After breaking away from FBISD and HISD in 1977, the City of Stafford began its partnership with the district and must approve the school's annual budget. Last week the City Council and School Board of Trustees met to discuss the fiscal progress; one of six meetings they have on an annual basis. The first item on the agenda was the bus stop on Perez and Dulles Street. Both Boards agreed to work together on the issue, though each were assertive that the problem neither belonged entirely to the City or to the District. Superintendent Lance Hindt described his visit to the residents of Perez Street and verified that 18 students currently ride the bus. He also confirmed the impossibility of maneuvering a bus down the narrow street to pick up the kids. Mayor Leonard Scarcella informed both Boards that, "In thirty-six years, Stafford students have safely been picked up at this spot since the road was a two-way asphalt, and we will continue to do so." Along with the Mayor, Councilmen Wen Guerra proposed a designated pad with enhanced culverts for the kids to safely gather for pick ups and drop offs. Meeting of the Minds... Stafford’s joint budget workshop By Betsy Dolan When Danny and Barbara Clark moved to the River's Edge subdivision in Richmond six months ago they had no idea that their family tree had come full circle. Turns out, part of the subdivision used to be land owned by one of Danny Clark's ancestors, Randall Jones, who was a member of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred and an important figure in Texas history in the mid 1800's. Now the Clark's are hoping a new LCISD elementary school in Long Meadow Farms, which also sits on land once owned by Randall Jones, can be named in his honor. "This entire thing is just very coincidental," said Barbara Clark who has spent several years researching her husband's family. "We aren't from Texas but we have lived here for years and we had no idea that part of my husband's family actually settled here." According to Clark's research, Randall Jones joined the Long expedition from Louisiana to Texas and later helped build a house for Long on San Jacinto Bay. He became an advisor to Stephen F. Austin and is credited with bringing the first large herd of cattle to Richmond. Jones was also instrumental in the push to trademark and register brands and proposed legislation for the prevention of prairie fires. Jones Family hopes to have new school named after historic kin fought in the War of 1812, was captain of the Texas Militia where he commanded the battle of Jones Creek in 1824 and served in the Texas Army during the second Mexican invasion. He is buried at the State Cemetery in Austin. "When I started digging, I discovered that Randall Jones' father-in-law, William Andrews, actually owned the land that Foster High School is on today. We didn't know that when they were deciding on a name for the new high school." Barbara said. "But that made us want to pursue this link to Randall Jones and call attention to his contributions in this area." By LeaAnne Klentzman Last week we told you all about the candidate forum sponsored by the Needville Chamber of Commerce. We discussed the sheriff candidates at length and touched on the handouts distributed about one of the candidates. Since that forum, the documents distributed that night have found their way to front doors across Fort Bend County, Facebook, phone calls, and emails to our newspaper. The handout collection of documents are the 1998 Termination letter of then- Richmond police officer Troy Nehls; currently one of the four candidates for Sheriff. In the three page document, which is nicely covered by a colorful page resembling a Brady for sheriff sign, reads Someone you can Trust ? See for yourself… The first page of this document package is Nehls’ letter of termination, followed by two pages of what appears to be the substantiating factors. Based on what is in the packet, the infractions are small policy infractions like failure to contact a victim for further information, the issuance of an improper traffic citation, an improper arrest, several times he was counseled for failing to cite residents for city ordnance violations (tall grass), and more than once he was written up for getting out of his police car and going into a restaurant without notifying the dispatcher. These are just a few of the terminable offenses listed in the letter that outlines Nehls’ Sheriff’s race... Dirty politics or mudslinging? Political Advertising paid for by Barbara Carlson for US Congress Committee.

While Congressman Olson pumps gas at a local gas station and seeks Twitter advice, Carl-son is educating District 22 about the crushing rising costs of gas at the pump. “You’ve got to be kidding. Olson is on the Energy and Commerce Committee and has to get Twitter advice about the rising gas prices at the pump?” a constituent questions.

