GENERAL SPORT NEWS  Sport has been happening, not only outside the school, but also right here at Wallsend Campus.  

Year  10  Rugby  League  Studies  class  hosted  “Wallsend  Does  The Commonwealth Games” at the end of Tem 1. 

Lunch Time Competitions have been in full swing with students and teachers competing in a variety of sports for the ultimate champion title.  Congratulations  to  the  following  teams  who  have  been  the overall winners for the following sports.

Volleyball ‐ Ventilation 

3 on 3 Basketball is currently running during breaks and following this competition will be Cage Soccer and Indoor Soccer. 

Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 participated in the annual House v House I on the 25th of May. They competed in a number of sports including Soccer, End Zone, Ultimate Frisbee, Oz Tag and Volleyball to gain points to add to the overall  house  cup  total.  Thank  you  to  the  Sports  Committee  for  your exceptional assistance in the setup of the event and for the incorporation of two new  sports  this  year.  Congratulations  to Willis who were  the overall winners for House v House I.

SPORTS PEOPLE OF THE MONTH           

  

AFL BOYS U/16s 9s TOURNAMENT: Congratulations to the outstanding Year 9 and 10 boys that were selected to represent the campus at the AFL 9’s tournament at Waratah Oval on Tuesday 3 April. The boys picked up the very different set of rules very quickly from watching and playing their first game.  

A  great  team  effort  across  the  park  from  the  boys. Standout with a number of screaming contested marks was Cooper Garrett, who also converted the front half marks into goals. Cody Heywood was rock solid all day in the fullback position, whilst Jacob Findlay and Jack Smith  worked  hard  and  got  a  number  of  tough contested  positions  in  the  middle  all  day.  The  boys were undefeated and made the Grand Final against a towering  St.  Pius  team.  Corey  Slingo  made  a  great captain’s call late in the game by moving Aidan Storrie forward where he kicked two quick goals to take the boys within one goal. Unfortunately, time defeated our resurgence.  

Congratulations  to  all  the  boys  on  a  successful  and enjoyable day. Thanks also to the parents who helped out and supported the boys on the day!

U/15s AND OPEN GIRLS   On a stinking hot autumn day, 27 girls from CCWC went  on  a  sporting  adventure  to  Teralba  to compete  in  a  Girls  only  AFL  gala  day.  AFL  was quite  foreign  to  the majority of both  teams but none‐the‐less,  they went out and gave  it a go – and boy were they on fire! 

The under 15s started out shy and a little unsure, but  within  a  few  minutes  they  had  their  first point.  Marnie  Robinson  and  Ebony  Woodcock then came through with the goods, each scoring a  goal  and  the  game  ended  on  a  tie  with

Newcastle High. In their second game their confidence came out and a 38 to 1 win with Marnie, Jasmine, Ebony and Hayley all finding the goals.  In their last game, the girls had it in the bag in the first half, then St Pius came back in the second. However, they didn’t have enough to take over and CCWC came through with a 25 to 22 win. A shining game seeing Berikah, Jasmine and Marnie all score 6 points. 

The Open Girls Team also started a bit timid, but quickly fastened their pace. With some beautiful marks and some great kicks the girls were close but lost by 1 point to Newcastle High. The game saw some great skills by Sonniah and Skarlett. Game 2 against Swansea High School saw CCWC go for gold and Olivia Robinson shining all the way home. The third and final game was not our best, but not once did the girls give in! 

Miss Wilson and Miss Ray are extremely proud of the way the girls conducted themselves on the day and their effort and willingness to try a sport that is often a bit confusing. 

Our U/15s team finished in a brilliant 3rd place overall and the Open Girls came a great 4th. We look forward to next year!

 FUTSAL U/14 & U/16 BOYS REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The  Regional  Futsal  Championships  were  held  at  Howzat  on Monday 21 May. The U/14s team defeated St Joseph’s Aberdeen and Kotara High School to progress through to the semi‐finals. We faced  our  nemesis  St  Pius  in  the  semi‐finals  who  ran  out convincing  winners.  This  team  will  give  the  competition  a  big shake up next year as most players were in the U/12 and U/13 age groups.

