THURSDAY 26th APRIL 2018
Dear Families,
The ANZAC Day
ceremonies are a special
time in the school year and it is very
pleasing to see how our children grow in
respect and knowledge, each year, of the
significance of ANZAC Day. Yesterday at
the Mentone RSL ceremony we were
represented by- Ella, Sadiemay, Sasha,
Evie, Lily, Siahn, Ollie, Summer, Teagan & Evie as well as 10- 15 children at
other year levels along with their parents. In addition to our participation in
this community event our Student Representative Council (SRC)
representatives from each class led
the school in an ANZAC Assembly
last Tuesday. Congratulations to the
SRC reps on the excellent job they
did. Special thanks also to the
parents and families who joined us
at the assembly.
Working Bee 21st April
Last Saturday we had a very
successful working Bee with the following tasks completed- drains and
gutters cleared, garden beds weeded and cleared, garden beds repaired, new
edging laid, new ground surfacing laid in the vegie garden area, water tanks
shifted and benches relocated. Thank-you to the following families who
participated- Williams, Donovan, Tran, Mavroudis, Calman, Crowley,
Leighton, Nugent, Ingle and Johnson in addition we had the invaluable
assistance of Danny Benoiten (our school handyman)
St.John Vianney’s Fete Meeting 1st May 7.30pm School Staffroom
Now is the time to begin our preparations for the 2018 School Fete. This is
our major fundraiser for the year but just as important to our school
community is that the fete is about people coming together, working on a
common goal and sharing in the satisfaction of a job well done. Through the
efforts of last year’s fete the PFA recently funded the following expenditures
across the school:
• An LED sign for the school, approximate cost $11,000-12,000
• $3000 set aside for Grounds & Garden art and design as part of our
STEAM Program
• $3000 for LEGO technics and drones for use with a technology
interest group

• $1000 for a pizza oven, cupboard and cabinet
• $350 for a 6 burner BBQ and cover
• $5000 for general plantings and grounds development
All these expenditures will add to the life of our school and the programs that we can deliver to your
children but there are some things more valuable than the funds that come from the fete and they are-
1. The community building that grows from us working together on a common focus.
2. The example that we give to our children of how a community can achieve anything that it sets its
mind to.
The two outcomes above are lifelong values that we can share with our children. We know that we have a
good community at St. John Vianney’s. Our challenge is to show our children how they can help to build a
strong community when they become the next generation of school parents.
You don’t need any special skills, everyone is welcome especially any of our parents new to St. John
Vianney’s in the past 12 months.
STOMP Dance
Last Tuesday we began our STOMP Dance program, I had the pleasure of watching the Year 5/6 lesson
which was certainly high on energy and enthusiasm.
Inter School Cross Country
Next Monday our squad of 40 runners will participate in the District Cross Country, they have been
practising 3 times a week for the past month and we wish them all the best for the big day.
Regards,
Shane Regan

Introducing Livia……. Livia is one of our prep students in 2018. Livia is the first child in her family to come to SJV.
Livia is 5, her birthday is in August and she is having a LOL party. Livia
got a LOL doll y esterday at the shops.
Livia loves colouring in at school and cutting out and gluing. The
hardest thing about school has been the running races. Mrs
O’Shannessy and Mrs Moor are the best teachers ever. Livia loves
Indonesian because she is learning a new language. STOMP dancing
was good fun and Livia is a very good dancer. The Teddy Bears Picnic
was a very fun day because they got to eat lunch at the park and have a
Zooper Dooper. Livia’s dad came to the picnic too. Livia thinks Yoga is
one of the funniest things she has had to do at school because she had
to stick her bottom out! The best dinner mum cooks at home is
popcorn chicken, the worst thing she cooks is Brussel sprouts! When
Livia is at home she likes playing with her LOL dolls because they can do
water surprises. Livia has a baby brother called Georgie who comes
into her room in the morning and jumps on her tummy. She still loves
him even though he scratches her sometimes. Livia’s buddy is Evie, she
helps Livia in the classroom sometimes, Livia thinks Evie is fancy !

