Pastor’s Corner Pastor Robert Howard [email protected]

250 years! How does a church exist for 250 years? This year, 2015, marks the 250th year of

ministry for Centre Church. According to our historical records, our region of country received its first

emigrants from Pennsylvania around the decade of 1740-1750. George Davidson, from Lancaster

County, PA, settled near the ford of the creek that bears his name, north of Center Church, in 1750.

In that day the country was more open and covered with abundant grass and wild pea-vines.

Sparse timber and rolling hills made the land perfect for farming. Indians also wandered about from one

encampment, and from the ford of one river to another; and their trails furnished tracks for white emi-

grants to follow. Even herds of Buffaloes roamed over it; bears, wolves, panthers, deer and other wild

game abounded. Those early emigrants could supply themselves with fresh meat when they pleased.

Imagine what their thoughts would be today if they could see our country today.

Regardless of the changes in our nation one thing has remained the same--the Gospel of Jesus

Christ! Our need of salvation from our sinfulness has been the challenge of each generation of Ameri-

cans in the mattes of life and death. For 250 years God has given life to Centre Church in order to bear

witness to God's great love and work of the cross.

Why has Centre endured? Because God wishes it to be so. In John's vision from Revelation we

are told that each Christian fellowship is like a lampstand that is given its ability to witness to the Gospel

of Jesus Christ by the Lord Himself. "And I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And hav-

ing turned, I saw seven golden lampstands." (Revelation 1:12) Our lampstand is still burning! Our wit-

ness is still being used today by the Lord.

On September 27th we will be gathering for one service at 11:00 AM to praise and give thanks

to God that he has included us in Jesus' great family called the Church. The Session has invited Dr. Don

Fortson to lead us in hearing the Word of God as we celebrate the traditions, the history and particular

calling God has placed on us as the congregation called Centre to fulfill the ministry of Jesus Christ to-

day. I hope you'll join us for worship at 11:00 AM and a covered dish luncheon to follow. Here is some

more information about Don.

Dr. Fortson joined the faculty of RTS as Associate Professor of

Church History in 1997. Prior to RTS, he served as Assistant Professor of

Ministry and the Director of Ministry Program at Gordon-Conwell Theologi-

cal Seminary. Before his teaching career, Dr. Fortson was a pastor for nine

years; he continues his pastoral ministry through teaching, preaching in local

churches and leadership in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. In addition

to his work at RTS, he is a visiting professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological

Seminary and lectures in other venues throughout the region on church his-

tory. He holds the following degrees: Ph. D., Westminster Theological Semi-

nary, D. Min., Columbia Theological Seminary, M. Div., Columbia Theo-

logical Seminary B. A., Covenant College.

Don's published works include: Unchanging Witness: The Consistent Christian Teaching on Homo-

sexuality in Scripture and Tradition (B&H Academic, 2016), The Presbyterian Story: Origins and Pro-

gress of a Reformed Tradition (Presbyterian Lay Committee, 2013), The Presbyterian Creed: A Confes-

sional Tradition in America, 1729-1870 (Paternoster Press, 2008), Colonial Presbyterianism: Old Faith

in a New Land (Pickwick Publications Princeton Theological Monograph Series, 2007), for which he

served as general editor and contributor., Co-editor of the Westminster Larger Catechism in Modern

English (Summertown Co., 2004)

I'm looking forward to seeing you at Centre on September 27, 2015. Make sure you come.

You'll be glad you did!

If anyone has any church records, either old newspaper articles, books, photos, etc. that they would like to donate to the church, please let me know. Thank you! Shirley Wagers Email: [email protected] Tel: (704) 360-4838

We plan to have members of the Church sitting at several gravesites in the old grave-yard during the Fall Festival on October 24. They will explain to visitors the person who is buried there and what that person achieved during his/her lifetime. Priority for docents will be given to relatives of those buried, but anyone with a flair for recitation and an interest in history would be more than welcome. If you are interested, please contact Chris Brotherton, June Robb, Lee Ann Jenkins, or Russ Gavitt and please come to any or all of the meetings of the 250th Anniversary team which will be held in the Brantley Room at 7 pm on August 26, September 16 and October 14. Even if you don’t wish to be a docent, you would be welcome at any of those meetings. We have lots of activities planned at the Church this year and would welcome any help you could offer.

It was 7:00 p.m. on a Friday, and after a string of exhausting weeks,

Kathryn couldn’t wait for a long-planned and much-needed romantic

date with her husband, Josh. The kids were finally at Grandma’s house

(hallelujah!), the favorite meal was cooked, the table was set beautifully

and there were candles in the bedroom for later. But as the minutes

ticked by . . . no Josh. And no call. Finally at 7:40, a quick text: Boss

grabbed me 4 last-min client call. So sorry. By 8:30, Kathryn was trying to

hold back the tears. She found herself thinking she just wasn't a priority

for Josh, so she put away the beautifully cooked food — and the candles.

Have you ever been in Kathryn’s place in some way, thinking that your husband just doesn’t care? Or

maybe you’re a husband who tackled an all-day honey-do painting project to surprise your wife, only to

hear, “Um . . . I thought we were going to do a texture in this room.” Maybe you’ve had the angry feeling:

I just can’t do anything right for her.

It is easy to have those thoughts when we are hurt, but it is poisonous to the relationship. Why? Because

we’re assuming that our spouse is hurting us on purpose. And we’re almost always wrong. In my research

study, I found that nearly all spouses — even in struggling marriages — deeply cared about their mate.

