Our March demo and workshop by Andy Evansen was in my opinion the best of the year. His use of only three values for value studies prior to painting in the studio or plein air was one of the most significant bits of knowledge I have ever seen demonstrated. His value study is simplification and a roadmap to good painting. He actually only paints the midtones which must be connected into an interesting shape and then finishes with the darks. Everything else he leaves is white paper.!

In April we have one of the most famous watercolor artists in the world coming to SWS for a work-shop and a Tuesday night demo. Mark your calendars and invite your friends. This is going to be the best of the best: the incomparable Alvaro Castagnet. Alvaro is not only one of the most famous watercolorists of his time, but he also has a very charismatic and big personality. Joseph Zbukvic (another great artist) says he is the loudest man on the planet. His paintings are just incredible!!!

(Remember to buy a Raffle ticket for the May Fundraiser from Mickey Archer at the Raffle table at the April meeting.)!

The May Fundraiser is just around the corner. This fundraiser is our main source of income to put on our first class exhibition in the Eisemann Center. So please be generous and help the cause. !

Just a few days ago we sent out a SILENT AUCTION BID FORM with our constant contact email. You can download the form and make one copy for each item you wish to donate to SWS. Please indicate the minimum bid increase in even dollars. Example: bid is $5.00 not $5.25. !

! -We need items like old watercolor accessories –brushes, pallets, books and easels…any-thing related to painting.!

! -We also will need you to be there. We will have a live auction bid of some really good water-colors and of course our raffle. Be sure to buy some raffle tickets, you might win a really good paint-ing.!

! -We also accept cash donations. If you don’t have any related equipment, consider giving a cash donation. Anything helps. !

! -Raffle tickets will be on sale at our April Meeting. See Mickey Archer at the Raffle table.!

Hope to see you Tuesday “same time same place”. !

Please return your DVD’s.!

BOB VOGES SPOTLIGHT ON ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Bob Voges loves the challenge, beauty and spontaneity of transparent watercolor. His background includes a 40 year career in engineering. He holds a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master and PhD Degree in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University. His interest in watercolor painting began over 45 years ago with part time lessons while he continued his Engineering career at Texas Instruments and Raytheon. His early watercolor instruc-tors and role models were Jim Powell and Bud Biggs. Today and throughout the past 15 years he has been and is inspired and mentored by Naomi Brotherton. In addition, he has taken watercolor workshops with Edgar Whitney, Robert E. Wood, Eric Wiegardt, Ken Hosmer, Sterling Edwards and Alvaro Castagnet to name a few. He is a Signa-ture member and past President of the Southwestern Watercolor Society.! !Dr. Bob, a nickname picked up at Raytheon, is someone that the right vs. left brain theory can be seen in his engi-neering career as well as his art career. Although engineering is predominately left brain, his work in Research & Development and electromagnetic theory included a significant amount of creative and even intuitive right brain ac-tivity. His art works are representational realistic watercolors that lean toward the left brain approach. In spite of all this theory he loves the creativity of watercolor with its happy accidents, transparent beautiful washes and strong vibrant color. ! !Since his retirement in 2006 he has been painting full time. His works are primarily realistic landscapes or cityscapes. His inspiration comes from travel photographs and his recent conversion to plein air painting. Working outdoors gives him the foundation for larger works in the studio. He is striving to produce loose colorful paintings that the viewer can enjoy, while they interpret the meaning of the painting and perhaps highlight fond memories. One of his favorite quotes amplifies his art philosophy:!

!“It’s not what you look at that matters,!

It’s what you see.”!Henry David Thoreau!
