Story From A Blood Recipient https://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-blood/blood-donor-community/blood-recipient-stories

Stephanie With Red Cell Anemiaby Stephanie

I never thought I would be in need of regular blood transfusions. Who would? I was 28 and healthy. Then after a diagnosis of Breast cancer and then later acute myeloid leukemia and finally a bone marrow transplant I found myself in need of biweekly blood transfusions to keep me alive. One complication from my transplant has been red cell anemia, where my body is killing my new red cells before they can be pushed into my blood stream.

I'm so thankful for everyone who donates, I wish I would have donated before my transplant. I was O- and could have helped so many. Now I've enlisted my husband to make up for all I've used. He's got a ways to go to donate 30+ units!

Reflexology Treatment

What Is Reflexology?Submitted by Trish Hastings Sargent

https://theheartysoul.com/foot-massage-for-pain-relief/

Reflexology is a type of science based on the idea that there are “zones” or reflex areas on the hands and feet that correspond with all of the glands, organs, parts and systems found inside or on the body.

According to the idea of reflexology, applying pressure to these points using specific thumb, finger and hand techniques results in a reduction of stress in the body. This reduction of stress is said to promote many positive physiological changes that can heal a number of ailments.

There are studies that have seen a correlation between reflexology and improved symptoms of certain ailments. These include eight randomized clinical trials which found that reflexology was effective for treating diabetes, premenstrual syndrome, cancer, multiple sclerosis, symptomatic idiopathic detrusor over-activity and dementia.

Benefits of Reflexology

Although one of the best benefits of reflexology is its ability to help treat or cure certain harmful ailments, it can also benefit relatively healthy people as well. Here are some other ways that reflexology can help you:

• Stimulates nerve function• Increases energy

• Boosts circulation• Eliminates toxins• Prevents migraines• Cleans urinary tract• Speeds up recovery time from injuries• Treats sleep disorders• Reduces depression• Relieves pain

Reflexology also allows you to target specific points on your body by using the same principles of acupressure.

Diamond Bell Group News

By Bill Praust

The Diamond Bell Group conducted its first Adopt-A-Road cleanup for 2018. A crew of seven residents cleaned up Diamond Bell Road, from Sasabe Road to Sierrita Mountain Road. In addition, two of our neighbors ran a mower and did cleanup around the area of our Diamond Bell sign at Stagecoach Ave. Crews found everything from, beer bottles, cups, back packs, shirts, pants, camouflage shoes with carpet soles and cell phones! No guns or ammo found this time.

The crews stayed out from 9 am to almost 1 pm! That’s dedication! Twenty five large garbage bags were filled! Our thanks goes out to all of the participants. Those that were not able to join us this time will always have another chance. We conduct this activity at least twice a year.

How about it, other Three Points Groups, get your volunteers and neighbors together and choose a road to clean up. It’s great camaraderie and keeps our community looking good.

About Valley Feverhttp://www.azdhs.gov/preparedness/epidemiology-disease-control/valley-fever/

index.php#about

Valley Fever is an infection of the lungs caused by a fungus that grows in the soil in Arizona, the southern and central portions of California and portions of Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah. The fungus was also recently found in south-central Washington. Valley Fever is also found in parts of Mexico, Central and South America. These areas where the fungus grows in the soil are called "endemic areas."

40% of people who are infected will develop symptoms such as: Cough, Fever, Exhaustion, Rash, Chest pain.

There is also Night sweats, Joint pain, Muscle aches, Headaches, Weight loss, Lack of appetite

Some symptoms can last for weeks or even months. Most people with symptoms will get better without treatment. However, some people may develop severe forms of the disease.

The infectious form of the fungus

Preventing Valley Fever is difficult since anyone who breathes in air in areas where the fungus lives can get it. However, avoiding blowing dust and staying inside during a dust storm is recommended. The best way to protect yourself is learning the signs and symptoms of the disease and if you have them, asking your doctor to test you for it.

