APRIL 2014 Our Talk. Our Walk. Every Day! Our Service Approach Step 2 – Fulfillment and Anticipation of Resident and Guest Desires During Platinum Service training, we learned that customer loyalty is achieved when an organization focuses on providing personalized service to its customers. This is the heart of our Service Approach to residents and guests. Some techniques we use to meet residents’ unique and personal requirements include engaging and adjusting to their pace, fulfilling expected and expressed wishes, anticipating any unexpressed wishes, and asking if any other assistance is desired. We are able to deliver this service by being proactive, using the resident or guest’s name, and remembering their preferences. Our goal is to go over and above the “ordinary” service that might be expected. “To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity.” —Douglas Adams April Calendar Highlights Please join us: Tuesday, April 1 — April Fools’ Day. Resident SpotlightVolunteers Phillip and Emily recently completed a scrapbook detailing resident Shirley G.’s life. This school project became a labor of love for both students. They enjoyed listening to Shirley’s firsthand account of what life was like “back in the old days,” and Shirley enjoyed spending time with the teenagers, feeling their youthful exuberance. It was a wonderful experience for both generations. Here is what Phillip and Emily learned about Shirley:Shirley was 19 when she joined the United States Marine Corps in 1944. Why a Marine? According to Shirley, every branch of the military had nicknames for females except the Marines. “If you were a Marine, you were called a Marine.”Shirley was first deployed at Camp Pendleton where her first job was selling war bonds. Her favorite base was in San Diego, where she worked as a switchboard operator. It was there that she was late promoted to the rank of sergeant.Shirley met her husband, Earl, a fellow Marine, at a dance. Ten days later, they were married. In 2005, Earl wrote that when he told his mother that he was bringing a sergeant home, she asked, “What’s his name?” Earl replied, “It’s not a ‘he,’ it’s a ‘she’!” Earl and Shirley had four sons; James, Robert, Michael and Mark.Shirley is an active resident at Regal Palms. She enjoys social events, chatting with people in the Ice Cream Parlor, welcoming new residents and going to the Plaza.Shirley’s advice: “Nothing is perfect in life, but you put one foot in front of the other and follow your nose. Enjoy each day!”

PassoverAll of our Jewish residents are invited to celebrate Passover with a traditional Seder at Cypress Palms on Tuesday, April 15, at 5 p.m. Please sign up in the Outing book if you would like to attend. The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.

Are You FIT?FIT to Be Strong, that is? We have a variety of programs available to suit everyone. “Research shows that many of the problems once attributed to aging, such as slowing down, declining muscle strength and fatigue, are actually the result of a sedentary lifestyle. Eighty percent of the health problems once associated with aging are now thought to be preventable or postponable if a person keeps fit,” says Dr. Leaf of Harvard Medical School. This program was developed for The Goodman Group by Nicole Rennie, board certified Geriatric Specialist in Physical Therapy. All FIT leaders have been trained by Nicole and are certified to lead each program. The main goal of the program is to strengthen the legs to prevent falls, but did you know about the other benefits? For stroke survivors, for example, a disease with implications such as hemiparesis, depression, cognitive decline and lack of energy, we recommend FIT to Be Strong. This program increase strength of the non-affected side to allow for increased independence. FIT to Pedal will benefit stroke survivors by reducing blood pressure and decreasing the resting heart rate.In future newsletters, we will highlight the benefits for those with other diseases or impairments. Check your calendar for dates and times of the programs. We look forward to seeing you there!

April Fools’!Comedian Shawn Purvis will be entertaining us this April Fools’ Day at 2 p.m. in the Palm View Room. Here is his bio from his website, www.shawnpurvis.com.Raised in Baltimore, Md., Shawn flew south to the warm mugginess of Tampa Bay almost a decade ago. His time in the sauna was enough to stir the performer within. From theater to standup comedy, keynote speaking to speech contests, once he begins speaking, it’s tough to get him to shut up. Thankfully, audiences still listen.A three-time District Champion within Toastmasters, he has competed at the semifinal in Las Vegas, Nev., in 2011 and Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2013. He placed third in his heat at the semifinals in Ohio. The lessons he learned at Toastmasters carried through to his passion for standup comedy. Starting with his first night of Open Mic at the Tampa Improv in 2006, he settled on the old Coconuts Comedy Club in Clearwater for a year before performing his first split feature. He’s performed comedy at Coconuts in Clearwater, St. Pete Beach, Safety Harbor, Clearwater Beach and even a clothing optional resort in Land O’ Lakes. He’s featured at Snappers in Palm Harbor and countless open mics.Shawn Purvis has presented humorous talks to software companies, mental health organizations, human resource organizations and realty and remodeling associations. He has emceed and performed for birthdays, retirements, anniversaries, weddings and even a funeral.Shawn has also participated in several charitable shows for healthcare workers, cancer clinics and local fundraisers. Bringing a blend of humor and appreciation, he creates “warm laughter and understanding that makes you feel good.”
