What does it mean to stand before an empty tomb?

In Jesus’ day, there were many understandings of just who he was. In Matthew, Jesus asked this all important question of his disciples. “13Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ 14And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ 15He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’”

This side of the grave, Jesus was, to many, just another in the long line of good, God-fearing men sent to Israel in order to straighten them out, get them back on the straight and narrow. Too few saw Jesus for who he truly was. Peter was one of them: “16Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ 17And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For fl esh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.’”

This side of the grave, Jesus walked and talked, taught and healed. He was very much like many other great men: Aristotle, Plato, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. He ate with ‘sinners’, lived a moral and good life, and was ridiculed by society, murdered.

But then something spectacular happened. Something that sets Jesus apart – something that changes life forever.

We’re told that on the third day, when the women went to the empty tomb to anoint Jesus’ body, that the stone was rolled away – and the body was not there. Jesus is not there. The impossible has become possible. He is not dead, but is risen. Jesus is so much more than a moral, good man. So much more.

Have you ever read C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe? In it, Lucy, her brothers and sister step into a wardrobe, a big piece of furniture that’s used as a closet, and on the other side of the cupboard, a whole new dimension of life exists.

When the women arrived at the empty tomb that fi rst Easter morning, they found something that shook their understanding of life and death to its very core. They raced away from there – not really knowing or understanding the full meaning of what they had perceived. Not seeing the true depth of the emptiness that was confronting them.

How would we react? How DO we react when we stand at the entrance of that tomb? What does it mean for us? What does the reality of the empty tomb mean?

It means suspending our understanding of how life works – about how God works. It means accepting that there is a bigger reality that what we can know, touch, see or sense. That God’s reality is much larger than what we can perceive.

continued to page 4

Page 4: April Grapevine 2014 (emial-website) · 5050 Johnsburg Road Johnsburg, IL 60051 3rd Annual Motorcycle Blessing and Ride April 26, 2014 9:30am Join us for food, fun and fellowship

It means believing in a God who can and does create all things. It means believing that God can raise life back up from death. It means believing that for God – all things ARE possible. It means having faith. The author of Hebrews writes: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Jesus’ resurrection changes and challenges our understanding of how life works. But guess what - Christ came to earth just for that specifi c purpose – to turn our thinking upside down – to completely change our understanding of what is important. The poor are rich, the fi rst are last, the least are most and what we believe is impossible… Well, nothing is impossible for God.

So, join me this Easter, standing before the empty tomb. The fact that there is nothing inside – that’s where hope comes from.

Easter blessings,Pr. Doug

Our Younger Worshipers: We believe strongly that God invites and welcomes everyone, young and old alike. At Joyful Harvest, children are often dancing during hymns and moving about during the service. We see this not as a distraction, but embrace it as a natural part of the fullness of God’s kingdom.

? Christian Symbol Palms –– When Jesus entered Jerusalem days before his death, crowds welcomed him by waving palm branches, which were common symbols of victory and rejoicing. Thus churches continue to use them in remembrance of that occasion, knowing that Jesus’ crucifi xion was ultimately his triumph over sin and death. As early as Leviticus 23:40, God commanded Israel to use palms in a festival of rejoicing. In Revelation

7:9-10, Christian martyrs carry palm branches as they praise the Lamb before the throne of God.

Surrendering the Secret Abortion Support GroupAbortion has been a readily available part of our culture since it’s legalization in 1973. Since then approximately 55 million abortions have been recorded in our nation. Statistics estimate that close to 43% (1 out of 3) women of childbearing age have experienced an abortion. These are your sisters, mothers, wives and friends. These women carry an incredible burden of silence and heartache. Many struggle for years with repressed memories, guilt, shame and depression. Most women feel they are not allowed to talk about their abortion experience, especially in church.

The truth is many women who have had an abortion suffer from symptoms of post-abortion grief and trauma. Most often, neither the medical community nor the church understands abortion as a risk factor in a woman’s physical, spiritual or emotional health.

If you feel you have never completely healed or recovered from an abortion experience, or that a past abortion may be affecting your current quality of life, then Surrendering the Secret is for you. This study offers a 6-step biblical healing model led by women who have been where you are. To confi dentially contact a post-abortive ministry leader, email [email protected].

Roman Emperor Constantine and the real start of the Easter Festival

A long time ago people used to celebrate when Spring arrived. People used to believe that changes in seasons were guided by spirits or gods, and that the blooming of plants and fl owers and animals coming out of their hibernation and the return of birds brought life back to the land. This new life in spring symbolizes the new life Christians gain because of Jesus’s death on the cross and His subsequent resurrection.

In ancient Egypt, Easter was celebrated at the same time Jesus was crucifi ed during the Jewish Passover. This was so for many years. However, in A.D. 325, the Roman Emperor Constantine (after whom the old Turkish capital of Constantinople is named) convened the First Council of Nicaea (now called Turkey), which determined and published the fi rst ever Christian Doctrine, called the Nicene Creed.

One result of the council was an agreement on the date of what they called the “Christian Passover” (Pascha in Greek) and of course what we call today, Easter in modern English, and the most important feast of the ecclesiastical calendar. Actually, some Christians in the US especially, still celebrate a Christian Passover Seder, the special family meal, but with different meanings to that of the Jewish Passover Seder.

The council decided in favor of celebrating the resurrection on the fi rst Sunday after the fi rst full moon following the vernal equinox, and authorized the Bishop of Alexandria (presumably using the Alexandrian calendar) to announce annually the exact date to his fellow bishops. Thus the dates of Easter were fi xed within a range of March 22nd and April 25th.