Are You Thinking Of Burning Brush This Spring? Here Is What You Need To Know

Message From Our Three Points Fire District andInformation From The Pima.gov site.

Open Burninghttp://www.deq.pima.gov/air/OpenBurning.htm

Open Burning is the burning of materials such as trees, brush, leaves, grass and other debris where smoke and other emissions are released directly into the air without passing through a chimney or stack. Air pollution from open burning can cause serious health problems, obscure visibility, or damage to the environment.

Pima County DEQ regulates opening burning to address these concerns. Pima County DEQ rules require a permit for open burning; however, a permit is not required for certain types of open burning such as campfires, barbecues, and small fires for warmth.

Open Burning in Three PointsBy Linda Jones

On February 25th, our Three Points Fire Department helping a community member with a burn in her yard.

Robles Community Support helped prepare the yard first and it was a job well done.

To get a burn permit you must contact the Three Points Fire District at  (520) 822-1086

to have your pile inspected When the fire department  arrives you must

1  Have your piles in place or your pit ready2. Have a water source with good pressure3. Piles must be at least 30 feet from all structures

You have the option to have the Fire Department do the burn for

you. Call and make an appointment for them to come and assess the size of the burn.

The pile must contain only brush. The only material that can be burned in the community is agricultural- No processed wood, tires, garbage etc.

They will give you an estimated cost for their service. You will then need to call for an appointment (520) 822-1086 .

As March comes to an end, we would like to continue to remind you not to drink and drive. The Sheriff ’s Department is dedicated to its mission of taking impaired drivers off the roadway and making it safer for the citizens of Pima County. Remember “buzzed” driving is impaired driving.

If you drive impaired you may:• Lose your license• Have your vehicle impounded• Pay excessive attorney’s fees• Be fined upon conviction• Be required to install an ignition interlock device in your

vehicle (at your cost)• Spend time in jail

We hope that, if you consume alcohol, you will make a plan to not drive. Together, we can avoid needless tragedy and keep the roads safer

Festival Preparations Underway!By Barb Praust for he Festival Committee

Though it is not even Springtime, the Three Points Festival Committee has hit the ground running reviewing last year's accomplishments and short comings and planning for a "Better Than Ever" event for this Fall. The community will be more involved than ever before and so far the VFW has sponsored a fund raising dinner on St. Patrick's Day.

We will be looking for Sponsors early so as to be able to know the extent to which we can find funding for the event. Traditional sources of funds are changing and drying up, making it necessary for the Festival Committee to get VERY creative. Last year we had the beginning of personal/private sponsors under the heading of

"FRIENDS OF THE FESTIVAL". These were generous individuals who wished to contribute to the success of the Festival. We are Very grateful for any and all those businesses or individuals who wish to contribute funds, in-kind services, or gift certificates and/or coupons for redemption at their place of business.

The Fence Post is pleased to once again be a Festival Sponsor this year and will be offering other sponsors opportunities to promote their organization or business.

You may call Barbara Praust @ 915/525-7718 or email [email protected] to ask any burning questions you may have or to set an appointment for her to come by with Sponsorship materials and application.

If you would like to lend your expertise, share your energy, or just be a part, we welcome your interest and participation as a volunteer or at the monthly committee meetings. These happen on the third(3rd) Thursday of every month at the Robles Junction Community Center @ 16150 W. Ajo Way. Join us in the fun!!!

Growing a reader from the very beginning: Online video helps parents make reading with their baby a daily routine

Lourdes M. Leslie. [email protected]

TUCSON (March 16, 2018) – A new video designed to show parents easy tips for reading with their babies is now available from First Things First. The two-minute video can be viewed at https://youtu.be/28uZFnX6uls

The video offers ways parents can help their baby develop language skills from the day they are born. When a young child hears words and language, the brain develops important connections needed to learn how to read.Reading with a baby is also a great opportunity to build a strong and healthy relationship between parent and child.