It’s no wonder that Gallup now reports that only 10% approve of the job Congress is doing—a historical low. In addition, the NY Times’ poll now reports that less than 10% trust Congress.

One would surmise that if a member of Congress served on the Energy and Commerce Committee and from the great State of Texas, one would not have to seek Twitter advice as to the rising gas prices.

Where was Olson when the deal was cut to partner with Brazil—and George Soros is one-third owner of the company in Brazil? Not a peep from Olson—who sits on the Energy and Commerce Committee. Where was Olson when the oil moratorium was unconstitutionally in-flicted on our country—grossly affecting each and every one of us? Again, Olson was silent. Why wasn’t due process protected under our Constitution?

While Olson Seeks Twitter Advice, Carlson Educates About Rising Gas Prices

What Olson is failing to educate the voters on are the many regulations, mandates and other government policies—hidden taxes—that are being imposed on us (the consumer). According to the Cato Institute, “In recent years gas taxes

have been the fastest-growing fed-eral tax imposed on middle-income Americans.” While establishment incumbents are trying to divert the focus to the federal income tax di-lemma, the enormous hidden federal and state taxes at the gas pump are “invisible” with the blame, unfairly, now shifted to the oil companies in-stead of Congress. The gas tax is an excise tax and imposed on produc-ers while hidden from consumers. Unfortunately, the growing hidden

taxes that we are paying are rapidly growing the size of government while inflicting enormous economic damage on our economy while under the radar because of its invisibility to the consum-ers—unlike what a sales tax clearly discloses on a sales receipt.

The recent sanctions against Libya and the speculation that a prolonged reduction in crude oil supplies occurring will cause our prices to es-calate even further. In essence, we’re at the mercy

of our foreign “friends.” So, while we continue to allow our Congress to force Americans to rely on the foreign world crude-oil suppliers and inventory is limited, we will suffer even further at the pump. The cost of crude oil and its taxation takes a whopping 80% of the pie, leaving only 20% to the refiners and retail-ers. Not only is the fuel tax the second high-est hidden tax, but then the oil companies are penalized twice in double taxation (1) when the company earns a profit, it has to pay taxes on that profit; and, (2) when it pays its stockhold-ers a dividend, it’s taxed for a second time.

So the next time we’re at the pump and Olson is performing a mere publicity stunt, please do a shout-out to him, our representative who is allowing Uncle Sam to take the big-gest chunk of our pie. This is why Congress-man Olson must be voted out of office—the symbolic silence and lack of leadership as our representative.

As Carlson continues, “We need to pray for the recovery of our nation. We are in serious trouble.”

Please peruse Barbara’s website at www.Carlson22.com. I promise that I will fight bit-terly hard for our great nation. We must restore our values. The only way that that is possible is to elect the true fighters who dearly love our Constitution—and who understand it.

Judge not......I wrote last week about wannabe judge and fired Assistant District Attorney Mike Elliott who didn’t sign up to run until after filing reopened and when he realized he could trade on the name of another

Fort Bend County judge, Brady Elliott. Mike was one of the few assistant district attorneys ever fired by DA John Healey who waited far longer than anybody wanted him to fire Mike. Many people had been urging Healey

to fire Mike for a couple of years, but it was only after a severe breach of trust that he did so.

After my column, I received several complaints about Mike Elliott’s actions in a recent trial. The complaint was that Elliot, representing a defen-dant in Judge Jim Shoemake’s court, was campaigning in the court, showing his campaign literature on an overhead pro-jector in the courtroom.

I could hardly believe it. A sit-ting judge letting a lawyer cam-paign for a political office during a trial! But it was pointed out to me that Judge Shoemake’s wife

Treatments for Low SodiumThe syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH)

occurs when antidiuretic hormone (ADH, also known as vaso pressin) retains water. Hyponatremia (low sodium) is a consequence of the condition, char-acterized by an inadequate amount of sodium in the body. The condition can occur when the body retains too much water, resulting in a diluted concentra-tion of sodium in the body. Symptoms include headache, nausea, weakness, restlessness, and seizures. Selec tive serotonin reuptake inhibitor medicines, such as citalopram (Celexa) and paroxetine (Paxil) may lead to hyponatre-mia. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic medication that can also lead to an inadequate amount of so dium in the body.

