EL PASO, Texas - The 2010 United States Bowling Congress Women's
Championships in El Paso, Texas, kicked off its 100-day run, as the
first of nearly 6,000 teams took to the tournament lanes at the recent-
ly-transformed El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center.
As the USBC Women's Championships entered a convention-center
setting for the first time in its 91-year history, bowlers and spectators
were treated to the opening ceremonies, which helped usher the tour-
nament into a new era.
USBC crews began to transform the El Paso Convention and
Performing Arts Center into a state-of-the-art 48-lane bowling facilityon Jan. 25. Many of the bowlers on the opening squad appreciated the
efforts taken to build a one-of-a-kind setting for women bowlers.
Also new to the Women's Championships this year is the introduction
of three average-based divisions, instead of five, which will be contest-
ed using 100-percent handicap. The divisions are named Diamond,
Ruby and Sapphire.

2010 USBC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS GETS UNDERWAY IN EL PASO
WEST BABYLON, N.Y. - Brian
Ziesig of Levittown, N.Y., won theProfessional Bowlers Association
GEICO Mark Roth Plastic Ball
Championship Sunday at AMF
Babylon Lanes to become the first
amateur to win a Lumber
Liquidators PBA Tour event since
2002.
Ziesig rolled three strikes in the
10th frame in the championship
match to tie Australian two-hander
Jason Belmonte 247-247 in regula-
tion which forced a one-ball, sud-
den-death roll-off that was won by
Ziesig with a strike to Belmonte's
nine-count, leaving the 7 pin.
"Whenever I tried to over-hook the ball, it seemed
I wouldn't get the carry so those last few shots Ipaid special attention to avoiding that," Ziesig said.
"Believe it or not I really wasn't that nervous so that
helped me throw those shots the way I wanted to."
"This is my 15 minutes of fame" said the 35-year-
old Ziesig, who works for a bowling supply compa-
ny. "It's back to work tomorrow morning. To be
able to accomplish this on national TV in front of a
hometown crowd is really kind of a fantasy."
Ziesig, who earned $25,000 for the win, had been
a Touring professional in the 1998, '99 and 2000
seasons with a previous best finish of 10th. He
earned his way into the tournament field through a
tour qualifying round earlier in the week.
The 26-year-old Belmonte, who earned $13,000
for second, was hoping to win his second career
title having won The Bowling Foundation Long
Island Classic here last year to become the first
bowler to win a PBA Tour title using a two-handed
delivery.
"The best you can hope for is to throw 10 good
shots but I threw nine-what can you do?" said
Belmonte, who finished second for the third time
this season. "I left a 10 pin in the eighth frame
because I got behind the ball too much and I just
didn't get the break."
In the opening stepladder match, Wayne Garber
of Modesto, Calif., defeated two-time Tour titlist
Michael Machuga of Erie, Pa., 258-245. Machuga
earned $5,000 for fifth.
In the second match, the Tour's all-time career
win leader with 47 titles, Walter Ray Williams Jr.,
defeated Garber 280-211. In the third match Ziesig
defeated Williams 255-237 to advance to the cham-
pionship match.
William's third place finish was enough to put
him in a tie for the Player of the Year race with Bill
O'Neill going into the final event of the season this
week. Williams earned $8,000 for third and Garber
$6,000 for fourth.
The Plastic Ball Championship required all play-
ers to use identical plastic bowling balls and is the
one event on the PBA Tour that turns back the clockon ball technology creating an equalized playing
field and eliminating the reliance on today's high-
powered equipment.

"Often, the most extraordinary opportunities are hidden among the
seemingly insignificant events of life. If we do not pay attention to these
events, we can easily miss the opportunities."
-Jim Rohn
Everyone gets to play.
That should be the theme put
forth over and over again
whenever discussions of the
merits of youth bowling enter
any conversation. It is one of
bowlings greatest assets and
advantages over other sports.
Talk shows devote hours to
the subject of how to come up
with ways to guarantee that
every youngster gets to play.
There are all kinds of special
rules in youth baseball, foot-
ball, basketball, soccer and
other sports aimed at solving
the problem.
In some baseball and softball
leagues up to 15 kids are
allowed to come to bat whether
they are in the lineup or not. In
various youth sports there are
mandates that insure that
every kid gets his playing-
minute minimum. Getting to
play is the problem for the
young players, their parents,
the coaches and the sports. It
also has been proposed in some
areas that no score is kept, and
the end of winning and losing.
How silly can you get? In
sports and in life there are
winners and losers, and win or
lose, there is learning.
Many sports have invested
millions into developing inter-
est in their sport among
youngsters. That isnt meant
simply to create future stars
but also to create players and
fans.Bowling is woefully weak in
the spending department and
too many junior programs and
school organizations from pre-
school through college suffer.
Bowling can be expensive for
youngsters and their families.
Young bowlers should not be
viewed merely as a possible
source of current income, but
as the lifeblood of the sport in
pumping new life forever and
ever. And it is vital for every
organization in bowling to
fully recognize that fact of
bowling life.
Bowlings biggest plus with
youngsters is that everyone
gets to play, not in a forced
way, but in a full participatory
status. Junior bowlers can be
classed according to average.
Leagues can have two three or
more on a team, and there is
always room for one more.
