I have included a recipe for citrus vinaigrette in this month’s article; the flavor is bright and lively. My thought is if winter will not leave at least we can throw rocks at it.

The Farm Bureau agricultural meeting put end users with Virginia suppliers. It was done in a walk around style where the end users were at tables and the farmers ‘speed dated’ us as they went table to table. Questions included: lead time for production, what we wanted to see farmed, how much product we could use and how often we could use it. We tried to get a handle on what they believed to be sustainable, all natural and organic and how this impacts production time and quantities. I came away realizing that I could tap into this resource, but there would be a real learning curve. The biggest thing I have to overcome is production amounts, only so many animals are available, so many pounds of a vegetable, or so much dairy product. This type of supply seems to fit in much better with a smaller operation or, in a venue the size of Hermitage, in a specific area of use. We already do some of this with Hanover tomatoes, Virginia rockfish, Carolina flounder and the regional gold standard, Maryland blue crabs. I am trying to fit in some more of the meats and cheeses; we will see how that goes.

This leads me into a new dinning option we are going to launch this month. In this newsletter you will find a menu for a Chef’s table dinner. This will provide me with a place to use some of these products at a function with a small number of diners.

By the time you read this Easter will be behind us, and Mother’s day will be soon upon us; please make your reservations.

Once again the Golf Pro Shop Staff will conduct its annual Pre-Season Ladies’ Clinic. The dates will be March 26th through the 29th.

The clinic will consist of four one and a half hour sessions, and will concentrate on the game’s basic fundamentals. Some of the basics will include the grip, set-up routine, swing thoughts, and one session will be committed solely to the short game (chipping and putting).

The clinic is an ideal opportunity for beginners and novice players to get a better understanding of the game in general; yet it would also benefit more advanced players who struggle getting their game back in gear at the beginning of the season. The cost of the clinic is $70.00.

YOGA AND THAI MASSAGE FOR GOLF

Improve the distance, accuracy and consistency of your swing with these additional programs to enhance your Golf Conditioning at the Fitness Center: Yoga for Golf Performance, Core and Flex, One-on-one Flexibility and Core Training, and Thai Massage.

The two basic components for conditioning will improve your golf fitness and reduce your risk of injury:

Mobility and Stability

Exercises for stability and mobility are essential for all golfers, with mobility being established before strengthening for stability, although mobility without stability equals vulnerability. Obviously with physical movement & exercise, there is a fine line between enhancing these two components, and injury. Mobility is the combination of normal joint range of motion and muscle flexibility. Take advantage of our Group Programs guided by a Certified Instructor to direct you in movements to improve your mobility and stability.

In addition, we offer one-on-one training for flexibility and core performance, with benefits from both including: flexibility, strength, balance, pain prevention, improved respiration, stress reduction and proprioception (body awareness). You will also feel stronger and more energized after your future rounds of golf.

We also provide Thai Yoga Massage to work deep into your muscles to restore lost elasticity and to reintroduce movement to restricted areas. According to the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, Thai Yoga Massage is the best massage technique to lessen muscle stiffness and reduce muscle fatigue by increasing joint mobility with the stimulation of joint lubrication, as well as other advantages that it provides.

So, go like a pro and put some mobility in your game. Call or come by the Fitness Center and meet Jami, our resident flexibility expert, or check class sched-ules for more details.

The annual cocktail party to kick off the season was held at Barbara Parker's home. A great time was had by everyone. Thank you Barb for your hospitality. The first play date was scheduled for March 26th. Due to snow the golfing was canceled. The first meeting was held however, followed by a buffet lunch. There are a few changes for the group. The hole-in-one charge has been increased to a one time fee of $5.00. The money will then be divided, at the end on the season, equally among those who achieved a hole-in- one. You must have a witness and be playing at Hermitage Country Club. Deadline to enroll is April 15. Shirley Parker has last years list if you need to know if you owe $2.00 or $5.00. Plans are under way for the Member-Guest. This year it will be held on Friday, the 13th of September. There will be competitions for you and your partner on the 12th with a cocktail party to follow at Hermitage. Practice rounds will also be possible. Keep watching the Winds as more plans unfold. Ellen Shalley and Sylvia Bearer are in charge this year and will be happy to answer any questions. Big Break groups have been established. PROS CORNER

Think Wide with Wedges

When practicing with your wedges it is important to understand a few key ingredients in hitting consistent, solid shots. First and probably most essential is being conscious of your ball position within your stance when setting up to hit the shot. In selecting the proper club for the shot you should try keeping your ball position as consistent as possible within your stance. After determining the proper ball position, be sure you select the club that will allow you to hit the shot you want with the proper trajectory, spin and roll.