Persons with hyponatremia may be advised to limit fluid intake. So dium chloride, in the form of intravenous saline or salt tablets taken by mouth, may be prescribed. A loop diuretic, such as furosemide (Lasix) may be beneficial when taken along with salt tablets, as this medication increases the excre-tion of water. Vasopressin receptor antagonist medi cations work to improve water excretion, without affecting sodium excre tion. Tolvaptan (Samsca) is a vasopressin receptor antagonist that is taken by mouth, while conivaptan (Vaprisol) is administered intrave nously for persons in the hospital.

works for Mike Elliott’s wife who is the District Clerk.

So I called Judge Shoemake, and he explained that Elliott did show his campaign literature on the overhead during voir dire to ask the jury panel it anyone in there knew him or had anything against him. Voir dire is during jury selection and it is when the jury panel is questioned to see if anyone has a bias either against

the attorney or the defendant. Judge Shoemake said he

thought it was okay for Elliott to do this in case anyone on the jury panel knew something about the campaign and was biased. Judge Shoemake said he told Mike Elliott that he was “cutting it pretty close.”

According to lawyer friends of mine, it was more than cutting it pretty close. They said that all Elliot had to do was stand up and say, “ Does anyone here know me? Does anyone here know my opponent Brenda Mullinix?” He didn’t have to make such a big deal out of it and show his literature, according to them, who also expressed disap-pointment in Judge Shoemake for letting him get away with the dog and pony show.

It didn’t do him much good as I heard his client got hosed for 45 years.

Other comments I’ve heard is that Mike Elliott is copying Brady Elliott’s sign motif. This probably won’t do him much good either.

By the way, Judge Shoemake has a Democratic opponent, Teana Watson, a lovely lady lawyer with years of expe-rience. (This information included for those of you who can stand to vote on the Democratic side of the ticket during the General election.)

Are hearing aids really better than they used to be?

For decades, hearing aid technology was limited to standard analog circuitry, similar to a simple transistor radio. Now hearing systems include miniaturized micro-

processor technology. These new digital hearing aids have revolutionized the way hearing aids perform.

These hearing aids use custom programmed circuits that react automatically to the sounds around you. The circuits can be programmed to provide more amplification of soft sounds and less amplification of loud sounds. By doing this, there is less need to adjust the volume control. A number of the aids have data logging as well, so when the patient returns after wearing the aids, the audiologist can read the aids and evaluate how they have been processing sounds in different environ-ments. The audiologist can then adjust the aids based on the data logging, thus allowing the aids to be adjusted even more precisely for each patient’s needs.

Please call us if you would like an appointment and a demonstration of these exciting advancements in technology. We look forward to helping you hear even better!

When is Alternative Transportation Provided?

If your vehicle is unsafe or illegal to drive due to the accident, you are entitled to a replace-

ment vehicle immediately upon being issued a claim number. If you are the insured, check with your insurance agent to find out if you have a rental reimbursement on your policy and how much coverage per day you have. If you are a claimant, you are entitled to have alterna-tive transportation while your vehicle is in the shop. If your vehicle is legal and safe to drive, scheduling your vehicle for repairs will avoid unnecessary over-ages in rental charges. The person renting the vehicle is responsible for optional insurance purchased from the rental company. A reputable shop will be able to reserve a rental vehicle as part of their service and as a convenience to you.

What is refinishing and how does refinishing compare to replacement?

Refinishing is a

process of restoring bathtubs, showers,

countertops, sinks and vanities with a new durable coating. Bathtubs can look and feel like new glossy porcelain. Other surfaces, such as kitchen counters, tile or cultured marble can be done in one of our beautiful stone like finishes. Refinishing will always be a fraction of the total cost of tearing out and replacing. A new bathtub and tile surround can easily cost thousands of dollars when you consider the cost of removal, plumbing, and setting new tile. Refinishing can often save you up to 75% compared to the cost of replacement and can usually be completed in 24 hours instead of the weeks needed to replace.

