I t is so easy to take the modern miracle of the birth of the first Jewish state in more than2000 years for granted. We either get so caught up in the soap opera-like dramas of

Israel’s internal political machinations, or we become so frustrated with the lack ofmovement in the peace process, that we tend to become jaded to the miracle of the 14th ofMay 1948.

The editors of our daily prayer book, in the Conservative Movement, added a unique prayerwithin the gratitude prayer, Modim, in the Amidah, so we would elevate the annual birthdayof the State of Israel into a prayerful moment. Although no sacrifices were brought to the

Temple on Yom Ha Atzma’ut (as the Temple had been destroyed some 2000 years earlier), nevertheless the custom in oursynagogue is to sing Hallel, in a full voice, every Yom Ha Atzma’ut so we will be further reminded what a miracle Israel’sexistence is to our people.

I teach a class on Israel, centering on engagement, with our teenagers enrolled in our twice-monthly Confirmation program. Inour last session, in a course designed by the prestigious Jerusalem-based Shalom Hartman Institute, I spoke of Sovereignty andNational Identity. I tried to explain to our students how important it is for Jews to finally be able to defend themselves, and notrely on the kindness of others – kindness which could be very fickle. I shared that one of the huge benefits of national Jewishsovereignty is living in a country where you feel truly at home. From personal experience, I shared how amazing it is to be livingin a Jewish state that is completely kosher for Passover, where everyone has off for not one, but BOTH days of Rosh Hashana,and Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. I shared how amazing it is to live Jewish life in Sensurround,where on Friday afternoon you can smell the aroma of fresh-baked challah from all the bakeries, where you can see lit Shabbatcandles in people’s windows, where you hear the growing quiet as restful Shabbat descends on a chaotic week.

I recently came back from the three-day AIPAC Conference, and what touched me the most, was the pure joy people had for theState of Israel. Speaker after speaker, from a brave IDF Soldier who made aliyah from England, to a heroic mountain climberwho gave up his dream to be the youngest Israeli to scale Mount Everest in favor of saving a stranded Turkish climber near thesummit, who was close to death. After lamenting the disconnect and lack of civility between Democrat and Republicanlawmakers, it was heartening to see and hear how their support for Israel united them. While lobbying Senators Carper andCoons, and Representative Carney on foreign aid for Israel, diplomatic support for Israel in the shadow of Iran’s growing nuclearthreat, and upgrading Israel’s status to Strategic Partner, it was exciting to learn how enthusiastic, committed and well-informedour Delaware Congressional Delegation was on all the issues facing Israel. We are blessed with supportive friends in Washington– the most enthusiastic being our own Vice President Joe Biden, who said he first learned support for the creation of a Jewishstate back in his childhood, at the family dining room table.

I want to keep that love of Israel alive in YOU! Please join me and our fellow Delawareans on Sunday, April 28, at the SiegelJCC for two Todd Herzog Musical Concerts on Lag B’Omer, (11:00am-Noon for the PJ Library 0 to 5 group and , 2:00-4:00pm for the ENTIRE Community. I, along with my fellow rabbis, am proud to be a co-sponsor of this musical program.

Please join me the following Sunday, May 5, from 6:00-8:00pm, at the Delaware Art Museum, for Peace Drums: A GalileanSteel Band Roll Out Event. As co-chair, I am working with fellow Jews and committed Christian clergy dedicated to Arab-Jewish peacemaking, to invest in a new, start-up peace project in the Galilee, between Jewish and Arab youth living in the Jewishregion of Misgav and the Arab village of Ibillin, featuring the learning and performance of Jamaican built steel drums.

And please mark your calendars now for mid-June 2014, for our first-ever joint CBS-AKSE Ten-Day Group Trip to Israel.The trip will be co-led by both Rabbi Saks and myself, through Ayelet Tours, and organized by our own Ceil Roth. This will be afamily-friendly trip, with special madrichim (counselors) for our children, with enough variety so even if you went with CBS fiveyears ago, you will have totally new experiences. Above all, find a special, unique way to celebrate Israel’s 65th birthday – and always stay alive to the miracle of the first Jewishstate in more than two thousand years.

OUR CANTORISRAEL AT 65!

F ive years ago, I was blessed with the privilege of living in Israel for a year. My firstof five formal years of study in the H.L. Cantorial School was held in Jerusalem.