Example: If your ball is just off the front of the green and you must chip the ball the entire length of the green to a flagstick that is positioned towards the very back of the green. For this scenario you would need a club that, when striking the ball, would allow just enough air time to create enough velocity for the ball to roll towards the back of the green towards the flagstick. To accomplish this you may select a lower lofted club such as a six or seven iron to execute such a shot.

Regardless of your club selection your chipping stroke should bottom out on the ground at approximately the same position as where the ball lays. In order for this to occur the arc on which your club swings during a chip shot should always be shallower on the back swing as well as the downswing through contact. This is a short swing so try to imagine the same kind of pendulum action that you use when hitting a putt of the same distance. The images below will help you visualize the path that your selected club should take to accomplish this swing action. When the hands are too active in these types of shots they tend to steepen the swing which can cause inconsistency in how and when your clubface bottoms out and in turn can result in poor shots such as the “chili dip” or “skulled” shot. Keep your wrists firm when you chip as this will help in your chipping efforts. This practice can help your accuracy around the greens without a doubt. If you have further questions regarding this chipping fundamental please contact a member of the Golf Professional Staff so we can further assist you in your efforts to become a better chipper.

TPI GOLF FITNESS & REHABILITATION PROGRAMS

Physical Conditioning has become a big addition to the aspects of golf performance in the last 15 years. It is one of the six categories of the “hexagon of player development” which includes: Basic Instruction, Shot Making Skills, Course Management, Mental/Emotional, and Equipment. Our TPI Certified Golf Fitness Instructors are available at the Fitness Center to add that physical conditioning component to your “bag of tricks”. Through our TPI Fitness and Medical screenings, we can determine your muscle and joint capabilities and restrictions in order to help evaluate your swing limitations and prescribe exercises specific to improve mobility and stability through increased flexibility and strength. In conjunction with our Golf Professional Teaching Staff, we now can provide you with a thorough understanding of your golf game, personal swing performance, and your individual physical abilities and limitations with an exercise prescription to enhance your mobility and stability for an efficient swing. In addition, Titleist has certified Bambi Cocke as a TPI Medical Professional – your resource for help with any medical issues that may be affecting your game. Contact Bambi at 804.708.8935 or [email protected] for more information.

MASSAGE THERAPY: ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH

Massage therapy works best when you take it on a regular basis - like a workout program or good nutrition. Regular massage therapy is a preventative measure to muscle strains, tears, or injuries. Why? Because massage therapy speeds healing, lubricates joints, increases mobility and flexibility. Repeated exposure to massage therapy over time increases those benefits. This translates into a state of ever-increasing flexibility, mobility, circulation, improved athletic performance, postural alignment, and peace of mind. The bottom line is that massage therapy is not just about treating aches and pains - it's about maintaining your top physical performance and emotional well-being. We are thrilled to announce the addition of one more Certified Massage Therapist to our staff – Sherry Lalla. Sherry completes our Spa Depart-ment, and allowing us to now offer Massage appointments every day of the week! Our Thai Massage Therapist, Jami Bailey, is really staying busy. If you haven’t tried Thai Massage, you’re really missing out on an amazing experience with this talented practitioner. In April, if you purchase a twice monthly massage package, we will give you 15% off the price of each massage. Give Vicky Stratton a call or email to schedule your appointments: [email protected] or 804.784.7262

TOWEL AMNESTY

We promise to forgive – just please bring them back. If you would like to wash them first, we’ll really be forgiving! Seriously, our towels keep walking away from the Sports Center somehow, and land in our members’ cars. It happens – but if they can somehow find their way back to us, then we don’t have to keep spending funds on more. Thanks, everyone!

WITHOUT VOLUNTEERS, THE MEETS CANNOT BE RUN

Swim meets are an “All hands on deck!” event and many hands make light work for all. We ask that each family commits to support the children’s efforts by volunteering for at least one half of each meet. More really is better – volunteering makes the meet time fly by!! Sheri Word is the volunteer coordinator. Please call Sheri Word at 804.741.2221 or email [email protected] with questions or more details about any of these jobs.