My telephone system vendor bills me for everything. Is there any-thing I can do to control cost?

Fire your telephone equipment vendor!!!! That’s right. The next time you get invoiced for maintenance, programming, training or just to ask a question about your telephone sys-tem call ProStar Communications. We have a solution for you.

Pull out your telephone bill from the company providing you with local telephone and internet services. Are you paying $300 to $600 or more per month? At Classic Chevrolet we always get ask the question “What are the Benefits of Nitrogen in Tires”

Compressed nitrogen has long been used to inflate the tires of race cars and aircraft. Regular air is approximately 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and 1 percent water vapor. The oxygen and water vapor can degrade tires and wheels, shortening tire life. Nitrogen

inflation is now available from many commercial and passenger car dealers.

Slower Inflation Pressure Loss - A tire inflated with regular compressed air will lose about one and a half to two psi of pressure per month. Most of the pressure loss is due to oxygen molecules permeating through the tire rubber. Replacing the air with 95 to 98 percent nitrogen reduces the pressure loss to less than one-half psi per month. Since many drivers do not regularly check their air pressure, nitrogen inflation will allow their tires to maintain proper inflation levels longer. The major benefit of properly inflated tires is optimum

Oxygen can cause oxidation of tire rubber and corrosion of metal and alloy wheels. The water vapor in air can accelerate these processes, especially under pressure like the compressed air in a tire. The corrosive effects of both oxygen and water vapor are multiplied when a tire overheats due to under-inflation. Nitrogen is an inert gas and will not cause corrosion or rust. Nitrogen also will not degrade the seals in air valves, further preventing pressure loss.

Improved Tire Life - Using nitrogen to pressurize tires has benefits over regular air for tire longevity. The greatest threats to tire life are heat and uneven tread wear. Both of these result from improper tire pressure; using nitrogen will maintain a more even tire pressure over the life of a tire. Also, the rubber inner lining of a tire will degrade over time in an air environment. As the rubber lining degrades, air pressure will be lost faster, accelerating the effects of under-pressurization. Nitrogen will not cause the inner lining of a tire to degrade, extending its useful life. According to the Innovative Balancing website, inflating tires with nitrogen can extend tire life up to 25 percent.

Classic Chevrolet Nitrogen for Life - Classic Chevrolet will install Nitrogen in your tires for $39.95 for life. That means when you purchase Nitrogen for your Vehicle, all of your tires that you purchase from Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land for the life of that vehicle we will put nitrogen in them for free.

I’ve heard that video on my website will improve my search engine rankings. Is this true? How do I start?

It is true. Google especially loves video and for other search engines, it’s an element that positively impacts website exposure.

So, let’s get started. The first step for any video project is to determine your target audience and the effect you want when someone sees the video. Do you want to be called for more information or do you want the audience to feel more comfortable about your product or service? Want the viewer to visit your business? Your trade show? Invest money in your business, or order products from your web site?

The video needs to speak directly to particular interests and needs with a tailor made message. And for that, you’ll need a script. “If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage,” goes the old saying.

We can write a script for your approval that reflects what you want to say about your business, reaches your target audience and creates the effect you desire. Then, we’ll schedule a video shoot, edit the footage, and do voice-over narration with music and titles to create a custom produced project that shows off your business to potential customers and clients.

At Star Digital Studios, we handle all aspects of production from script writing to post-production editing and we do compression for website upload. Call us at 281 690-4280 for a free consultation.

Sienna Plantation hosts Friends & Family Open Homes Tour, April 13-29Sienna Plantation will

host its Spring Open Homes Tour, April 13-29, providing families with the opportunity to tour 17 model homes in one of the top-selling community in the United States, according to RCLCO, a real estate consulting firm.

Low interest rates, Sienna Plantation’s access from the Fort Bend Parkway and a large selection of homes ready for move in are the primary reasons why the community expects a high turnout for this year’s Open Homes Tour.

