KEY ANNIVERSARY10 YEARS AGO: The supersized era of Augusta National began when theclub tried to combat technology by lengthening nine of the 18 holes, addingas much as 285 yards. Some called it Tiger-proofing, but it wasnt nearlyenough to stop Tiger Woods from becoming only the third player to repeatas Masters champion. In a tournament plagued by rain, Woods birdied hislast hole for 66 on Saturday to share the lead with Retief Goosen. An early

burst of birdies in the final round gave him the lead, and no one got closerthan two shots the rest of the way in a reckless attempt to try to catch him.Woods closed with 71 for a three-shot win over Goosen.

IF YOURE GOINGAMEN CORNER is an obviouscrowd favorite, but try findinga spot at the favorite courselocations of the Aiken Standardsports staffers.NOAH FEIT: I like going by theseventh green. Thats a goodgreen for a lot of action. Fromthere, you can also see partsof Nos. 3, 17, 2 and 15. Youllsee a good mix of players at thebeginning, middle and end oftheir rounds.JEREMY TIMMERMAN: Set upshop somewhere between the15 and 16 greens. Two scoring

holes on the second nine makefor dramatic shots. Dependingon which side youre on, the fifth

green and No. 6 are a short walkfrom this location.CAM HUFFMAN: The No.10 green has a little bit ofeverything great golf, shadeand a view of the scoreboard. From there you can see theapproach shot into the green, the putts on the green andthe tee shots at No. 15. Largetrees provide some relief fromthe shade, and a view of thescoreboard lets you knowwhats going on around the restof the course.

As a portion of the Laurens Streetbridge continues to fall, the South Car-

olina Departmentof Motor Vehiclesis working toresolve the issue.

    The southwest-ern part of the

bridge has sunk a total of 16 inchessince Monday when it was first closedafter Aiken Public Safety received acall from a concerned motorist.

The ends of the bridge are sitting onconcrete supports with dirt underneath. That ground eroded after heavy rainsSunday evening, causing a corner ofthe bridge to falter.

Public Works Director Larry Morrissaid the last the City heard about therepairs was that SCDOT was work-ing to bring a crane in to remove thebroken pavement to avoid damage tothe concrete columns supporting themiddle of the bridge.

On Wednesday, SCE&G beganinstalling a temporary line to re-routepower from a current line that runsparallel to the bridge.

AUGUSTA The atmospherewas tense and, at times, even alittle hostile inside Masters Chair-man Billy Paynes annual newsconference Wednesday morning at

Augusta National Golf Club. The traditional state of theclub address included all the usualcomments about Masters traditionand a spectacular group of players, but it became clear early on thatthe topic of the day was going tobe the clubs continued refusal toadmit a female member. The seem-ingly dying embers from that fireburned hottest in 2002 when Mar-tha Burk organized a well-publi-cized protest during Masters week, were stoked once again recentlywhen a female, Virginia Rometty,

was named the new Chief Operat-ing Officer of IBM in January. Thepast four professionals to hold thatposition were granted membershipinto the exclusive club.

Media members approachedthe topic in every possible wayWednesday asking about Rom-

etty directly, questioning Payneabout what he would say to hisgranddaughters if they askedwhy women werent around andrequesting advice on what theyshould say to their own daughters. The relentless media memberseven used Paynes own commentsabout golf failing to reach a wideenough audience to question whythe club is still unwilling to reachout and hand a green jacket to awoman.