Every year, throughout March, classrooms across the nation host reading events for elementary school children. But early literacy starts way before a child reaches a classroom. It begins before babies can talk and continues as they become toddlers and preschoolers. In fact, studies have linked the number of words children know at ages 3 and 4 to their reading comprehension levels in third and fourth grade. Reading daily with children starting at birth helps them learn new words.

First Things First offers families help to grow early language and literacy skills starting from birth. In addition to the video, there’s an early literacy page on the FTF website, http://www.firstthingsfirst.org/for-parents-and-families/literacy. Here parents and families can find ways to build a child’s brain, lists of favorite age-appropriate books and more ways to make reading 20 minutes a day a family habit.

Another great resource to help families instill a love of reading in their children can be found through Read On Arizona, an FTF

partners that engages communities in supporting early literacy for kids birth to 8 years old.

Read On Arizona offers resources and tools such as Smart Talk, which encourages parents to have quality back-and-forth conversations with your baby. Though babies can’t talk, they can still communicate with caring adults in their lives – through eye contact, facial expressions, smiles and crying.

For babies, a quality conversation starts with talking to your baby during everyday moments, such as meal time, baths and diaper changes to name a few.

Locally, Make Way for Books Is againg launching the annual Raising a Reader program that gives families and caregivers the tools they need to share books effectively with children up to five years old. The seven-week, interactive program is free of charge, along with books and food for those in attendance. The program begins March 19 and April 2-5 at various neighborhood schools in the Pima South region. For a schedule and other information, call 520-398-6451 or visit www.makewayforbooks.org.

It is said that children are made readers in the laps of their parents. Families can help foster early language and literacy skills in many ways, beginning by reading everyday with babies from the day they are born.

Troubleshooting or New Work

Altar Valley School District News

Recently Robles Elementary School students’ grades 1-5 completed the annual mini-marathon.  When I first started the running program in PE class it was initially a tool to work on endurance and to show students that being the fastest and leaving everyone else behind wasn’t always the way to win.

This tool quickly turned in to something so much more.  Students who otherwise did not enjoy sports because they were either too embarrassed to try or thought they weren’t good enough slowly started to realize that this was something they could do whether they were naturally athletic or not, that with a little bit of heart and stick-to-itiveness they too could achieve something they didn’t think they could before.  That winning wasn’t everything but trying certainly was.

Community Based Instruction

Hello, my name is Danielle Chaney and I have the best teaching position in the district.  My classroom is the Social, Adaptive, Intellectual, Life Skills cross categorical classroom housed at the middle school.  This year for the 1st time, we have incorporated a “Community Based Instruction” curriculum into our program which allows our students learning to expand beyond the classroom and out into the community. Our students see and experience, hands on learning opportunities that bolster their academic and practical life skills supporting their ability to become more self sufficient and independent.  Approximately, once a month our students learn important aspects and facts about specific businesses or locations that they then can physically visit and see for themselves how important these are to our community.   This year, each CBI has offered students a memorable and exciting life experience and an academically valued success.

5 years later these students look forward to the yearly event and spend time talking about their accomplishment the year before.  These same students realize that they CAN do anything they put their minds to.  Training for the mini-marathon is a part of PE class; however the competition itself is not mandatory.  I realize that not every student enjoys running or competition but by participating in the training they realize for themselves what they are truly capable of.  All students are encouraged to try.

The competition lasts for a maximum of 60 minutes without a break.  Here are the 2018 results by grade level:

4th Grade: 25 competitors with 17 completing the full 60 minutes.

3rd Grade: 25 competitors with 17 completing the full 60 minutes.

2nd Grade: 31 competitors with 17 completing the full 60 minutes (I’m sensing a trend here)

1st Grade: 17 competitors with 5 completing the full 60 minutes.

Every single one of these runners made me beyond proud to be their PE teacher!!!!!