“My best friends moved to Sienna as did my son and his wife,” says ten-year Sienna Plantation resident Carolyn Williams. “I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather live.”

Among its countless amenities, the 7,000-acre master-planned community is home to three water parks including the south’s largest private water adventure park with 200 feet of twisting slides, the all-new Sienna Springs Resort Pool, 36 parks and playgrounds, the Camp

Sienna Sports Complex, the Sienna Plantation Golf Club, a 6,000-square-foot fitness center, eight lighted tennis courts and lakes for fishing and kayaking.

Families in the community attend schools in the renowned Fort Bend Independent School. This fall, Sienna Plantation will welcome the opening of the community’s first private school, Sienna Lutheran Academy.

A project of Johnson Development, the community offers homes from the 170s to the millions with purchase incentives available from all Sienna Plantation builders.

Among its many awards and recognition, last year Sienna Plantation was recognized by the Urban Land Institute as one of the premier master-planned communities in the country.

Visit the Sienna Home Finder Center, 5777 Sienna Parkway, for maps, information on builders, amenities, schools and more. The center is open Monday

– Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday from noon – 5:00 p.m.

For more information, go

FOOT FACTSby Dr. Eric Tepper

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

THE CONNECTIONYears of constant movement sometimes results in arthritis of the feet.

Feet can degenerate over time, and if foot issues are ignored and neglected, the development of osteoarthritis becomes highly likely. The resulting irritation and inflammation of the feet will cause pain and can adversely affect the ability of the afflicted individual to move about. When the ensu-ing issues affect the individual’s gait, the ankles, hips, and spine may be adversely affected as well. Regular monitoring by a podiatrist can help keep such problems in check. An individualized treatment plan can help stave off any further complications. This plan may include exercises to help achieve and maintain foot health. If necessary, anti-inflammatory products may be prescribed.

There are many causes of arthritis and in the foot the most common is injury. We want all our patients to be informed decision makers and fully understand any health issues you face. Our team of specialists and staff believe that informed patients are better equipped to make decisions regarding their health and well being. For treatment for a full range of foot problems, please call 281-980-3668 for an appointment. Our policy is to exhaust all conservative therapies before suggesting surgical options. We’re located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment.

HINT: Foot pain is not normal. If you are experiencing it, see your podiatrist.

Deputies arrived on the scene shortly thereafter and Regenhard tried to escape. He was subdued when one of the deputies hit him with a Taser; he was then taken into custody. “Initially, Regehard was taken to the Fort Bend County Jail, but then was transported to Oak Bend Medical Center in Richmond for a checkup to determine if he was “fit for jail,” said Haenel.

While waiting for treatment in the Emergency Room, one of Regenhard's handcuffs was removed so medical professionals could evaluate him. With one hand free, Regenhard punched the attending deputy in the face and bolted for the Emergency Room doors. He was last seen running off behind the hospital facility. A posse of Sheriff’s deputies, along with Richmond and Rosenberg police scoured the area until Regenhard was taken back in custody at 3:49 p.m., that afternoon after finding him between the hospital and the railroad tracks.

Meeting of the Minds... Stafford’s joint budget workshopWORKSHOP, from page 1

The Superintendent is recommending a 3% raise

across the board for teachers and staff at SMSD, increasing the budget by $471,124.

There are no plans to reduce or enlarge staff, nor are there any plans for lay-offs, however it may be necessary to move some positions around. According to SMSD's CFO, Carla Merka, the District should have a surplus of nearly 32K.

Mayor Scarcella stated that Texas Instruments will be completely out of their facility

by the end of December 2012, and he expects that they might try to appeal their tax evaluation. Currently the Mayor is trying to set up a luncheon with Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce to discuss the changes and effects this will bring, but felt strongly that it was just as important for SMSD to recapture students lost due to enrollments in other districts, private schools, or homeschooling to enhance potential revenue.