But if we want to have a great marriage, we'll have to force ourselves to believe that truth. We have to

believe that our spouse has good intentions toward us, even when we are legitimately hurt.

In Josh and Kathryn’s case, here’s what it looked like in practice. Kathryn later told me that after she had

the initial “I’m just not a priority” reaction, she purposefully switched that train of thought. No, she told

herself, I know he was looking forward to this date as much as I was. There must be another explanation.

And it entirely changed how she approached him.

When Josh finally came home at 9 p.m., he was stressed, anxious and a bit defensive. Kathryn was honest

but calm instead of furious. “I’m really disappointed,” she said. “What happened?”

Surprised at her measured tone of voice, Josh’s defenses dropped. “I’m so, so sorry,” he said. “I heard

today that the company is probably being acquired, and our team may be downsized. When Monty

asked me to jump on that last-minute call with a big client, I didn’t feel like I could say no.”

Kathryn disagreed with how Josh handled the situation, wondering why he couldn’t have pulled away for

60 seconds before getting on the call, just to let her know. But she saw the heart behind what seemed to

be a heartless action: Josh loved his wife and family and didn’t want to risk his ability to provide for them.

By assuming the best about Josh's motives — rather than the worst — Kathryn preserved the happiness

in their marriage instead of hurting it.

We can all do the same in our marriages. When we are hurt, as all of us will be at some time, we can remind

ourselves that our spouse almost certainly wants our best. And then we can look for the best explanation rather

than the worst. And when we do, we’ll see the signals of love and care that were likely there all along.

Mission Team 2015 went down to Columbus, Georgia this year to work with Team Effort and Neighborworks, who are there year round, lending a hand to those who work hard to keep their community together. Neighborworks helps social-economical middle class to lower middle class community/patrons by lending a helping hand to keep the communities from falling apart. We were able to work with them from July 28th through the August 1st by, sharing the load with the Love of Christ. It was wonderful to see the community give back and wonder about the group who came to help, all in the name of Christ. These are a few words from our Mission Team 2015 and what they experienced. Dear Centre Presbyterian Church, "Thank you for sending us on this wonderful Mission Trip. This week we worked with Team Effort and helped clean, paint and landscape homes. We met very nice people through this project, I could see God working through us and in their lives. This week we were challenged to work as a team and strengthen our YOUth group and I think we accomplished it. I am truly honored to be apart of this Mission Team 2015." - Cecily Wagner

"God was providing for us always. Whether it was the small things or the large things, he was always providing for us. They say every mission trip is an new experience...after working a few days on homes and having devotions and chapel time, I didn't feel that "Mission Trip High". Originally I thought it was a bad thing but then I realized it was a good thing. Rather than the emotional gush of revival and renewal, I felt a change in my heart. This wasn't some experience I would feel pumped about but it was about living for Christ/God....I think we have grown closer together like a real family in Christ." - Julia Choi "Thank you for the opportunity to go on this mission trip....on Thursday night during our last chapel time, I learned....We were given rocks. Those rocks

represented the times we said no to God, and how our no's keep us from Him. They way we can counteract our no's are with our yes's. God calls us to obey His will, and turning away from God and doing our own things builds a wall between us and God......My rock symbolized, distraction. I get distracted easily and forget to pray, or focus on petty things instead of God who made me. But, we put our rocks at the foot of the Cross so we could be closer to him without it." - Clair Sholar "Thank you for supporting us, I would like to gladly say that our Mission Trip was very successful. It wasn't successful because we simply completed given tasks but because we sincerely and whole heartedly strived to accomplish the service with a positive and God given attitude. We went in depth and talked about our faith and answered some hard questions and became real with each other. I love what God helped us accomplish and how He allowed us to grow." - Jeffrey Choi "Thank you for being so supportive for the past two years. I have gone to the last two mission trips. You are an amazing group that has cared for me even though I go to a different church. For the first time, I have experienced worship in a different way. You are so dedicated to worship and to the work of Christ. Keep being faithful." - Danial Hwang "First off I would like to say thank you. Thank you for allowing us to have a youth group and for allowing us to go on this mission trip. Because of your support we were able to spread the word of Christ to people close and far away.... Secondly, I would like to share with you....one day we went on a prayer walk. I was really cool to see how much people open up when you ask, " Can we pray for you?". I was really a cool experience and I cant wait till next time." - Hunter Smith "Thank you, I feel so blessed to have served God with these incredible youth this week. I feel so blessed to be apart of this church. I look forward to seeing Christ's kingdom grow further. We have really learned to lean on each other, not just for pleasure in each others company but also for comfort, support and love. I will remember this mission trip, because I got to experience in seeing my sisters and brothers in Christ grow and we all learned that we are not called "to do" but "to be" with Christ, and that all things good flow from being in the presence of Christ, Our Creator, Lord, Savior, Father and Friend" - James Choi

CALLING ALL WHO

ARE INTERESTED!

Do you have an interest in

singing? Maybe you enjoy singing praises to the Lord. David did. He sang many praises to the Lord.

Psalm 95:1

O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a

joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

We practice each Sunday at 4:00 p.m. and we are very excited to be looking at music for Homecoming and for the Holidays. If

anyone is interested, please let Eddie Karriker know and or plan to be in the

choir room at 4:00 on Sunday.