The U/16s team went into the competition full of confidence and were expecting big things ‐ they did not fail to deliver. They easily topped  their  pool  defeating  Newcastle  Grammar  and  Toronto High School. They faced Kotara High School (2) in the semi‐finals in a nail biting affair, which saw extra time golden goal employed. Matt Berrigan was our saviour scoring the goal to put us into the final, facing Kotara High School (1). We unfortunately suffered a few injuries which made it hard for us to compete with a red hot Kotara team.

Mr Brenden Kelana Boys Futsal Coach  REGIONAL GIRLS FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The U/14 and U/16 girls competed at the Regional Futsal Championships at Howzat. Both teams played extremely well and dominated all  their pool games. Both teams topped their pools and qualified first  in their 

 

pools.  The  U/14  team went  through  the  tournament  undefeated  and beat Newcastle HS 5‐3 in the final. The U/16 team were defeated 3‐2 in the final by St Pius, but they did secure a spot in the State Finals.

Mr Brenden Kelana Girls Futsal Coach  LAWN BOWLS Lachlan  Evans,  Max  Burrell  and  Ben  Jolley  travelled  to  Bulahdelah  on Friday 25 May to compete in the Lawn Bowls HSSA Championships.  

The boys were the winners of their pool and progressed to the semi‐finals. Unfortunately, they lost the semi‐final but should be very proud of their effort and sportsmanship throughout the day. 

Congratulations to Lachlan Evans who has been selected for the Hunter team. Great achievement, Lachlan!

RUGBY LEAGUE U14’s BUCKLEY SHIELD On  Tuesday  10 April  the  U14s  Boys  Buckley  Shield team competed in a gala day at Windale. The team won  3  games  against  Kotara,  Newcastle  and  Lake Munmorah,  with  one  loss  against  Belmont  High. From  these  results  the  team  finished  2nd in  their respective  pool  and  progressed  through  to  the Hunter Region Super 8’s final on Wednesday 2 May. Congratulations to Noah Iles who was voted Player’s Player.  Other  standout  performers  were  Taison Williamson, Preston Conn & Banjo Davies. 

The team upset Hunter River High 12‐4 in the Hunter Region quarter final, then went on to defeat a very strong Rutherford team in the Hunter Region Semi Final 22 ‐ 12.

The team contested the Hunter Region Buckley Shield Grand Final at Grange Oval Maryland. The boys were defeated 14 ‐ 12 by a very strong Warners Bay High School team. Standout performers were Preston Conn, Noah Iles (2 tries), Mika Stewart and Jacob West. 

We will now progress through to the NSWCHS final 20 knockout stage and play away against a high school from Goulburn (Mulwaree High School) on Tuesday 19 June.

U/14s & U/16s KNIGHTS KNOCKOUT  Both  teams  had  two new  coaches  to  run  them  through their  games  for  this  Knockout  and  students  were  well organised to manage this change. 

U/14s had Kotara forfeit their first game, a  loss and two wins. The  loss was unfortunate, as  the boys played well throughout  the  day  and  with  a  little more  time  on  the clock could have come up with the win.

U/16s only had 12 players available but were competitive in all their games with limited players available. They came away with a draw, a win and 2 losses.

 SOCCER BOYS BILL TURNER CUP Our  first  round  opponents  were  Macquarie  College.  We went into the game with a few key players missing and an injury to Blake Carter which would make our job much more difficult. 

We  started  the  game  well  which  saw  us  dominate  the midfield  through  the  hard work  of Mason  King  and Matt Berrigan. We created some great chances which Ahmed Ali was nearly able to capitalise on. Ahmed Ali scored a great goal thanks to a great through ball from Thomas Tattersall. Unfortunately, Macquarie College made the most of their chances and won 2‐1. The team played extremely well and should go into next year’s competition full of confidence.