An ordinance of the City of Stafford, Texas, amending Chapter 102 of the Code of Ordinances of the City, the same being the comprehensive zoning ordinance, so that certain property located at 411 Dulles Avenue and described as a tract or parcel of land containing 0.1318 acre being called Lot 1 of Mendoza Unrecorded Subdivision conveyed to Juan Perez in instrument recorded in Volume 402, Page 311 of the Deed Records of Fort Bend County out of the south 1/2 of Tract 66 of Stafford Oaks Subdivision according to the map or plat thereof recorded in Volume 255, Page 484 of the Deed Records of Fort Bend County out of the William Stafford League, Abstract 89 in Fort Bend County, Texas, shall be rezoned from Single Family Residential (District SFR) to Mixed Use (District MU); providing for severability; providing a penalty in amount not to exceed two thousand dollars for violation of any provision hereof; and finding and determining that the meeting at which this ordinance is passed was open as required by law. PASSED, ADOPTED AND APPROVED

THE 21ST DAY OF MARCH, 2012.

ORDINANCE NO. 979

An application has been submitted to the Foreign-Trade Zones (FTZ) Board (the Board) by Port Freeport, grantee of FTZ 149, requesting authority to reorganize the zone under the alternative site framework (ASF) adopted by the Board (74 FR 1170-1173, 01/12/09 (correction 74 FR 3987, 01/22/09); 75 FR 71069-71070, 11/22/10). The ASF is an option for grantees for the establishment or reorganization of general-purpose zones and can permit significantly greater flexibility in the designation of new “usage-driven” FTZ sites for operators/users located within a grantee’s “service area” in the context of the Board’s standard 2,000-acre activation limit for a general-purpose zone project. The application was submitted pursuant to the Foreign-Trade Zones Act, as amended (19 U.S.C. 81a-81u), and the regulations of the Board (15 CFR part 400). It was formally filed on April 2, 2012.

FTZ 149 was approved by the Board on June 28, 1988 (Board Order 385, 53 FR 26096, 7/11/88), and expanded on August 7, 2001 (Board Order 1185, 66 FR 42994, 8/16/01), and on February 23, 2010 (Board Order 1666, 75 FR 12726, 3/17/10).

The current zone project includes the following sites: Site 1 (280 acres) – Port Freeport Primary Facility, 1001 Navigation Boulevard, Freeport; Site 2 (153.6 acres) – Freeport LNG Terminal, 1500 Lamar Street, Quintana; Site 3 (1,063.1 acres) – Port Freeport (Parcels 13, 14 & 19), State Highway 288, Freeport; Site 4 (242.2 acres) – Port Freeport (Parcels 27, 35, 39 & TEPPCO), located on Farm Market Road 1495, Freeport; Site 5 (212.9 acres) – Port Freeport (Parcel 30), located on County Road 723, Quintana; Site 6 (146 acres) – Texas Gulf Coast Regional Airport, located on County Road 220, Angleton; Site 7 (506 acres) – Pearland Northern Industrial Park, located on State Highway 35, Pearland; Site 8 (832 acres) – Pearland Southern Industrial Park, located on State Highway 35, Pearland; Site 9 (146 acres) – Pearland Bybee-Sterling Complex, located at the intersection of Hooper Road and Sam Houston Parkway, Pearland; Site 10 (8 acres) – Alvin Santa Fe Industrial Park, 200 Avenue I, Alvin; Site 11 (340 acres, sunset 2/28/2017) – International Industrial Park, located on State Highway 59 between Beasley and Kendleton; and, Site 12 (636 acres, sunset 2/28/2017) – KCS/CenterPoint Intermodal Center, located on State Highway 59 between Beasley and Kendleton.

The grantee’s proposed service area under the ASF would be the Counties of Brazoria and Fort Bend, Texas. If approved, the grantee would be able to serve sites throughout the service area based on companies’ needs for FTZ designation. The proposed service area is within and adjacent to the Freeport Customs and Border Protection port of entry.

