attention, Parr says, “Everybody’s talking about Darius Rucker, Lady Antebellum and the Zac Brown Band. “Darius really solidified his place in country music Saturday,” Parr continues. “Certainly for Southern California he did. He’s very personable and everyone embraced him. Brad Paisley came out to sing with Darius on David Allan Coe’s ‘You Never Even Called Me By My Name.’ That was about five hours before Brad was supposed to go on. “And you’d be blown away to see how many people didn’t walk, ran to see Charlie Daniels after Darius finished. This wave of people just sprinted about 200 yards to the Palomino Stage. The fire marshals were trying to control the crowd; it was that packed.” The huge crowd, and their enthusiasm, didn’t exactly disperse quickly Sunday night. “There were people still coming home as we were coming on the air this morning saying they just got out of the parking lot at 1am, gassed up, got something to eat and rolled on,” Parr says. “Two hours of sleep and going to work.” This remarkable event most likely owes some of its success to the increased listening at KKGO, which heavily promoted the festival. “We gave away 1,100 tickets over the course of three or four months,” Parr says. “And for the 50,000 who were there, they could have sold 50,000 more easily. I’ve never seen anything like it in Southern California.”

CC Changes Imminent Clear Channel market managers and programmers will reportedly receive their marching orders tomorrow, as they get details on implementing the company’s plan to improve program quality for all day parts. This plan, which includes “New Channels, Premium Choice” for local PDs and “Sophisticated Talent Analysis,” was unveiled in an April 15 press release. The April 20 Country Aircheck Weekly offered some educated guesses into what was coming. And now, on the eve of the roll-out, a few more details are emerging. Advance word is that beginning this Saturday, weekends at the vast majority of CC stations will originate from outside the market. That means hundreds of partimers will be

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life WFRE/Frederick, MD PD Jess Wright discusses her most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Fleetwood Mac, Rumors : When I was a kid my dad used to crank this up, especially “Don’t Stop” and “Go Your Own Way”. Brings back great childhood memories, and is also just an awesome bunch of music. I still crank it up every time!2. Blondie, Heart of Glass: This was the very first cassette I ever got. I think I was about 9

and I bought it with my own money. I listened to it over and over, and yeah, I knew every word to “Rapture.” Don’t hate.3. Counting Crows, August and Everything After: This came out the first year I was in radio. Not only does it bring back some great memories of first starting out in the business, but I just love the sound. And, it brings back memories of a dear friend. One who put me in a production room and made me do the same liner over the same intro on a reel to reel until I sounded natural and not like I was reading or “playing DJ.” She died a few years ago, and I think of her every time I hear a song from this album.4. Dixie Chicks, Fly: I didn’t always know that I loved country music, and this was the first country CD I owned. I love the way they sound on the radio (or did, when it was ok to play them). 5. The Manhattan Transfer, The Very Best of...: I discovered them through our vocal jazz group in high school. I’m a sucker for harmonies, I love the style of music, and I could sing along to it all day. In fact, please hold while I go sing “Ray’s Rock House.” • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: I honestly can’t think of one. When I hear about something enough, I go find it and listen to it. Whether I love it or not, I want to know what the hype is about. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Is that song, “I’m In Love With A Stripper” considered important? Because I don’t get that at ALL.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors off and on throughout my life. New Edition’s self-titled album when I was 12, Michael Jackson’s Thriller when I was 13 or 14, Janet Jackson’s Janet when I was in college, and recently, Randy Houser’s Anything Goes.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You” by Stevie Nicks.

check OuT: in sTOres 4/28 Digital Info Not Compelling To PDs (continued from page 1)“Sales and download data is interesting to look at, but it doesn’t really affect our decision making process relative to adds or conversions. We still rely primarily on our gut instinct after listening to a new single, to see if we think it’s a good fit for our local audience. We consider the ‘sonic balance’ of the currents in rotation to determine our needs at the time relative to tempo, lyrical content etc. So far, it seems to be working, we’re averaging at 12 share, which ain’t bad.” KBEQ/Kansas City MD TJ McEntire is a bit more active

in seeking online input, although she admits that she and PD Mike Kennedy aren’t using these new resources to make music decisions yet. “I go to MySpace music pages to check stuff out and am a fan of Facebook artists and always read the info they send,” she says. “We probably should look at this stuff a little closer; iTunes purchases are accelerating as we speak and the Internet is making it easier and easier to seek out

new artists. I also actively use Facebook to communicate with listeners. We should probably look into how to utilize these tools better with music decisions. These are still un-tapped resources. I know Mike and I still rely on our gut a lot.” WDSY/Pittsburgh APD/MD Stoney Richards uses tech for listening to new music and for researching music and artists. However, he’s another programmer who doesn’t rely on the online aggregator tools in making music decisions. He notes, “Download numbers always look good, but in reality what you download is not something you may want to listen to several times a day. So the transference of downloads to radio listening isn’t equal on both sides. I know the way I listen to songs on my iPod is different than the way I listen to my car radio.” Please let us know if any of today’s new sales/downloading tools are part of your music decision-making process. Email your thoughts to [email protected]. CAC

Jimmy Wayne, Bob DiPiero, Dean Dillon and Scotty Emerick will headline the CMA Songwriters Series at New York City’s Joe’s Pub May 21. Tickets are $25 here. Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood co-wrote with Luke Bryan on his current single “Do I.” Hillary Scott sings backup vocals. Jason Aldean, Eli Young Band, Melinda Doolittle and others are scheduled for the GRAMMY Block Party May 12 at Nashville’s Owen Bradley Park.