Spotlight on Learning Prep
During Term 1, Preps learnt about fairness. We talked and
drew about things that are fair and things that are not fair.
We learnt about our class rules and our school rules.
We learnt what bullying is and what to do if someone tries
to bully you. We acted it out.
5
We tried to be fair and caring to the poor people. We gave lots of money to Project Compassion.
We are trying to treat others the way God wants us to.
It is good to share.
It is good to take turns.
It is good to let others join in my games.
We feel happy when everyone is being fair.
1/2 LH
Last term our class learnt about fairness and justice during inquiry.
To us fairness and justice means; being fair, inclusion, kindness, following rules, showing respect, being equal
and showing good school spirit.
We made a recipe for friendship soup. Our recipes were
filled with gallons of kindness, 2 cups of trust, 4 cups of
respect, 2 cups of fairness and 3 spoons of laughter. We had
lots of fun making these recipes.
We also learnt about school spirit. We made posters to show
how we have good school spirit at SJV. We show school spirit
by cheering each other on, being respectful, listening and
cooperating.
When we were learning about fairness and justice, we spoke about relationships. We talked about our
relationships at home, at school and with our friends. We talked about using manners, being helpful,
sharing, being honest and respecting our teachers.
Our class rules are there to help us remember how to show fairness at school so that everyone can learn.
We also read a book called Digger and Lew. This book taught us that it is ok to lose, but not ok to cheat. We
need to be good winners and good losers to show fairness to one another.
During term 1 it was Lent. We showed good social justice by giving to Project Compassion. We became more
giving and respectful of one another as human beings.
Thank you for listening to what we learnt about Fairness and Justice in Term 1.
1/2MH
In term 1 our topic was fairness. We looked at our class rules and we talked about why games need to be
fair.
We created a school spirit burger, which had a team of community, cooperation, positivity, thoughtfulness
and love.
We spoke about Jesus and how Jesus showed fairness by healing the leper when no one else would go near
him.
We learned about bullying from the story Jungle Bullies and looked at different strategies you can use when
faced with an uncomfortable situation.
We think fairness is important because it helps us to get along and keeps things from getting out of hand.

3/4 TD
In 3/4 TD we designed the rules and laws for our different towns and cities. We set up the justice organisation and rules in our cities so that people can be safe. We built and designed the town with lego and different materials. We designed the rules. Sophie and Naomi have written a rap about our safe towns. Justice Rap By Sophie and Naomi
Justice, fairness, rules and laws And sometimes on the road we pause In our town everything is safe
In our town we follow Jesus and be safe It’s the coolest town ever
In our town no-one gets the crown
It’s the coolest town no-one frowns In our town there is much to do Vets , houses, shops and more We all love our town
In our town we follow Jesus and be safe It’s the coolest town ever
Fairness, kindness in our town
Everything is fair because it’s a rule
We look after one another in our town
In our town we follow Jesus and be safe It’s the coolest town ever
We take care of our town Jesus said: Don’t frown We love our neighbours That’s what we want to do
Grade 5 GF
Today we will be talking about what we have been learning over the past term.
We have been learning about justice, power and parliament.
Recently we went to the Parliament house of Victoria and walked inside the Green room called Legislative
Assembly/lower house.
We roleplayed a debate and argued about banning plastic bags. We represented members of parliament
including the premier and opposition leader. The purpose of the debate was to show us how laws are made.
They begin as a bill and the issue is argued in the legislative assembly.
After that we went into a red room called Legislative council. Once a bill passes through Legislative Assembly
it is given to the Legislative Council/Upper House where it must be passed to become a law. Once passed
through Legislative Council it is approved by the Governor, the state representative of the Queen.
We also did Inquiry groups which we had been put into groups to make a political party, designing a logo
and making a slogan.
7
The groups were: Prograss, Ani.Co, Jesem, Greensleeves and
Chains
Soon we will be voting for the best political party to be the
winning party. We will vote like adults do in an election. We hope
you learnt something new today. Thank you
Grade 5-6 SH
In term 1our topic has been about justice. Justice means to always
show fairness and consider everyone's opinions. In our country
everyone gets a say because we are a democratic country.
We have members of parliament who represent us.
Grade 5/6 visited the Victorian Parliament earlier this week. In the Victorian Parliament our class did a role
play of how a law is introduced, debated and passed these are some pictures of us in the Legislative
Assembly which is the green room. We debated about whether plastic bags should be banned, if you believe
plastic bags should be banned say “I” now.
If you think they shouldn't be banned say, “ No”.
I think the “I’s” have it.
In class, we have looked at the National floral emblem, National Anthem, Australian flag and coat of arms
and we have learned about what they symbolise. We have also learnt all the levels of government, federal
which looks after foreign affairs, imports ,exports and taxes. State government which looks after police,
roads and public transport and local which looks after your parks, rubbish and pets.
Tim Richardson is the state member for Mordialloc which means he looks after our school and all of our
community. Some interesting facts about Tim are that he is passionate about education, he looks after
60,000 people in his electorate and he is a backbencher in the Legislative Assembly of assembly.
The Saints Visit Year 3/4
Maverick Weller, Ray Conellan and Daniel McKenzie visited our school on Tuesday. They talked to us in the classroom about the number of games they have played, how many goals they have kicked and about St Kilda. They took us outside and played games with us and then signed our footballs and pencil cases and gave us some scarves and hats. By Jacinta and Lochie