The applicant is requesting authority to reorganize its zone project to include existing Sites 1, 3 and 10 as “magnet” sites. The ASF allows for the possible exemption of one magnet site from the “sunset” time limits that generally apply to sites under the ASF, and the applicant proposes that Site 1 be so exempted. The applicant is also requesting that Sites 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 be removed from the zone project. No new magnet or usage-driven sites are being requested at this time. Because the ASF only pertains to establishing or reorganizing a general-purpose zone, the application would have no impact on FTZ 149’s authorized subzones.

In accordance with the Board’s regulations, Camille Evans of the FTZ Staff is designated examiner to evaluate and analyze the facts and information presented in the application and case record and to report findings and recommendations to the Board.

Public comment is invited from interested parties. Submissions (original and 3 copies) shall be addressed to the Board’s Executive Secretary at the address below. The closing period for their receipt is June 3, 2012. Rebuttal comments in response to material submitted during the foregoing period may be submitted during the subsequent 15-day period to June 18, 2012.

A copy of the application will be available for public inspection at the Office of the Executive Secretary, Foreign-Trade Zones Board, Room 2111, U.S. Department of Commerce, 1401 Constitution Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20230-0002, and in the “Reading Room” section of the Board’s website, which is accessible via www.trade.gov/ftz. For further information, contact Camille Evans at [email protected] or (202) 482-2350.

100 players and volunteers. Since recreational opportunities for special needs kids are limited, the league has grown mainly through word of mouth from parents of kids who play in the league or from its many volunteers. With no cost for the athletes, it is funded through sponsorships and donations.

"It gives special needs kids the opportunity to play a sport that they normally wouldn't be able to

play," said Leah Wesolic, League of Champions Coordinator and a Special Education teacher with Fort Bend ISD. "It also gives the parents the chance to sit back and enjoy seeing their child in a baseball uniform."

The real story is the smile on Lexi's face as she stops by the backstop after scoring a run.

"Mom, I scored!" Her mom is also all

smiles. And Lexi gets hugs and high fives from her teammates in the dugout.

Family hopes to have new school named after historic kinFAMILY, continued from page 1

Calling the Jones connection "exciting and surprising", the Clarks have applied to have the new elementary school, which is not yet under construction, named after Jones. They have filled out the paperwork, submitted the necessary historical information and are encouraging people to write letters of support. LCISD will make their recommendation in the coming

months, but in the meantime the Clarks are enjoying their famous branch in the family tree.

"I just can't get over the coincidence of it", Barbara said. "We've lived in the area for over 20-years and had no idea we had such a history here."

Randall Jones married Polly Andrews, daughter of William Andrews, another of the Old 300 who owned the land down FM 723 where Foster High

School is located. Randall and Polly were buried on their labor of land on the west side of the bridge in Richmond, but their remains were removed to the State Cemetery in Austin in 1934 as a veteran of the war of 1812, Delegate of the Consultation of 1835, and veteran of the Republic of Texas ( www.cemetery.state.tx.us). AHS Orchestra invited to perform National Anthem at Astros game

With the opening of baseball season just around the corner, FBISD Austin High School Orchestra is proud to announce that they will be performing the National Anthem at Minute Maid Park for the Houston Astros’ second game of the season. The date is April 7, 2012; game time is 6:05 pm. AHSO was the first orchestra ever to play the Anthem for an Astros game, and the team is excited to have them back again for the 2012 season. It is an exciting time for the students, directors, and their families to showcase the talent of this award-winning orchestra.

In conjunction with this event, the Austin High School Boosters Association is holding a silent auction of 10 baseballs signed

by former Astros players and personnel. The signatures are of Craig Biggio, Andy Pettitte, Larry Dierker, Art Howe, Mike Jackson, Kevin Bass, Anthony Young, Bob Watson, Jimmy Wynn and Phil Garner. The auction is now and will close at midnight on April 7. For more information or to bid, please go to www.flickr.com/photos/ahsorch2012/.

In February, AHSO once again surpassed their record by receiving a total of 198 first placed medals with 17 solos and 24 ensembles certified as eligible for All-State solo and ensemble competition in June.

