4C News

Dear Families,

I hope you are well. Students in 4C have been busily exploring in a hands-on and active way. In the last two weeks, we started our newest unit, How The World Works, and our focus has been on scientific experimentation.

The Central idea is…

Experimenting and investigating lead us to uncover how the natural world works.

The following lines of inquiry and concepts have been guiding our work:

1) classifying the scientific disciplines (form)

2) the scientific inquiry cycle (function)

3) how we apply scientific knowledge to explain how the world works (connection)

This week, we worked to conduct simple science experiments that helped us to explore chemistry.  We looked at the classic oil and water experiment, and discovered how and why the two substances do not actually create a chemical reaction.  We did a demonstration where we combined baking soda and vinegar to mimic the reaction of a volcanic explosion.  Additionally, we observed the flow of water molecules in both cold and hot water with the assistance of food dye.

Independently, students have created video logs as they attempted to make a paperclip float, utilizing surface tension in cups of water.  They have also made plastic milk with the aid of heat, vinegar and a strainer.

Throughout the unit, we have been emphasizing the scientific cycle and asking the students to create a prediction/hypothesis, to draw conclusions, and to reflect on findings.

Literacy

We have linked our scientific investigations to literacy by reading a number of books during reading groups including, Changing Materials, From Ice Cream to Milk and Chemical Reactions.  Also, we have been working on procedural writing, requiring the students to recount steps during experiments in a detailed and sequential manner.

Numeracy

In the last few weeks of school we have explored the division of fractions, including the invert-and multiply method.  A discussion of mean, median, mode and range will take us into next week, as we will explore data collection.