Upon graduating from the University of California in Santa Barbara, I packed my bagsand embarked on what I now consider to be one of the best years of my life. Thinkingback, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. That year I studied intensive modernHebrew at a local Ulpan and took Judaic classes at the Conservative Yeshiva five daysper week. I would live for my Fridays in the Old City of Jerusalem exploring the sights,smells, and tastes of each neighborhood. Every time I would pray at the Kotel, theWestern Wall, I would become overwhelmed with emotion, as if it was my very firsttime seeing and touching it. Every week I used to get excited to walk a mile each wayfrom my apartment to the Mahane Yehudah Shuk where I would buy the most deliciousand authentic hummus, borekas, dried fruits and nuts, challah, fruits and vegetables,rugelach, and Israeli salads. I used to look forward to hearing the shuk vendors bargainwith customers, and I especially loved experiencing the mad rush of furious shoppingbefore the start of Shabbat followed by a peaceful hush over the city right around sun-

down on Friday afternoons. The aroma of Shabbat dinner combined with the beautiful sound of prayer made Shabbat anincredibly special experience each week.Probably the most memorable part of my year in Israel was being able to celebrate Israel’s 60th birthday in the city ofJerusalem. I remember the excitement in the air for weeks leading up to this special milestone. On erev Yom Ha’atzmaut,many of us went out for a celebratory meal followed by a night of festive celebrating on Ben Yehudah Street. People wereliterally dancing and singing in the streets holding Israeli flags and with faces painted blue and white. Famous Israeli singerscame and sang and helped to make the day one of the happiest in history. I have vivid memories of feeling choked upthinking about this incredible milestone and all of the obstacles the people of Israel have endured to allow the state toflourish.I can’t believe that it has already been five years since this incredible moment in history, as Israel is turning 65 this month. Ihave never been more proud to be a Jew and loyal supporter of Israel. When a person turns 65, I believe he or she has theright to brag about their many accomplishments in life. That being said, I would like to brag about the many of Israel’saccomplishments! Here are some of Israel’s many achievements, courtesy of the Jewish Federation:

Israel is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East.In 1984 and 1991, Israel airlifted a total of 22,000 Ethiopian Jews at risk in Ethiopia to safety in Israel.Israel has more museums per capita than any other country.Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees to the population in the world.Israeli scientists developed the first fully computerized, no-radiation, diagnostic instrumentation for breast cancer.Israel's Givun imaging developed the first ingestible video camera, so small it fits inside a pill. Used to view

the small intestine from the inside, the camera helps doctors diagnose cancer and digestive disorders.Israel has two official languages: Hebrew and Arabic.When Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1969, she became the world's second elected

female leader in modern times.The cell phone was developed in Israel by Motorola, which has its largest development center in Israel.Israel has the highest percentage in the world of home computers per capita.According to industry officials, Israel designed the airline industry's most impenetrable flight security.

U.S. officials now look to Israel for advice on how to handle airborne security threats.Relative to its population, Israel is the largest immigrant-absorbing nation on earth. Immigrants come in search of

democracy, religious freedom, and economic opportunity.

Israel has faced its share of challenges, yet has defied all odds and flourished even in the face of danger and hardship. Thisyear on Yom Ha’atzmaut as we celebrate Israel’s 65th birthday, I invite you to step back and think about how Israel hasimpacted your life as a Jew. Am Yisrael Chai!

Jay Halio is Professor Emeritusof English at the University ofDelaware, though he currently

serves as Interim Director of JewishStudies at the University ofDelaware. He has taught both in thefield of Shakespeare studies and onmodern fiction, with a book onPhilip Roth, for example, and many articles and reviews.He has served as visiting professor at the University ofCyprus, University of Sofia, Bulgaria and the University ofAlicante, Spain. In the Jewish Studies program, he hastaught a course on contemporary Jewish American fiction,and next fall he plans to teach a course on Anti-Semitism.Professor Halio serves on advisory committees of severaluniversities, the Globe Theater Centre, and boards andcommittees of numerous academic publications. He hasbeen at the University since 1968 and lives in Newark withhis wife, Diane Isaacs.Professor Halio’s topic for our Second Friday Shabbat onFriday, April 12 will be The Jewish Studies Program atthe University of Delaware.This program at the University of Delaware, established inthe Fall of 1990, is an interdisciplinary program within theCollege of Arts and Sciences. Jewish Studies is a secular,academic discipline that covers Jewish civilization from itsancient Near Eastern origins through its contemporaryhistory and culture in the United States, in Israel and incommunities around the world. The program focuses onteaching and research on Jewish history, literature, cultureand philosophy, building its strength from theinterdisciplinary nature of the intellectual offerings. TheProgram is housed in the Frank and Yetta Chaiken Centerfor Jewish Studies and was endowed with a generous giftby the Chaikens.During his remarks, Professor Halio will also share with usdetails of a Spring Lecture Series “Judaism Yesterday,Today, and Tomorrow” at the University of Delawarethat is open to the public. This month we want tohighlight Falana Walls for herexemplary service to our synagogue.This lady has stepped forward andserved our shul’s needs in so manydiverse functions that one wonderswhere she gets the stamina.

With a nine-year-old son, there’s no“stretch” for her to be actively involved as a concernedparent in the CBS Hebrew School PTA. She and herhusband John were “all over” the celebrations of Chanukahand Purim; she heads the Sisterhood’s involvement ineducation and programming. She has also recently beensuper active in the planning, preparation andimplementation of the Rabbi’s Birthday. In her spare timeshe’s signed herself on to the Kitchen Klub’s efforts (Shesays she wants to be a better cook and baker!!) Welcomeaboard!!