A highlight of this year, the orchestra was invited to visit Salzburg, Austria by special invitation.

Sheriff’s race... Dirty politics or mudslinging? You decide

SHERIFF’S, continued from page 1

to fired all in the same year?Shortly after being celebrated

as Officer of the Year for 1997, in January of 1998 Nehls was terminated from the Richmond police department. Shortly thereafter, he was hired by Fort Bend County. Begs the question, why was his termination not an issue then?

Nehls first worked for Fort Bend County under Constable Hal Wherlin. After leaving Wherlin’s office to run against him, Nehls was hired by the Sheriff’s Office. Again, his Richmond termination was not an issue. Since then Nehls has served as the elected constable in Precinct 4.

And now in 2012, he finds himself running against yet another old boss, the chief deputy. Now that the shoe is on the other foot and Nehls is vying for a position that the chief deputy wants, Nehls’ termination from Richmond is a huge issue. Enough so that the chief deputy’s minions are

posting Nehls’ letter anyplace they can find a hook. Just another one of those things that makes you wonder… if Nehls was such a horrible employee while serving at the Richmond police department, why did Fort Bend County hire him in the first place? If he is so terrible and so dishonest, why did the sheriff and his staff help him get elected to constable? If all these candidates for Sheriff are so terrible, why is it that only the Brady supporters are slinging stench to see what sticks?

This ploy of passing out saucy documents is not a new game for the Sheriff’s personnel; they also pulled this stunt back in 2008 against candidate Billy Frank Teague.

The latest tool in political mudslinging is social media--the most familiar; Facebook. Nasty is the only word that can describe some of the things that have been posted there against candidates opposing the chief deputy’s team.

An example of how low that has all gotten is that Corporal Vanessa Brady, newly promoted,

wife of Sheriff Candidate/chief deputy, has posted Nehls’ Richmond termination as her identity on Facebook. That is correct, instead of a picture of children, a sign supporting her boss/husband, or a photo of her family, she has posted the termination letter of one of her husband’s opponents and a potential boss as her Facebook identity.

Fortunately for her, on March 21, 2012 Civil Service took effect, and unlike in the past, she will be afforded Due Process when the new Sheriff takes over. Imagine how embarrassing it would be if Nehls is elected and becomes her new boss?

Other statements posted on Facebook by the chief deputy’s supporters denigrate Nehl’s military service. One person going so far as to post that Nehls’ was not overseas serving in the military, but as a Blackwater employee.

Funny, that is not the case with Nehls, however, that was the case with several Sheriff employees who took a leave of absence to work for

a governmental contractor in foreign lands then returned back to their waiting position.

Another burr under the blanket of the chief deputy and his supporters is Nehls’ continued discussion about the Sheriff’s abysmal crime solve rate. The numbers used to factor those rates were provided by the Sheriff’s Office themselves, not only to Nehls but also to the State of Texas and the FBI, to create the Uniform Crime Report for Fort Bend County.

After realizing there was a problem with either the report or the reporting, instead of thanking Nehls for bringing it to his attention or sending him a fruit basket, the chief deputy got angry and said Nehls was a liar and told attendees at forums to come by his office and he would show them the correct numbers. Then, as if by magic, The Sheriff’s crime solve rate have been posted by a Sheriff’s employee all over Facebook (without citation) indicating they went from nearly the worst in the state to nearly the best in the state. As we have said in

the past, the first liar doesn’t stand a chance. If holding true to form, the crescendo of nasty has only just begun.

Acrimony or mudslinging, you decide.

He formerly ran a Boot Hill Head Start Fatherhood First Program in Missouri and said, “the statistics speak for themselves,” referring to the number of homes without a parent - one in three, kids being at risk of dropping out of high school, suicide rates,

bullying and other disturbing outcomes. “It’s alarming,” said Porter, and “it is everywhere you go,” including Fort Bend County. He cites census data noting that more than 24 million children nationwide grow up in a home without a father.