Mr Brenden Kelana Boys Soccer Coach 

 GIRLS BILL TURNER CUP ROUND 1 v CARDIFF HIGH SCHOOL   Two very competitive sides battled on an extremely hot day at CC Wallsend Ovals. Both teams had good opportunities to score;  however,  it was  a  great  defensive  effort  from  Tori Johnson which allowed her to put the ball in the far bottom corner to have CCWC leading at half time 1‐0.  

 

The girls were playing and communicating well and this was reflected in their opening 5 minutes of the second half 

 

with Eloise Metcalfe controlling the midfield and Jorja Brown causing havoc down the right flank. 

It was Jorja Brown down the right flank, coupled with a tremendous cross that saw Tori Johnson score a double in what was a great team goal 8 minutes into the second half. 

CC Wallsend played very well in the second half to close the match, coming out winners 2‐0. 

Coach's award: Eloise Metcalfe.  ROUND 2 v KOTARA HS  CC Wallsend defeated Kotara High School 4 ‐ 1. Goal scorers were Jayde Platford (2), Tiahna Skelton and Tori Johnson at Lugar Park, Kotara South. 

Our girls played extremely well on a rock hard pitch, dominating Kotara for the majority of the game. The  girls  played  well  technically,  creating  numerous  chances through  great  build  up  from  the backline through to the midfield. 

Coach's award: Jayde Platford.  ROUND 3 v St PHILLIPS WARATAH CC Wallsend defeated St Phillips Waratah 4 ‐ 0. Jorja Brown scored 2 goals, with Caitlyn Dzananovic and Eloise Metcalfe scoring one goal each. It was a cold, wet and very windy morning at Smith Park, Hamilton North. 

The score could have easily hit double figures for our girls, however our shooting "radar" wasn't on during this game. That said, the girls again dominated in extremely tough conditions to completely outplay their opposition and were never threatened. 

We now play an extremely strong and talented Hunter Sports High School in the Newcastle/Lake Macquarie Regional Semi‐Final. This will be a great experience for our girls and we look forward to the challenge ahead.

Mr Michael Psarris Girls Soccer Coach  

SOFTBALL Good  news  from  the  Girls  Open  Knockout  Softball  at  Stevenson  Park.  Our  combined  Callaghan College Girls Softball team has progressed to the CHS State Finals after defeating Merewether High School  17‐1,  and having  a  6  all  draw with Hunter  Sports High  School. On  a  count  back  average Callaghan College were declared the last Hunter team into the state finals.  

Lots of fun, courage, skill development and professionalism were on display by the girls. Beautiful team work and performance by all of our girls and relentless pitching and catching accuracy by Olivia Moore and Jessie Bakewell. 

Our team consisted of: Olivia Moore (C), Jessie Bakewell, Kyeisha Beale, Sophie Henderson, Charlie Little, Maddison McGuigan, Leili Mohu, Ella Moriarty, Carla Noble, Alexis Powell, Alex Tagaroulias,  Sonniah Waiyo and  Kyah Waters.  

Well  done  girls  ‐  we  are  extremely  proud  of  your efforts. Thanks  to Helen Greentree, Danielle Moore, Michael Nixon and Susie Henderson for their support of the team.

TENNIS OPEN GIRLS KNOCKOUT TENNIS  On Monday 21 May, Ava Darby, Mikayla Harrod, Olivia Moore and Lily  Spooner  played  Round  2  of  the  Girl  State  Knockout  Tennis Competition  against  Maitland  Grossman  High  School.  The  girls played singles matches followed by doubles, coming away with a convincing win. This put the team through to the Round 3, 4 and 5 Gala Day at District Park Tennis Club on Wednesday 23 May. 

In Round 3  the  team met a very experienced Whitebridge High School  team  consisting mostly  of  Year  11  &  12  students.  They played  singles  matches,  followed  by  doubles  then  reverse doubles. Unfortunately, the girls lost this round but were excellent representatives for CCWC.