And they all get to play. And
they all get to know how they
did as individuals or as team
members. Boys learn early
that girls can bowl well, too,
and they dont feel nearly as
bad as their elders of their
counterparts in other sports
when they get bowled over by
a female. Another plus for
youth bowling is that boys and
girls get to know each other
better in various competitive
as well as social situations.
Parents almost dread going
to a sporting contest when
their children are border
players, good enough to play,
but not good enough to be a
sure thing. Parents of young
league bowlers know their
youngsters will be in action,
no matter how well they
shoot, and parents know the
kids will be in a classified sit-
uation that is either competi-
tive or is aided by a handicap
procedure that makes for
some semblance of equality,
regardless of ability.
Bowling is fortunate that it
is a sport that can handle dif-
ferences in age, size or abilityin probably the fairest man-
ner of any sport. But bowling
should be shouting from the
rooftops to youngsters and
parents and adults and edu-
cators that this is the rarest of
sports, the sport everyone
gets to play in a meaningful
way.
Those kids who start bowling
at two or three years of age
with bumper bowling, can still
be bowling decades, and even a
century later, and the same
will apply everyone gets to
play.
For PBA legend Mark Roth, the
trip to West Babylon, Long Island,
N.Y., for the Mark Roth Plastic Ball
Championship provided him with
an opportunity to visit with some
old friends and recount memories
of a storied career.
One of those friends was fellow
bowling great Johnny Petraglia.
Both bowlers grew up in
Brooklyn and would even-
tually become fixtures on
PBA Tour telecasts in the
70s.
Petraglia was granted aPBA Commissioners
Exemption to compete in
this weeks Plastic Ball
Championship, named in
honor of his long-time
friend and rival, and
Petraglias son Johnny Jr.
also played in the event
after earning a spot in the
64-player field through the Tour
Qualifying Round.
This Roth-Petraglia reunion was
different than any other, however.
Thats because Roth, who will turn
59 on April 10, is continuing his
rehabilitation after suffering a
severe stroke last May that left his
left side paralyzed. Since the stroke
he has worked hard to regain phys-
ical function, improving to the point
where he was able to make the trip
to West Babylon with his wife
Denise to take in some of the action
at the tournament named in his
honor.
Just one year ago, Roth was rec-
ognized as the fifth greatest player
in the history of the PBA Tour, as
part of the organizations 50th
anniversary celebration. Petraglia,
who turned 63 earlier this month,
ranks 16th on that list. The right-
handed Roth, a four-time player of
the year, is tied with Pete Weber for
third in career PBA Tour titles with
34. The left-handed Petraglia owns
14 titles, but is one of only five
players in PBA history to win the
Triple Crown (U.S. Open, PBA
Tournament of Champions and
PBA World Championship).
Petraglia began his Tour career in
1965, five years ahead of Roth, and
for most of their hall of fame
careers, both bowlers competed
with plastic bowling balls. Both
have witnessed the evolution of
bowling technology since then, but
memories of competing against
each other in the old days of
ancient technology are cherished by
both.
I like the idea of a tournament
where you have to use plastic
balls, Roth said. I wish I could
bowl in this one.
While both bowlers competed
against each other often on Tour,
Roths favorite memory of bowling
against Petraglia was not in a Tour
event.
In the early 70s I bowled some
action matches against John at
Rainbow Lanes in Brooklyn, Roth
said. It was just like a Tour event--
there were more than 300 people
there. They had people watching
down the lanes all the way to the
masking units.
He was a good, tough, strong
bowler, Roth said of Petraglia,
but I always looked forward to the
challenge of bowling against him.
Petraglia said his most memo-
rable moment of bowling against
Roth was in 1978 when he beat
Roth in a semifinal match, 298-249,
in the Long Island Open (Petraglia
went on to beat Jeff Mattingly in the
championship match). But
Roth returned the favor the
following week, defeating
Petraglia in the champi-
onship match of the
Greater Hartford (Conn.)Open.
Those two weeks were
not only my favorite mem-
ories of bowling against
Mark, but some of my
favorite overall on Tour,
said Petraglia. In Long
Island, we had all of our
family and friends there.
Andy Varipapa was there, and all of
the fans were really into the show as
you can imagine.
The next week in Connecticut
Mark got his revenge by beating me
190-something to 180-something to
win the title. At that time he was
using a plastic ball and I was still
using rubber.
But what Petraglia remembers
most about Roth was how competi-
tive he actually was.
When Mark and I were both on
the Brunswick staff we would do a
lot of exhibitions and at some of
those we would bowl doubles
matches against local bowlers,
Petraglia said. If we were in a
match where the local bowlers were
striking or had a chance to beat us,
naturally the local fans would be
pulling for them and sometimes I
would get caught up in the excite-
ment, too.
But whenever that happened I
remember Mark would always pull
me aside and say, Cmon, we cant
let these guys beat us.
Its almost unheard of that two
players as talented and competitive
as Petraglia and Roth would con-
cede anything to each other, but this
week, without prompting, Petraglia
said he is donating half of his earn-
ings from the Plastic Ball
Championship to Roth to help his
friend with his staggering medical
and rehabilitation bills. Its nothing
new; he has been working hard to
help raise money for Roth since
learning of his stroke.
Petraglia also represented his
long-time friend by presenting thewinners check. Bowling in a tour-
nament with my son and named
after Mark Roth it doesnt get
much better than that, Petraglia
said.
