The Promise of Spring and Easter by Pastor June Wilkins

For everything there is a season, and a time for every

matter under heaven. -- Ecclesiastes 3:1

Wow! That was a cold and snowy winter. As I’m

writing this there’s another snow storm and cold front

blowing through with temperatures in the single

digits. I hope as you are reading this we’re back up

above freezing!

At the end of the winter, especially a hard winter like

we’re in, you can almost feel the anticipation of spring

and the new life that it brings with it. Imagine how

good the anticipation would be if we were living in a

time or place where there was no heat or lights and

the winter food storage was running low!

I love that the approach of spring coincides with the

approach of Easter. Just when we’re anticipating new

life and resurrection in nature, we are also

anticipating new life and resurrection in our Church

and worship. (Of course, it’s the opposite in the

Southern Hemisphere, but it works for us here!)

Our worship in Holy Week takes us through these

changes quickly, the gathering of Maundy Thursday,

the hopelessness of death of Good Friday, the

anticipation of a new light of Easter Vigil, and the

excitement and promise of Jesus’ resurrection on

Easter.

As you watch the world around us change and come

alive again and experience the cycle of life, always

remember the new life Easter! Remember the

promise that both of those realities bring: even after a

terrible winter, there is always resurrection. There is

always hope!

Pr. June

Please welcome Pr. Ipyana and his family to Colum-

bus. Pr. Ipyana has been appointed by the Southern

Ohio Synod to be the mission developer pastor for the

Swahili congregation, Ibada Ya Kiswahili. The last

weekend in March, Pr. Ipyana Mwakabonga, his wife

Stella and his son Samuel will move to Columbus from

Philadelphia. He begins work the first week in April.

He will also work as the youth and outreach director

at Ascension Lutheran Church on Morse Road. He will

have an office here at Gethsemane, so if you see him

around, make sure you welcome him to Columbus and

to Gethsemane!

FOOD PANTRYFOOD PANTRYFOOD PANTRYFOOD PANTRY

Gethsemane is

starting a food

pantry here which

will serve the

community around

us! Clintonville-

Beechwold

Resources Center

would like to expand their services so we will partner

with them to make their dream a reality. Fifteen

percent of CRC’s clients come from Broad Meadows

Boulevard (which is right across High Street from us.)

By having an annex here at Gethsemane it will be

easier for people who are taking the bus down to the

CRC food pantry on Lakeview Avenue and it will open

us up to our community at the same time.

We have assembled a team to work on this project:

Dave Kulikowski, Jane Sieberth, Mark Hagerdorn, Terri

Siebert, Barbara Ford, Wendy Luedke, Cindy Keller,

and Bethany Keller.

The Clintonville-Beechwold Resources Center will

provide us with all the food, a staff person, and

training. We will provide the space, hospitality, and

volunteers! There are also two other churches who

are interested in volunteering at the pantry.

For our food storage, we plan to use the

quilting/prayer shawl storage room in the Multi-

Purpose Room where we currently keep the tables

and chairs for adult education. We have been working

this month on cleaning that space out and fixing it up.

The quilt supplies, tables and chairs and other things

will be put in with the choir music files which are in

the room on the other side of the Multi-Purpose

Room. The whole staff and properties team are in on

the project and are working hard to make this

happen!

We plan to have the food pantry open Wednesday

nights from 6:00pm-8:30pm and Saturday mornings

11:00am-2:00pm. Our goal is to start the food pantry

on Wednesday, May 14.

Soon, we will ask the congregation for help with

moving shelves, food, and of course, to sign up to

volunteer.

On Palm Sunday, April 13, during the Adult

Education hour, the Food Pantry Team and

Congregation Council will have a discussion

with the congregation about the details of

this upcoming ministry. We are excited about

serving our community and about the new

relationships that will develop as we invite

our neighbors into our lives!

Highlights of Council Meeting – March 20, 2014

A copy of the Council minutes and Financial Report is posted in Atrium Way.

PLEASE READ BUT LEAVE POSTED. Take home copies (minus attachments) are available

at the Sign Up Desk in the narthex.

PASTOR’S REPORT

Gethsemane is working with Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources

Center to set up a food pantry in the north storage room off the Multi-Purpose

Room on the lower level. Details of the process were reviewed so Council can

share information about the project with the congregation and accurately

respond to questions.

Highlights are:

1. A team was formed with the approval of Council to work on the project.

The team includes representatives of Council, Staff, Outreach, Mission

and Ministry, and Quilting Ministry. Building expertise and planning

expertise were considered as well in setting up the team.

2. Target date for starting the food pantry is May 14, 2014. The Food Pantry

will be open on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays (not to conflict with

Play & Learn.

3. Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources Center is stocking the

pantry in conjunction with Mid-Ohio Food Bank. They will have a social

worker on site during pantry hours and will coordinate training

volunteers.

4. Other churches in the area are interested in participating as volunteers

(Maple Grove Methodist and Beechwold Christian Church).

A session for discussion of the project with the congregation will be held Sunday

April 13th after church (no education hour that Sunday).

Further work on visioning is postponed to the April meeting.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Contributions for February were slightly under budget, however, the budget

predicts February to be a month of above average contributions. Overall,

expenditures remain in line with contributions largely due to lower than

budgeted expenditures.

Initial discussion of the budget planning for next year focused on ideas for

maintaining current budget levels if we have less income. continued
