thing sometimes goes by the wayside. The courage to do the right thing is difficult to do, but it is essential to keep us on the right track. The pillars we have discussed this year have helped our students understand importance of these values in life. At the end of the year students will have a gained a further understanding of Respect, Honesty, Responsibility/Accountability, Courage, and Integrity. We hope that students apply these values in their lives. The end of April and throughout the month of May will be very busy with school events, trips, and other class related activities. Please be sure to look at the dates of interest on the last page of this newsletter for more information. ***Please note that students will not be allowed to attend field trips if they do not have 350 incentive points and a grade point average of 2.0. Any student who has two F's will not be allowed to attend as well. Middle School Athletics We have 40 students out for middle school track, and Mrs. Schrowe feels that students are having a lot of fun this year in track. They are anxiously awaiting their meet in Columbus this Thursday. Great job students and Mr. and Mrs. Schrowe! I am excited to hear about your performances. Columbus 9:00 May 8 District 4B MS Meet Skyview 9:00 We would like to thank students, parents, and coaches for all their support and work throughout the school year in all of our activities. Big Sky Fit Kids Did you know that 20 years ago, 5 percent of American children were overweight? Today 15 percent are and another 15 percent are headed that way. Montana is no exception. Statewide, across all age groups, obesity increased from 9 percent of the population in 1990 to 19 percent in 2001. Children and adults are consuming more calories and spending less time engaged in physical activity. Overweight and obesity substantially raise the risk of illness from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and other diseases. Being overweight in childhood and adolescence is a predictor for obesity in adulthood. Physical activity is a key factor in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. For school children, exercise is associated with improved academic progress and reduced anxiety, depression, and disruptive behavior. Children and teens need at least 60 minutes of moderate-to- vigorous physical activity every day of the week. To emphasize the need for physical activity and exercise and to promote wellness, the students at Roosevelt Middle School will participate in Big Sky Fit Kids Day. We will be completing our annual service projects on May 5 th from 2:00-3:15 in various parts of Red Lodge 3 rd Quarter Straight A Students Last quarter we had 12 students receive Straight A's. As a school, we are very proud of their achievements. It takes commitment, responsibility, and work ethic to achieve those grades. We will have our quarterly Straight A pizza party the week of April 14-18. We're very excited for these students. Great job Wayne Broom, Shandy Castellani, Riki Poore, Jesse Broom, Lillian Fouts, Shaye Salt, Ava Graham, Jay Graham, Alex Thuesen, Barla Beaudoin, Molly Schmidt, and Coy Wickens! Art’s Guild Results – Mrs. Jones March was a special month of art for many of our young artists. Student art was displayed at the Carbon County Arts Guild for the annual student show. This year, special honors went to Lindsay Bauman and Molly Schmidt. It was very exciting to see such a variety of creative projects and the talent expressed by our youth. We are so fortunate to live in a community where the arts are alive and nurtured in our youth.

Roosevelt Health Walk

It’s that time of year again. We will be taking our annual school hike up to Silver Run or the BRTA walking trail up by the airport. It has been a lot of fun for our students and staff in the past and I hope for the same results this year. The hike is part of health enhancement program and it has been an excellent fitness day for our entire school. This year’s walk will take place on May 22 from 1:00-3:00. Please remind your son/daughter to wear the appropriate clothing for the hike. Students are also encouraged to bring a bottle of water as it is a decent workout.

Red Lodge Schools

Takes 1st in Montana Green School Challenge

Kryn Dykema, Katie Nell, Liam Gildehaus, Tucker Kane, Sarah Lauf, and Maya Little-Proeller,

as well as science teachers Kate Belinda and Pamela Nell, were recognized at Montana Tech in Butte on Friday, March 21st, for their efforts to “green” our Red Lodge School sporting events and raise community awareness about sustainability.

As a result of the students' efforts, they received first place in the Montana Green Schools Challenge, a contest organized by the Montana Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council to encourage schools to develop creative ways to reduce their environmental impact. As a first place project winner, the Red Lodge Green Team received a plaque and a cash award of $650.00 to ensure the continuation of the program.

Kryn, Katie, Liam, Tucker, Sarah, and Maya had previously presented their efforts to institute the reusable Rams cups and reduce recyclable waste at the Harvesting Clean Energy Conference in Helena on February 5th and 6th

of this year.

Freshman Orientation Please be sure to attend the high school’s annual freshman orientation on May 12 at 6:00 p.m. We will be sending out information in the coming weeks with more detail. The orientation is an excellent time to meet staff, ask questions, and learn more about the high school in general. Please be sure to attend both students and parents.