 TOUCH BOYS 9/10 ALL SCHOOLS KNOCKOUT The Year 9 and 10 boys touch team competed at the Year 9 and 10 NSW All Schools Knockout at Newcastle City Touch Fields on Friday 6 April 2018. 

The team was successful  in winning their first 5 pool games and moved  into  the quarter  finals with  their  comprehensive efforts. The semi‐final against Tomaree (Nelson Bay) was always going to be a challenge and the boys were defeated 3‐1. 

There were some outstanding performances from Jack Smith and Aidan Storrie who led from the front but the rookie touch players, including  Jake  Borrowdale,  Jacob  Findley  and  Bailey  Chapman, showed some real promise. 

Mr Nathan Jones Boys Touch Coach  GIRLS 9/10 ALL SCHOOLS KNOCKOUT The CCWC Year 9 and 10 girls touch team competed at the All Schools event on Friday 6th April. The girls started the day with a 4‐0 win against Wyong High School. This game was followed by a very close game against St Pius X High School who had most of the possession but could not penetrate the girl’s outstanding defence. Late in the game, through great teamwork, the girls scored a try and the game finished 1‐0. The next game in our pool was against Maitland Grossman HS. The girls came out firing and scored a quick try to start the game. Again the girls displayed outstanding defence throughout the game and the end result was 3‐0.  

As the girls were at the top of the pool, we had another game in the pool round against  the  team coming  fourth.  This meant we were up against Wyong  again.  CCWC again  played well  and  finished  the  game  3‐1.  This meant the girls finished top of the pool, undefeated, and progressed to the quarter finals where they met St Joseph's Aberdeen.  

CCWC scored the first try but St Joseph's fired back with 2 quick tries. The girls played well and broke through for a late try making it a draw at full time. This  meant  the  girls  had  to  play  drop  off.  The  girls  again  played 

 

brilliantly throughout drop off and with only 3 girls left on each team, Tiahna managed to streak away for the winning try. 

This meant CCWC progressed to the semi‐finals where we met St  Jospeh's Central Coast. The St Joseph's team started well and after many attempts penetrated our defence and scored a try. The girls played well but could not find their momentum and went down 2‐0. 

The girls played with great spirit and determination, worked extremely well as a team and supported and encouraged each other throughout the day. The team consisted of: Sarah Del Bianco, Skarlett Eastman,  Jayde  Platford,  Tiahna  Skelton,  Lily  Spooner,  Sonniah  Waiyo,  Kyah  Watters,  Olivia Whitcher, Ebony Woodcock, Paige Worley and Taylor Worley.  

While all players gave their best in each and every game, Kyah Watters was superb throughout the day and receives the Coach's award. 

Mrs Amanda Phillips Girls Touch Coach   WALLSEND CAMPUS DOES THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES Mr Johnson’s Year 10 Rugby League studies class hosted a Commonwealth Games themed Gala Day on Monday 9 April as part of  their Event Management Assessment Task. One hundred and forty students represented sixteen Commonwealth countries and competed  in two tiers throughout 8 sports. The students were encouraged to wear their respective Country colours.  

The event was extremely successful and definitely provided an authentic experience for the Year 10 students in regards to organising a large school‐based event.  

Congratulations to India who were crowned champions of the day.  

Special  mention  to  the  Kenyan  and  Malaysian  teams  for  their outstanding national pride in their costumes.  

Another brilliant sporting initiative at Wallsend Campus.

CONGRATULATIONS LACHLAN TRESSIDER Lachlan  has  been  competing  in  Barefoot  Water‐ski Tournaments  and  recently  competed  at  the  National Championships. He did really well with a 6th place overall after being in the sport for 6 months. 

More importantly, his potential was noticed and he has been chosen in the Australian Junior Team to compete at the 2020 World Championships.  

Congratulations, Lachlan!
