Its Swimming Pool Time Again How Child-Safe Is Your Pool?

Swimming pools are a fixture in Tampa Palms, more than 94% of the homes have either a pool or a spa – many have both. Unfortunately that fact puts Tampa Palms res-idents at an increased risk for tragedy. The most common cause of death for children un-der five years in Florida is accidental drown-ing. Many more children are permanently dis-abled due to the effects of near-drowning. Tragedy can strike in a flash and in the place where one feels the safest– at home: 77% of the children who drown were seen less than 5

minutes before being missed. 65% of drowning's occur in the family pool, 22% at a

relative’s home. 69% or the drowning's occur while one or both of the

parents are present

City of Tampa Can Help Parents

Tampa Fire Rescue and the American Red Cross are going to use April Pools Day to kick off a drowning awareness and prevention program. A team of Tampa Fire Rescue paramed-ics have been trained to conduct home water safety awareness surveys. Tampa residents that have a pool in their yards are invited to call 813-242-5410 to schedule a survey. A paramedic will come to the resident’s house and help the pool owner under-stand safety precautions that should be taken to avoid child-hood drowning.

A Few Pool Safety Tips No Children? … Don’t Forget Visitors

Nothing replaces the need for constant adult supervi-sion any time a child has any access to a pool or spa but there are some safeguards suggested by the City. Surround your pool with a four-sided safety

fence, at least 4 feet high, that completely isolates your pool from both house and yard. Removable panels have proven useful for this.

Make sure fence gates into the pool

area are self-closing and self-latching. The latch should be located well above a child's reach and it should be inspected frequently to make certain that it is properly working and not rusted.

Install alarms on all doors leading to pool area.

A wide variety of door alarms are available that can be temporarily turned off by an adult pass-ing through with a button or key pad which is installed out of a child's reach.

Keep a cordless phone at poolside. Often a lapse

of supervision can occur when a caregiver dashes into the house to take a call. Keep a phone by the pool, so you can answer your calls without leaving the area.

Landscape and monument lighting adds to the beauty of the entrances in Tampa Palms and contributes to the ex-perience for all who run or stroll along the Tampa Palms boulevards in the evening or early mornings. Faced with four years of construction obscuring the en-

tries on BB Downs, lighting becomes even more critical as a way to say “Tampa Palms is here and open for business”. Phase I of the LED project

addressed the areas which had not been illuminated since the time of the original developers. Phase I is complete. Phase II, now in progress, replaces the exiting lighting with power stingy LED’s. Except for the new LED monument lights, the lighting used in Tampa Palms was 20 year old plus technology; it was tired and more than a little expensive to operate. The new LED fixtures are both less expensive from a hard-ware standpoint and they use a fraction of the power re-quired by the old lights as seen below.

The Area 1 & 2 entry lighting improvements are under-way and should complete by mid-April.

The Reserve and Westover entries will follow.

There have been a number of recent news articles regard-ing increases in garbage and trash collection rates for the City of Tampa.

These increases does not apply to Tampa Palms.

For Tampa Palms all solid waste - both collection and disposal – are provided by Hillsborough Coun-ty, who in turn outsources the collection for this area to Waste Management Inc.

Tampa Palms residents pay for trash and garbage services on their tax bills. Collection Services $136.23 / year Disposal Services $ 94.94 / year

Outdoor activities and Spring garden restoration can figure in heavily in the monthly water bills, especially if there are hard to notice irrigation system leaks.

Water rates are graduated and the monthly charge for wa-ter at the highest use tier is three times more per CCF (748 gal-lons) than the lowest tier.

1st 5 CCF mthly = $2.09/CCF

Over 47 CCF mthly = 6.28/CCF

Fortunately the City is transi-tioning to monthly meter read-ing and most of Tampa Palms (areas 5 & 7 on the graphic above) is already receiving monthly readings. The final portion (Area 8) will convert by August of this year.

Monthly meter reading is an important tool for citizens to monitor water usage and more quickly address leaks or even faulty meters.

For tips on how to detect irrigation leaks and much more, go online to the City of Tampa’s Water Dept. site. http://www.tampagov.net/dept_Water/information_resources/Sprinkler_Checkup/index.asp

Tampa Palms Women’s Club A Fashionable April

The TPWC Fashion Show is a two decade tradition of fun, fashion and fund raising for the best of causes… OASIS serving the needs of children.

This year features Janet Carr, the owner of ‘Accessories and More’ her self-proclaimed “boutique on wheels”.

The May outing is May 16th. The plan is for a fun day on the Tampa Bay Harbor Tour. This tour leaves from the aquarium and is free. Lunch to be decided. Make a note –this outing is on a Wednesday, not a Thursday. The March trip to Raymond James to view the large pri-vate art collection was great fun for all.

Have You Waked “The Walk”? The River Walk - Downtown Tampa

For local “getaways” this year that both children and adults will enjoy, check out the River Walk in downtown Tampa.

Mayor Buckhorn deems the River Walk so important as a showcase for Tampa that he held his first “State of the City” along it.

With a myriad of parks, play-grounds and museums, along with places to dine and shop, the Tampa River Walk is a great place to spend time with the family.

For more information about where to go, how to park and more go on line to: http://www.tampasdowntown.com/play/outdoor-activities/riverwalk/riverwalk-map.aspx