Her interests are varied and her commitment to serveand her energy seem without limit. What a wonder!!

SILVERMAN SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

C ongregants Aliya Cohen and Randall Frank havebeen selected as the recipients

of the Sylvia and Isadore N.Silverman Scholarship awards for2013. Given annually, thesestipends assist young peopleparticipating in a summer programof Jewish study or enrichment, whilerecognizing their achievements.

Aliya is a graduate of the AlbertEinstein Academy and is now anhonors freshman at Concord HighSchool. She will travel to Israel as aCIT with Camp Pinemere in aprogram called Solelim 2013. Thisincludes Camp Livingston andCamp Solomon Schecter. Aliya isthe daughter of Benjie and JodiCohen.

Randy is a 10th grader at the JackBarrack Hebrew Academy. He willattend the BBYO-ILTC, which isthe Combined BBYO InternationalLeadership and Kallah, a Jewish experience program.Randy’s parents are Marty and Jodi Frank.

The Sylvia and Isadore N. Silverman Scholarship Fundwas established in 1989, on the occasion of the Silvermans’55th wedding anniversary, by their children and friends.The award honors their many years of dedication to theWilmington Community, especially to Adas Kodesch ShelEmeth Congregation and to the Boy Scouts of America.

Ethan Charles Fruchtman isbecoming a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday,April 27, 2013 at Congregation BethShalom.

Ethan is a 7th grade honor student in thegifted program at P.S. DuPont MiddleSchool. He is a member of the NationalJunior Honor Society, SymphonicBand, and participates in a tutoring program at P.S. DuPontto help students who need extra support in math.

Ethan is passionate about swimming and swimscompetitively year round in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Heenjoys playing the saxophone, spending time with friendsand family, and enjoys summers at overnight camp atCamp Airy, in Maryland.

His Bar Mitzvah project involved several organizations.Once per month, Ethan visited residents of the Kutz homewith his rescue beagle, Emma. He prepared and servedmeals at Emmanuel Dining Room, through Jewish FamilyServices, and donated much needed pet food to FaithfulFriends, a local animal shelter.

Ethan is the son of Samantha and David Fruchtman,brother to Madeleine, and grandson of Harvey Hewit andthe late Brenda Hewit and Eda and Leon Fruchtman.

You will find a description of our services in theCBS Membership Directory.Coordinated activities include: visits to hospitalizedcongregants and residents of assisted-living or nursinghome facilities; shiva support for members without localfamily or friends; phone calls to home-bound congregants;and transportation assistance for home-bound congregantsto Shabbat services and synagogue-related activities.The Chesed Network works closely with our clergy and weensure the privacy of the person or family in need; steppingin only as directed by the individual or family. As Chair, Irepresent the central point of contact for the Network.When a message is received, by e-mail or phone call,regarding a hospitalized congregant, I begin by reachingout with a personal phone call, to determine whethervisitors are welcome and any other additional supportneeds. When there is a loss in the CBS community, I reachout to the family to learn their point of contact, so we maydiscuss the needs and provide organized support. Once theneeds are determined, I. along with my fellow co-chairs,communicate the information to our network of volunteers.As volunteers, we do what we can, to the best of ourability.If you have been touched by our services and would like tothank us, you are welcome to provide in-kind chesed(kindness) in the form of a donation. MAY THEIR MEMORY BE A BLESSING

From January 6th to 13th, three homeless families including atotal of seven children had a safe, warm place to sleep, hothome-cooked dinners, and caring members of an interfaith

community to help them through a difficult period in their lives.More than 70 volunteers from five 9th Ward Congregations,including Beth Shalom – worked together in an interfaith projectknown as Family Promise. The families each had a bedroomcomplete with air mattresses and curtains at Peninsula-McCabe.Volunteers prepared the rooms, cooked and served meals and atewith the families, while others came in the evenings just tosocialize. It also gave volunteers a chance to get to know nice,friendly people who just happen to be homeless at this time, and asa side benefit, to get to know and work with members of othercongregations.

Volunteers are needed for weeks of May 12 - 19 and September 22- 29, to assist with hosting homeless families at Peninsula-McCabeChurch. We need people to cook and serve dinners and weekendbreakfasts, visit with the families in the evenings, and drivers forthe 14-person van each morning and evening. We also need twoovernight hosts each evening. Contact: Dina Lipschultz,[email protected], 302-762-4341.

Also needed: donations in any amount to help provide food andsupplies for hosting weeks, and assistance to families when they areable to move into their own homes.

FAMILY PROMISE: A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

The Nominating and LeadershipDevelopment Committee will soon beginwork on identifying candidates for

Officers and members of the Board of Directorsfor 2013-2014.

According to our current by-laws, the Committeenominates a slate of Officers and Directorsannually, and the slate is circulated with thenotice of the Annual Meeting. Appointed by theCBS President, the Committee consists of five toeight members, including both Board and nonBoard members.