Mini-Marathon CompetitionBy Tresa M. Callabrizzi

Our very first and incredibly exciting CBI experience, was to Three Points Fire Station.   There, Chief Williams led us through the fire station explaining and showing what it is like to work as a firefighter.   My students are still talking about their time in the fire truck and the paramedic vehicle, how they would like to be a firefighter when they are older, and now have a real understanding of what a firefighter does during their working day.   After each of our community visits this year, our students understanding and discussions over these newly explored environments and employment opportunities has allowed them to think about more possibilities for their own futures.

We have visited this year, the Fire Station, an Alpaca ranch, Fry’s grocery store, the University of Arizona, the Reid Park Zoo, and next week we will be visiting the “Ben’s Bells” project.  Students will focus on the importance of being “kind” and will get to practice new ways to help others, behave appropriately in new situations, and the act of being intentionally kind while they engage in a hands on community service project.

This year has been an amazing year, and we look forward to the adventures in store as we continue the program.

Altar Valley School District NewsDear Altar Valley Families,

I want to take this opportunity to thank the entire Altar Valley community for all they have done to make Altar Valley School District an All-Star School District. I am proud that both Altar Valley Schools earned a “B” label, as determined by the Arizona Department of Education A-F labels, this fall. Additionally, Altar Valley School District scored in the 98th percentile out of 11,000 school districts nationwide in a study of academic growth conducted by Stanford University. These achievements would not have been possible without your support, particularly the support provided by the YES VOTE in November 2014 to continue the 10% Maintenance & Operations Override. In the 2017-18 school year, the District has been able to increase its budget by $424,710 because of the continuation of the Override. This increased funding has made a tremendous impact on the district, including:

ϖ ! Funding full-day kindergarten

! o While the state of Arizona only funds half day kindergarten, the Altar Valley School District continues offering full-day kindergarten with small class sizes and additional para professional support

ϖ ! Maintaining low class sizes o Robles Elementary average class size is 23 students per

class o Altar Valley Middle School average class size is 26 student

per class

ϖ ! Attracting and retaining a high quality teaching staff o In 2016-2017, Altar Valley created a competitive salary

schedule that raised teachers annual salaries an average of more than $5,000 and made Altar Valley School District one of the top paying districts in Pima County

ϖ ! Providing athletic programs at no-cost to students in grades 5 – 8

o While other school districts have to charge student athletes to participate in programs, Altar Valley has been able to keep these programs free.

o Over the past several years Altar Valley teams have seen a significant increase in the number of our sports teams making it to the playoffs.

ϖ ! Expanding programs o Our career exploration program Paxton Patterson has

been identified as a model program and was highlighted on PBS 6 “Arizona Week”

Thank you to the Altar Valley community for your continued support and your YES Vote!

The override must be approved for continuation by November 5, 2019, to avoid a phase-out of the additional funding to our programs. Please help us keep Altar Valley an All-Star School District! Sincerely, Dr. David Dumon, Superintendent

The AVMS Drama Club has been working in collaboration with Northwestern University to write and produce the show. The writing process was very interesting as the ideas from the AVMS students were woven together in the final script that includes, a rip in time, kidnapped tamales, talking trees, absolutely despicable villains, an engaging heroine, a fable with a wolf, fox, and lion and a hero with a unicorn.

A summary of the plot: The shield of kindness that protects the people on the Planet of Light and Love ruled by Venus has been penetrated.  As a result, there is no protection against her jealous, evil sister, Oka, who wants to destroy and distort that which is good and true. An unlikely heroine, Alice, a little girl who believes in the power of legends, is sent to three different planets through a rip in time to discover three lessons that will destroy the power of evil and restore kindness to the planet. The script has all the kids ideas about the topic of light and has the importance of kindness as the central theme aligned to AVMS and Robles our Ben’s Bell Kindness Campuses.

AVMS Cafeteria at 6:00 p.m. is the place and time to be on Thursday, May 10, 218 for this show that will be enlightening, entertaining, and an amazing display of light as well.
